Dave is wrong though - just like for private schools or private insurances, even though they are not "managed directly by the government", the sole fact that the government provides subsidies or "tax incentives" of any sort channels money into sectors where it would have gone in a "different amount" without the incentive (people will buy more cars just because the gov gives an incentive or a tax deduction - even though they wouldn't have otherwise). Yes but what if you donated a more realistic 10K and your tickets are worth a more realistic 3k. You are then allowed to take a 10k tax deduction even though you only donated 7K. Thats what the reporter was talking about.

And I highly doubt if dave ramsey only donated 10k. call UT knox and ask how much he donates, its an unbelievable amount . and if you get a 10k tax deduction does not mean your tax bill was reduce by 10k there's a difference between a tax deduction and a credit.

Part2 Tax wise, many individuals either don't itemize, itemize but fail to claim a charitable deduction, or even claim the deduction but have limitations that reduce or negate any tax benefit. Never have I had a client tell me they gave money to a church or university because of the deduction. Their gifts were irrespective of any tax benefit. I think the view of the media & other liberals is that government is the source of all things good, & if someone or entity benefits, its only by gov't.

Those who believe government owns all property and we are allowed to have a portion, then they will see the contribution as Government allowing the universities to have these monies. Our government chose that program to support as a tax deduction, but didn't do the same for the others deemed unworthy of our support/money/subsidy. If I spend the same $10,000 on a donation to a university, I don't pay taxes on it. That tax incentive is a subsidy any way you slice it. The word "subsidy" will become inappropriate when, and only when, that purchase of a Britney Spears CD or a Dave Ramsey book gets the same tax treatment as a donation to the university.

Correction: A 'subsidy' is something (tangible or monetary [as in REAL money]) that the Govt. gives to assist an entity to operate effectively.

How can the Govt. 'give' something to an entity, that it never had to start with? If this were true, you'd be able to deduct expenses from your business that you never had. You can't do that... They can't do that... therefore in these cases, they are NOT subsidies, so get over it.
