I've always liked Simon's playing. I attended his drum clinic here in Tampa many years ago. If memory serves, it was at the old Sheraton Hotel on Hillsborrough Ave that has since been knocked down and replaced with the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. That was back in the day when Thoroughbred Music was still around. Anybody else out there remember the "good ol' days" of Thoroghbred Music?
Amazing Drummer! Caught my eye when he played on Stanley Clarke's Rocks Pebbles & Sand Album, and was incredible on Jeff Beck's There and Back album! Check out the cut Space Boogie. Simon rips it hard on that cut! One of the Baddest Rock/Fusion drummer I've ever seen
@boudou701 why not? sure, a good drummer doesnt need a big kit and so on... but if he performs best with such a kit and makes good use of it (as XxStrongDrums1996xX said)
my friend used to work with simon on the toto tours, and is still good friends with him to this day, they occasionally chat to each other when they both have time, and my friend says that simon is a really great guy to get on with :)
also said the same about jeff pocaro as he worked with him as well, wwas great to get on with :)

What a hack! Well if the rough sounding roll doesn't put you to sleep the lame attempt to build a solo from it sure will. What a sad excuse for a drum solo.
What a sublime piece of work, it's rare to see that kind of control and difficult to make the drums sound so harmonious and melodic. He's a drumming ninja!
@bassmanjoe idiot... there are always few people who press dislike by accident, and you get all pissed.... about 150 000 views can surely have about 10 accidental dislikes... and what do you even care?! goddamned, 1 people doesn't have a clue...
Maybe Lars Ulrich should take some drum lessons from him, and also this says what Lars's Green St. Anger kit should have looked like! :P Btw I do love Metallica!
This guy is a diddle maniac..., rolls like lightning and chops like a machine. But best of all is his control of it all. AND! Every piece of that kit sounds immaculate..but, the ride on his left sounds so effin' nice...what is it? The lathing looks like it could be a ReZo..Anyone know?
@BurningTheRoots ... Simon has been using some prototype cymbals based on the Zildjian Armand range, his ride being a 22"" version of that, and 17 18 and 19 crash's. They sound beautiful don't they!
@fivepiece i think it may have a lot to do with the angle your toms are at. Most hipster drummers these days keep their toms flat as dinner plates. Id rather angle them so that my natural arm/wrist motion hits them to produce just the right sound.
Each drummer seems to have his/her own personal "comfort zone" for tom height and angle, which seems perfectly reasonable. For me it has worked out to be roughly a 30' tilt with the lowest part of the rim being around the same height as my elbow (give or take a couple inches).
Those mounted toms are practically shoulder height. No way could I hope to play smoothly on a setup like that; I'd constantly be sticking the shit out of those rims.
@fivepiece yeah i stared playing to very high toms and when i lowered them i gained alot of speed when doing a fill. So relax ;D it just takes time getting used to =)
@fivepiece hes pretty short i think???, i have the same problem, i play 20" bass if i can get away with it and its fine, but struggle on 22", 24" is outa question unless i sit so high i feel like im gonna tip forwards...suks being short, that might be why tho.
I think Simon Philips is awesome and I know I'm no where near as talented as he is, but this solo was pretty shitty, especially compared to his other stuff. Sure its difficult but it sounds terrible.
I like the 7/8, its just a fun time to play. Farther into it I started picking up some 13 before the BD rolls. I always liked his work in Give Blood with Pete T.
