  • that looks like a historic building for sure. nothing saved from it I bet.

  • Continued comment:

The building was inspected by English Heritage before it was sold and it was in good condition, in fact £50,000 had been spent on repairs in 2005,

Another emergency repair order was issued and the owner called in AB Demolition to repair the roof - if the contractoors were there to demolish the building they should inform the courts of this as the work ws unauthorised and those responsble are now being proseciuted.

  • Please note that in January 2008 the owner had told the local press that he had bought this theatre with the intention of demolishing it - this made front page news in the Derby Evening Telegraph.

The owner never did apply for permission to demolish the building which was in use less than a year before it was sold to the him despite offers from local groups over several yearsas a Bingo Hall.

  • English Heritage "Hang your heads in shame" this was avoidable, but then it would have taken a thousand years numerous consultation periods and thousands and thousands of pounds before the nonsensicle powers that be would have decided to consult the developer.

Developer I despise you I hope you new development see's an end to you

  • hi sweepy136 i commend you for backing your husband and rightly so i think alot of people got caught up in the publicity but dont you think that mr anthony as a property developer would and should have known the condition of the property prior to purchasing it and security of the building should have been paramount after purchase.if i offended you and your husband i apologise but if you are a derby couple you will understand that we have lost a lot of historic buildings over the years in derby

  • just to carry on from that i was just saying i wouldnt be supprised if a block of new appartments takes the place of the hippadrome :(

  • its such a shame its was such a lovely building, fair enough it seemed to be doomed from the 60's but still all it needed was someone with a good idea, maybe derby college should of bought it for students studying film or theatre. im not upto date on whats happening with this building but i know its grade II and there was a fire, and i presume its so unsafe and unrepairable now that its being demolished, such a shame! does anyone know what the guy who owns it was going to do with it?

  • Heres my understanding of the situation. The hippodrome was fine when it closed a year ago (fair condition but still safe). Some developer bought the site and applied for planning permission and got turned down. then over the course of the year the place gets into such a state its no longer safe and has to be "made safe" resulting in the loss of the building. sorry but you have to admit that sounds very suspicious!

  • in regard of giving a portion of our salaries. i would be happy to if Mr Christopher Anthony wasn't the owner and it was owned by the public. when he took over the building it was safe and in reasonable condition. 2 months ago 28dayslater showed the state of the inside, how the upper circle balcony had been removed and builders tape left in its place. sorry i didn't think vandals used this. its clearly demolition by stealth. thats why the council got a high court order to stop him.

  • i hope the council throw the book at him for this. Send him to jail and make him rebuild it.

  • That is quite obviousely demolition work! How can Mr Anthony claim he was attempting to "renovate" the Hippo when this video clearly shows demolition machinery at work.

I see another "Crest Hotel" situation developing.

I sincerely hope Mr A is made liable for ALL costs for re-building the this piece of Derby history.

  • saw this piece of equipment arrive friday morning 28/03/08 i couldn`t understand why such large vehicle was needed i can see why now and the city council should be deeply ashamed of them selves for letting this happen . it was so obvious that this is what was going to happen .personally i think the vehicle driver should be held responsible and prosecuted .

  • nodnops.for all we know their jobs could of been on the line if they didnt do as much damage as possible.Any person trained in demolition would easily know that the machinery/technique they were using was incorrect.I do hope that AB Demolition/Bijou Developments has INSURANCE because they're gonna need the fcuker when those jokers getted ripped to shreds in court on Thursday.

Videos like these shown in court will ensure victory to the people.

  • if those walls were as unstable as claimed it would not have taken hit after hit by that massive machine to knock them down

  • remind me never to get these buch of cowboys in when i need some work doing on my house!!

Derby City council and English Heritage must use clips like these to prosecute the owner and contractors for their disgraceful actions.

  • what i dont understand is why they still carried on after the walls collapsed they should of stopped straight away this is a terrible thing to have to see happen . what is happening to derby theres nothing left at all now where have all the nice buildings gone .? watch this space here comes another westfield xx

  • This vidoe shows how important these buildings are to the city of Derby and a complete lack of care by the people who were supposedly carrying out "Repair work"!

I visited this building quite a few times in my life and it always struck me as such a nice theatre and I am really disgusted how things have turned out for this place and how it has been allowed to just become a doss area for druggies etc Shame on you Derby City Council for allowing this once marvellous buliding to end up like this!!

  • Its a theatre, there's nothing to support the walls other then the roof which had collapsed following the arson. The wall is fairly insignificant compared to the interior which unfortunately was lost weeks ago.

  • B*****ds aint they??? This building should be ressurected. What I don't understand is yes remove the roof but there is no need to remove the walls like they have.
