The obvious way to avoid a bear attack is simple. Always wear a bear costume when walking outdoors. That way if the bear sees you, it will think you are one of its own kind and ignore you. Obvious when you think about it.

I would have liked to know what the bear spray does/contains, rather than this not quite (but getting there) fail of a "5 sec blast". I suppose it's peppery irritant. No matter, I shall look elsewhere. I wonder if it would work on an aggressive puma. Maybe not if it was wearing sunglasses.

Guys in Alaska have shown that if a bear wants something in the tent, he will drag it off. Don't know what good the bear spray will do in the tent unless he bites through it, but that ol 44 mag even shot into the air once will probably deter them. @p52ntwrk Well actually many studies have been done and from 1992-2005 people that used firearms to protect themselves were injured 50% of the time. The people who used bear spray were injured 2% of the time and there injures were far less severe then those with guns. Another study showed the spray was effective 92% of the time and guns were effective 67% of the time over 20 years. Research shows it takes an average of 4 direct hits with a bullet to stop a bear.

They say that when you're in grizzly country, you should carry a mace can and wear a bell to warn the bear.

I've also heard how to tell the difference between grizzly scat and black bear scat.

Black bear scat has berries and bits of honey comb in it. Grizzly scat has mace cans and bells.

Funny joke! :) And true. To my understanding, mace is crystalline in nature and hits the fur of the bear or dog, then quickly dries and sticks to the hair - so it doesn't work. This is the big difference between mace and pepper spray - besides the more aggressive effect of pepper spray. So what I'm saying is that mace is not good to count of when the attacker is a furry creature - pepper is better. This is what I've heard - you might want to ask around.

Ive heard most bear attack arent when you meet a mother and her cubs, but when you are between them. In that case, the mother cant run away to protect the cub, but instead attack the person.

Black Bears and Grizzly are different. Lay down and cross your hands across the back of you neck if a Griz has you. If you do that with a Black Bear, they will only eat you. You have to fight a Black Bear. Running in either case, only provokes the chase response. A good bear spray is a positive first response...then a sizable fire arm, then the lay-down-ya-got-me if it's a Griz, and fight-for-your-life if it is a Black Bear.

I just spoke with two mountain bikers who saw a bear running from them through the bush. They said it was moving so fast that it would have been impossible to shoot it had they wanted to. Thus, the opposite is true. They can run AT YOU so fast that defense has to be within seconds.

FYI : A man was just attacked by a black bear near Sacramento, CA, after he accidentally got near the momma and her cub. He tried to run which, of course, failed. It caught him & chomped on him pretty good.

I saw another "expertvillage" video presented by someone else and it was laughably horrible.

This guy did a pretty good job with one exception. He suggested its safer to sleep INSIDE of a tent. Well, I've heard of bears attacking people inside of tents.... and when you're inside, you can't spray the bear's face with bear spray. The bears got you in its mouth, but the tent fabric is shielding its face from being sprayed.

Anybody else have any thoughts on this?

I agree that a shotgun wouldn't kill a bear, instantaneously, anyway. But a blast to the face close up would stop it and it would eventually die. Thats common sense.

Now, a shotgun blast to any other part of the bear's body may or may not be protective. It could anger the bear into a frenzy against the human. But a shot to the face? The bear would stop in its tracks just the same as any other living creature.

A weapon would stop a bear if you hit it.
