I saw this in the theater! I love animals, too, but it's obvious it wasn't the real wolf going over, it was a look-alike dummy.

I think this scene was paying tribute to Warner Bros.' Looney Tunes "Road Runner/Wyle E. Coyote" cartoons. Wyle E. had plenty of his share of going over the cliffs.

That wolf falling off the cliff is such a memorable scene. How many times you see something like that? It was more exhilarating than to see Milo Cat fall down that cliff in "Milo & Otis". I'm sure they made a wolf dummy and hurled it off the cliff.

It makes me wonder how many times that SAME wolf chased Benji, let's think. They met at the hunter's house, followed by the wolf stalking Benji. The next day, he chased Benji twice, then nothing for 40 or so minutes, followed by that final scene. So that's about five times, including the hunter's house incident near the beginning.

To all: That same wolf was like what, pretty much harassing Benji since they met face-to-face at the hunter's house, and since then the wolf had been stalking, chasing and going after Benji and the cubs until a laugh out loud bear chased him away... '

The wolf did not return for a good 40 minutes (near the end), where the finale sent the wolf off the cliff...

Amazing... The wolf was my favourite character, besides Benji.

I remember watching this movie and it made my heart ache with sorrow. I mean with Benji being lost and his master calling out his name. Brought tears in my eyes seeing that Benji knows he cannot leave the forest yet without saving the cubs. I remember the ending of Benji lying at the cliff edge before the helicopter flies out. I hope that means his master found him. Please say they rescued him.
