The fumes got trapped under the cabin area. If the fumes become concentrated and don't disperse when it ignites you get a boom, just like this.

Something else other than just the gas went up.
Petrol splashed around like that will burm but unless contained it should not have exploded like that. Besides this is typical fire fighting practise to set fire to Petrol on a wrecked plane or boat car what ever and then find best ways to put it out. He's not as dumb as he looks.
