Apocalypto is an increadibly well made action adventure film. The setting is original, the story is great and the ending is brilliant. The violence also, is not over the top it's realistic.

I don't think the focus was on the actual culture of the Mayans - but more on the culture of "MAN" - Our destructive tendencies.

It was interesting- we saw three levels/chapters of violence/disunity - The Lead Jaguar, in the beginning plays a sort of a cruel joke on a fellow "tribeman"; Jaguar's father plays an even cruler joke on the same guy. It was like the Russian Doll in reverse:

i thought it was a great enjoyable movie. its not timeless or anything but it was a ride! as far as telling a message... there was a great deal told in the beauty of the costume design but everyone seems to overlook it as a compliment to mayan culture. and, like it or not the mayans did make sacrifices. the dirty jokes are part of all human nature. and gore is mels style.

I was not saying the story or sets or costumes or anything else was accurate, I was saying that to call a movie racist because it had in it human sacrifices similar to ones that we do have record of would be similar to saying the movie gladiator is racist for showing people killing each other in the colosseum because the fight wasn't historically accurate. a quick lesson in mayan culture history: mayan cities dont have evidence of human sacrifices the way they portrait it in the movie, all mayan cities were abandoned at least 200 years before the arrival of the europeans, the the theme of the apocaypse that the movie has is wrong for the mayan culture, as all the events that happend in the movie that were just a couple of days long in reality is a time period of at least 1000 years...
