  • Actually, a PA view provides better detail of the heart. However, an AP view would provide a large appear heart due to the magnification because of the increased OID (object to image distance.) Therefore, the heart is easier to see in an AP image but with slightly less detail.

  • text is unreadable! totally useless.

  • The guy confused PA with AP view too many times.

  • you sound like owen wilson

  • show that L marker be on the side where the heart is??????

  • @TheDeftGamer Unless the patient suffers from dextracardia or situs invertus.

  • very brief and helpful. thank you!

  • nice quick review...thanks :)

  • i understand that dark means air, white means heavy thick stuff but what about the normal lung tissue, i mean is there any ground we can compare it with ? so we can say this is black or white ?

  • You have to understand that the gray scale of an x-ray can be controlled with a computer/ if it is a CR/DR image So the technique the RT sets is pivotal. On a normal chest, you can see pulmonary markings extending from the carina like tree branches. The lung tissue is only slightly lighter than pneumothorax.. other things to look for, plural effusion, Enlarged heart/ aorta..

  • in COPD, specifically emphysema isnt the heart supposed to appear small and narrow?

  • u r rite in emphysema the heart look like a tear drop.but when the disease progress it will cause pulmonary hypertension which in turn cause right ventricular enlargement so heart look big

  • thanx. that was good for brief quick study :)

  • it would have been great if you showed it with arrows. Otherwise i m doing some guessing with the second x ray. Besides that...great lecturing. Thank you! I feel i ve learned a lot

  • don't forget trachia, bone, soft tissues and hilum..

  • and the carina.. AP/PA, Hilum is visible on a lateral image.

  • Indeed, and why is this person saying that you can't see the heart very well with a PA view? There is no front and back within x-ray. The x-ray goes through both sides, so you also see it flatten out on picture. So there is no front or back on a picture. When we would make a AP view, the heart would be bigger because it's futher away from the film. Which gives it an unreal projection. That's why if possible we make PA views.

  • there is a front and back, a trained eye doesn't need to be told whether something is a PA/AP, because the anatomy further away from the IR will always be proportionally magnified and likewise the superimposed anatomy will be proportionally attenuated.

  • Your right about everything, except for the front and back which is all overpojection. (if you don't believe me, ask a radiologist)

In the video you say, we can't see the heart as well as before because it's a PA-view. But i think you are trying to say, we can't see the heart as well as before, because this is a PA-view which makes the heart look smaller then a AP-view.

Important is that viewers of this clip know that the PA is the most realistic view of the heart, and the AP a magnified view.

  • on that note, AP's are so rare, one thing I have to be careful of is differentiating an AP from.. well? an enlarged heart. Sometimes you can tell by clarity. (whatever is closer to the IR is cleaner)

  • @Michel423

Yap you're right, heart is visible in both AP and PA views but its better visible in the AP view since its more distant from the potter bucky making it bigger.

Most of chest exams are PA except when we're working with small children or other specific cases..

  • @f0XxXxXxX What do you mean by "better visible"? If you're talking about magnification this is a bad thing! CTR is less accurately measured, and there is a loss of clarity. Bigger isn't better...

  • @Michel423 I understand what you mean, but I'm not sure what you mean by overprojection? Superimposition?

  • It should be easier to see the heart with a PA view because the heart is right up against the film.

  • @z040812 one of several things wrong with this video.....

  • Thank you David.A lot of help for a RT student like me.

  • thank you very much!

  • thanks this video was bomb!!! I like how you showed all those xrays with disease, my fav is pneumonia :)
