Fantastic music - conjures up so many wonderful images...these things cannot really be expressed in words and are best left to the music....lovely video.
it was "I love a Mystery" I don't remember when, but the theme haunted me. It has a feeling tone unlike anything else-- that 1st few measures, so unresolved, and sad. . . Can't say what it feels like, only exists in music.
Instead of simply allowing the music to be siphoned off at the end, it should rise into an ultimate dynamic of volume playing on the same melody while shifting into a slightly different phase of the song. This would be outstanding
I was about 4 or 5 years old in Winnipeg Canada and there was a Sunday afternoon music program introduced with this. Something went Twang! in my little brain and I became a music lover and performer for the next 64 years.
I can't express in words what this conjures in my mind but it is my personal, special, wonderful world. Thank you Jean Sibelius from the depths of my musical soul.
Sibelius! melancholy music and also great compositions. Perhaps reflecting the Finnish character. I live in a Mediterranean country so this type of music is rather depressing. Nevertheless, I like it and will listen to it whenever I can. Great composer.
So what if they drank bit too much? It was very common on that time :O and if I could make this kind of music when i'm wasted i would drink all day long! :D Hyvä suami ristus me jyrätään!
Sorry if I tell you this, but. Sibelius (The National Composer), Akseli Gallen-Gallela (The National Painter), Eino Leino (The National Poet) were heavy drinkers and spent their free times in Kämp-restaurant, but whattahell.
Well, Canada's first prime minister, John A. MacDonald was an alcoholic was went to parliament drunk sometimes and he was one of the men who helped bring a good chunk of Canada together. Not that I encourage alcoholism or anything, but just to say that drunks can be brilliant as well.
You are right! It^s a pity:the first beautiful imagination was spoiled! I love this Valse with Karayan! It^s not bad also with Vladimir Fedosseev as conductor.
This was played at my father's funeral - he loved classical music and this summed up his life - the despair and the joy....the ups and downs...

Read a bit about him, he sounds amazing. Through periods of deep depression and solitude to blinding glory and triumph. The swans of his youth lol.

08 December 1865 This day when he was born Jean Sibelius, that was the date and time God completed the beauty of the world.

Such a strange piece. What gives it it's odd flavour? That falling note at the end of each phrase. . . very moving. Does it say: Finnish?

Is THIS the Valse Triste which is paraphrased by Gyorgy Cziffra? (or is it only a match in name of composition?)
