Im a manc but as much as I hate to say it shankly and paisly legends in football!.. Still think paisly got lucky as shankly was the one that layed the foundation of success at anfield.? What happened to liverpools tradition of appointing managers within? After fagan, it went down hill?? Anyway that enough credit to the scousers!... Fuck me il be giving to charity next!!.. 19! :)
Im a United fan but I know that Shankly and Paisley where two of the best managers of all time. Best four managers ever are Fergie then Sir Matt and then Paisley and Shankly tied for 3rd
I'm a Juventus fan, but I have to Admit Bob Paisley is an ABSOLUTE LEGEND of Football. he also mixed it well with some nice Charisma and unforgettable quotes like:
"If you're in the penalty area and don't know what to do with the ball, put it in the net and we'll discuss the options later." BOB PAISLEY YNWA.
If there was any justice in this world, ferguson should be stripped off his knighthood for his constant bullying and cheating,he's a disgrace to football. There is no way he's a great manager in the mould of Bob Paisley,Brain Clough,Bill Shankley who let their teams do the talking on the pitch and didn't have the FA to help them along.Unless fergsuon got the knighthood for moaning, blaming and bullying,a common thug,he's a poison in the game,a curse.
Great man. Thanks for this post. In my opinion Bob Paisley and Bill Shankly are two of the most remarkable men ever. True knights of this country. I'm so proud to have witnessed their works. They are and always will be
Tragic that a man with so sharp a brain succumbed to Alzheimer's. His record of trophies per season as manager will never be surpassed in my lifetime. Statistics don't lie in this case: an average of over two trophies per season. A genuinely humble man, described by Kevin Keegan as the only man he knew without an ego. And to think he didn't even want the manager's job. RIP Bob, you were one of a kind, and a fellow Sunderland supporter (at heart).
@flanneryged Their fourth win in 1984 was under Joe Fagan (the year after the great Bob retired). I remember watching the final replay (against Everton) as an invited guest in a private key club in East Boldon with a (sadly late) friend. Bob was IMHO the best of the best. Shankly was, of course, briliiant, but without Paisley's wise counsel and steadying hand, I don't think Liverpool would have been the force they were under Shankly.
@SouthCoastMackem You are of course quite right about the 1984 Euro Cup win it was Joe Fagin, I have just had a Liver Transplant and prior to the operation my memory was poluted by my malfuntioning Liver contaminating my Blood with the polutants it would have cleared if it was not in failure.I will never forget those
great Liverpool Teams of the late 1970s to late 1980s.I had the pleasure of watching all of them play. The Keegan Toshack era to the Souness Dalglish days. All the best to you mate
@flanneryged Thanks for the reply. Here's wishing you a speedy recovery. I must be slightly older than you as I recall the first great Liverpool side of the 60s: Yeats, Hunt, St John. Peter Thompson, Ian Callaghan et al. Bob Paisley was, of course, intimately involved in that side as well. All the best, mate.
@flanneryged Thanks for the reply Ged. I appreciate good football, so it's natural I admired the great Liverpool teams of the past. Pity about the shambles now, but at least we get to beat you occasionally (beach ball, anyone?). In the old days, we used to lose regularly, although we did win twice away in 1981 (when I think Liverpool were saving themselves for the European Cup Final) and in 1983, when you went onto win the League. Funny really - we didn't win at home for 45 years against you!
Bob, at a time when LFC are having to put up with the ridiculous Rafa Benitez as manager you are missed more than ever. Bob Paisley the greatest manager LFC ever had.
why say that idiot, your not a fan of man u,your probly another armchair supporter, who enjoys mocking, get a life prick,im a true man u fan,who believes in football and respects the greats of football.R.I.P BOB PAISLEY....
When people say he was hugely successful because inherited shanks team, well thats a load of rubbish paisley built a better side than bill shankly's people need to realise he built his own team. He brought in the likes of rush souness hansen lawrenson mcdermott alan kennedy ect non of these where shanklys players, if people believe he just inherited shankly team, why didn't bill shankly win a european cup? because in my opinion bob took us too a higher level he got us dominating europe
i don't mind fergie being knighted.i may not support man utd but i have to admit, ferguson is good at what he does. but i do feel that paisley deserved a knighthood
@joesakic91 But what about Brian Clough? Took a struggling Second Division side to the League title (and should have made the European Cup final, but for a corrupt referee), and took another Second Division side to the League title and two successive European Cups. To me he deserves to be up there with the others, considering the raw materials he inherited. Credit where credit's due, I think?
@joesakic91 NO WAY, The BEST 5 managers ever were Shanks, Paisley, Revie, Clough and Jock Stein, Busby, was good, but not in the class of the best, fergie, sorry, he's not even close to them. If you had a top for, moaning, groaning whining blaming refs, blaming other managers, blaming opposing fans, blaming everyone else, and bitching, then fergie is your man
@ashishmufc Busby and Ferguson were knighted after winning the European Cup (or the misnamed 'Champions' League'), but either way, they both won the top European trophy, something Shankly never quite managed to do. Bob won it three times, something no other British manager achieved, but didn't get a knighthood. I'll never know why - or perhaps I do. Harold Wilson (who knighted Busby) and Blair (who did the same for Ferguson) liked to play the populist card. Bob Paisley deserved a knighthood.
Sick little evil scrot, how about if i dig you in the mouth with my fist, i shit harder than you, you'll get your faceless cowardly prick, what a sick super sad loser you are, grow some balls & grab a life, or at least do the civilised human race a favor and jump off a cliff, go on do it, you know it makes sense

Christ i loved bob like i loved my own dad.what a gentleman, what a manager, what man, your picture bob will forever hang above my bed. god bless sir bob
Bob you will always be Sir Bob in my eyes and every Liverpool fans eyes. One of the greatest if not the greatest of them all, always very humble, and always shying away from the limelight, thats bob for you the greatest of them all yet wanted no praise for his achievements! what a gentleman, Bob we will always fly the flag for you and you will never be forgotten. Hope you and bill are watching over the mighty red men, and im sure you will be there in spirit in rome in may, God bless bob and bill
i think why bob paisley is better than whiskey head ferguson is because he won all them european cups and league titles in such a short space of time, 3 european cups 6 titles in 9 season thats amazing in my book plus bob's liverpool dominated europe, a thing man utd have never done.
I'm a liverpool fan, but even I have to admit Fergie has been a better manager. His achievements are outstanding - 10 league titles and 2 European cups (and counting), turning Man United into the worlds biggest club and playing the most attractive football in the world.
but manure have bought all of there trophys just like chelsea and even blackburn did .given a bigger wallet rafa will win the prem so he can buy the players he really wants at the club
Bob was manager for 9 years, Fergie had umpteen cracks at Europe, he is in his 22nd year and only been to 2 finals in an age where you can lose 4 games and still win it. Bob won 3 European cups and a Uefa cup as well as six league titles and in those days there was hardly and gap between top flight clubs. Fergie has spent hundreds of millions, Bob got Souness, Hansen, Nicol, Whelan, Rush, Lawro, two Kennedys etc on the cheap.
Not only that, Bob dominated home and abroad which Fergie has never done, to dominate you have to win in Europe and at home consistently, Fergie hasnt come close, people talk of Utd like they are all conquering yet they have only just past Notts Forest on Euro cup wins. Know your facts mate, what kind of red are you ?
Eh? Fergie hasn't come close in Europe? Paisly has only one more European Cup to his name than Ferguson does (3-2), and Ferguson could quite easily equal him before he retires.
Remember Vicente Del Bosque won two c/Leagues in 3 seasons and was given the boot when Real were eliminated early on while champions they still won la liga that season. Fergie would have been show the door after a couple of failed attempts never mind 13, which is how long it took him to finally win it. Like Juve and Barca Utd and Fergie have flattered to decieve when it comes to dominating home and abroad.
Fergie has had nearly a quarter of a century and almost unlimited funds to pass Bobs total. Liverpool, Ajax, Bayern, Milan and Real are the only clubs to have won the European cup and defended it while continuing to win their own domestic title, Fergie hasnt come anywhere near doing that despite having massive squads and almost unlimited funds. In Europe they measure greatness by Euro achievment, its why Liverpool have mythical status there.
You say your a Liverpool fan, you hardly sound like one. You sound like your ready to defect to castle greyskull. Well good riddance. They have mythical status because of past dominance. Why do you think Real Madrid were held in held in such great esteem despite not winning it for 25 or 26 years? Liverpool may have won it once in 24 years but they are along with Milan the most succesful in the tournament over the last 30.
Aa for fergie, he followed a sacked manager in Ron Atkinson, hardly a hard act. Bob had to follow Shankly a living legend and he out achieved him. Not only that Bob was class as a man, Fergie has shown time and again his foul mouthed ignorant side a nasty biased fucker, slagging off Madrid for tapping up Ronaldo when he did it himself to Stam, Hargreaves, Saha and countless others. Bobs a bootroom god.
well said mate, bob was and always will be the greatest, there is no comparison at all with him and ferguson, sir bob will live forever, 8 seasons and something like 13 trophies with no where near as mich money or time as fuckwitson
oh fuck off u man u fans talking about sir alex and howgd he he is bob paisly is a true legend ur manager is fucking bull shit so shut up we ve won it 5 times u fuckers YNWA luv da liverpool fans
And if you compare the state of football back then to now (condition and facility wise) it was very poor to the superstar and luxury treatment teams get today, back in thw 1970s, the pitches were terrible, grounds were in bad condition and most of all, players werent safe in the knowledge that they would be paid full out, so the people who compare or even mention Alex ferguson in the same breath as Sir Bob, you must be having a LAUGH!
well said jonny07, bob was a true manager, ferguson is not in the same league (literally) as sir bob. yet ferguson ends up being made a sir and bob who done it the hard way, with no where near as much money etc ends up not being named a sir, what a joke. ferguson has not won 3 euro trophies, never won any back to back and never won the uefa cup either.sir bob we salute u!
Sure, Sir Alex Ferguson may have more trophies than Bob Paisley, but you can't compare those two because they have two different eras.
Paisley had to win European Cups/UEFA Champions League Titles with players within the UK and Ireland. Ferguson had to go outside of the U.K. and Ireland to find a lot of talent to win his two European Cup Titles.
The formats in each European club tournament are different, etc.
Spot on dazot, to win the European Cup back then was easily much harder than it is today, back in the 60s, 70s and 80s the European Cup was knockout games all the way through, based over 2 legs, if you lost a game then it most certainly meant elimination, nowadays you can make the final after losing 3-4 Group games, paisley won it 3 times, with no money and the hard way.
add to that , that squads were nowhere near as big, so most players had to play every game of every competition, he did not have today's luxury of resting key players 4 important games (once again unlike today) imagine him managing today it would be a doddle 4 him, loads more money, loads of chances to qualify 4 Europe, less league games, he would clean up!
the more u think about it the harder it is to believe what sir bob acheived? i mean when he won his 3 euro cups firstly you had to have won the league (not come 2nd or 3rd or anywhere else, unlike today) 2nd u had to play more league games, 42 not 38 per season, and 3rd u could only use 1 sub back then per game in the league, 4th the euro cup was home and away legs, lose a leg and u were out, unlike today, where u can lose a few games yet still make the final.
why was he not knighted? who else has done what he has in such a short period? i know fergusons won more trophies overall but look how long he,s been in management and look at the amount of money he has had at his disposal being at the worlds richest club! sir bob we salute you.
the greatest manager ever period. sir bob achieved in 8,9 seasons what most clubs have not achieved in their entire history. in an era where he had no where near as much money to splash around unlike today! he had only shrewdness and brains to buy nobodys and turn them into gods, not like today where managers splash out millions on already made stars.sir bob was the ultimate epitome of a footballing genius and all this coming from me, a pompey supporter, bob was god!

J0nny07 3 years ago 2
well said jonny07, bob was a true manager, ferguson is not in the same league (literally) as sir bob. yet ferguson ends up being made a sir and bob who done it the hard way, with no where near as much money etc ends up not being named a sir, what a joke. ferguson has not won 3 euro trophies, never won any back to back and never won the uefa cup either.sir bob we salute u!

J0nny07 3 years ago
add to that , that squads were nowhere near as big, so most players had to play every game of every competition, he did not have today's luxury of resting key players 4 important games (once again unlike today) imagine him managing today it would be a doddle 4 him, loads more money, loads of chances to qualify 4 Europe, less league games, he would clean up!
daztot 3 years ago
the more u think about it the harder it is to believe what sir bob acheived? i mean when he won his 3 euro cups firstly you had to have won the league (not come 2nd or 3rd or anywhere else, unlike today) 2nd u had to play more league games, 42 not 38 per season, and 3rd u could only use 1 sub back then per game in the league, 4th the euro cup was home and away legs, lose a leg and u were out, unlike today, where u can lose a few games yet still make the final.

daztot 3 years ago
why was he not knighted? who else has done what he has in such a short period? i know fergusons won more trophies overall but look how long he,s been in management and look at the amount of money he has had at his disposal being at the worlds richest club! sir bob we salute you.

we remember you sir bob. rip 14/02/96 the ultimate manager

the greatest manager ever period. sir bob achieved in 8,9 seasons what most clubs have not achieved in their entire history. in an era where he had no where near as much money to splash around unlike today! he had only shrewdness and brains to buy nobodys and turn them into gods, not like today where managers splash out millions on already made stars.sir bob was the ultimate epitome of a footballing genius and all this coming from me, a pompey supporter, bob was god!
