  • ...unless boethiusnd below can tell me where it came from? did you read it anywhere?

  • Hmm, sorry to tell you folks, but I've been through two different translations of the consolation of philosophy and this section isn't in either. Tony Wilson seems a bit of a con artist and he's done it again :) Boethius mentions a wheel going around and refers to it as a 'wheel of fortune' which is why Tony Wilson mentions it when hosting the eponymous TV show. The real reference is to his TV career it seems and the quote was embellished, well actually just totally made up for the film!

  • I think about this scene a lot lately.

  • @RedJoe10 same pal

  • The street bum was Christopher Eccleston, the first Doctor Who of the modern series.

  • Modeselektor is awesome

  • that bum seemed more content than the one with money

  • Wow, I love you YouTube, and you anonymous uploader. I haven't seen this movie for years, and I just randomly remember this scene. And I search. And here it is.

  • @AppropriationIsMe Youtube, an invention of the Gods. 24 Hour Party People, a great movie. The natural successor to Trainspotting and very underrated.

  • Is this street outside where the Warehouse Project is now?

  • You'll probably want to hear "Rapanthem" by Modeselektor (contains this sample from the movie).

  • The quote:

It's my belief that history is a wheel. "Inconsistency is my very essence" -says the wheel- "Rise up on my spokes if you like, but don't complain when you are cast back down into the depths. Good times pass away, but then so do the bad. Mutability is our tragedy, but it is also our hope. The worst of times, like the best, are always passing away".

  • @lovkraft Inconstancy, not inconsistency. Nicely done, apart from that tiny error.

  • It hasn't happened yet, but I just watched 24 Hour Party People for the first time today, and this scene is going to make me read Boethius's "Consolation of Philosophy" in the very near future. I like how Coogan/Wilson responds with "I know...I know" as if he's confused but completely understands, which I guess is the point of the quote in the first place.

  • @scatterbraintrains he says "I know, I know" because the quote reflects Tony Wilson's success and subsequent failures - this scene is why I read boethius - and the origin of the screen name I use in everything. It completely kicks ass.

  • one of my fav films, very good movie

  • Is this how he auditioned for Doctor Who?

  • The best scene.
