Addicts know they are wrong and are usually embarrassed about it, However,addicts can't' quit on their own. They will never tell themselvbes NO. There must be intervention by someone who has that person interest at heart. I guess greed superceded the hypocratic oath in Mike's case. It was the doctors' responsibility to say no. I think this song does not only result to the drug morphine and it's numbing abilities.
I think MJ is also saying how some ppl are like morphine. They numb and cause anestisia in our lives... I mean that metaphorically.

Reading what kind of stuff he has used and for how long, it's a miracle that he managed to live this long. He must have been strong inspite of everything. If it had only been 10 concerts and not 50 he might have pulled it off. Two albums coming and he'd would have made the greatest comeback ever. it's repetitive because addiction is based on taking the dose over and over again. So in this case repetition does makes sense.
Though I wouldn't say it's too repetitive. Not more than it's neccessary.
BTW it's a witty song: the drug talking to the addicted and put the need of a drug into such music is just brilliant.
