Tragic that a man with so sharp a brain succumbed to Alzheimer's. His record of trophies per season as manager will never be surpassed in my lifetime. Statistics don't lie in this case: an average of over two trophies per season. A genuinely humble man, described by Kevin Keegan as the only man he knew without an ego. And to think he didn't even want the manager's job. RIP Bob, you were one of a kind, and a fellow Sunderland supporter (at heart).

I remember watching the final replay (against Everton) as an invited guest in a private key club in East Boldon with a (sadly late) friend. Bob was IMHO the best of the best. Shankly was, of course, briliiant, but without Paisley's wise counsel and steadying hand, I don't think Liverpool would have been the force they were under Shankly.

@ashishmufc Busby and Ferguson were knighted after winning the European Cup (or the misnamed 'Champions' League'), but either way, they both won the top European trophy, something Shankly never quite managed to do. Bob won it three times, something no other British manager achieved, but didn't get a knighthood. I'll never know why - or perhaps I do. Harold Wilson (who knighted Busby) and Blair (who did the same for Ferguson) liked to play the populist card. Bob Paisley deserved a knighthood.

Paisley had to win European Cups/UEFA Champions League Titles with players within the UK and Ireland. Ferguson had to go outside of the U.K. and Ireland to find a lot of talent to win his two European Cup Titles.

Spot on dazot, to win the European Cup back then was easily much harder than it is today, back in the 60s, 70s and 80s the European Cup was knockout games all the way through, based over 2 legs, if you lost a game then it most certainly meant elimination, nowadays you can make the final after losing 3-4 Group games, paisley won it 3 times, with no money and the hard way.

the greatest manager ever period. sir bob achieved in 8,9 seasons what most clubs have not achieved in their entire history. in an era where he had no where near as much money to splash around unlike today! he had only shrewdness and brains to buy nobodys and turn them into gods, not like today where managers splash out millions on already made stars.sir bob was the ultimate epitome of a footballing genius and all this coming from me, a pompey supporter, bob was god!
