One of the theories I've heard of how the Blob's work is that, the trout mistake the blob for a large group of Daphnia and that is probably why when the trout takes it you usually always find it at the back of the trout's throat.
I've never heard it called a porcupine fly before but it would be an ideal name for it..This fly is fished in the lochs and lakes here in the U.K for rainbow trout mostly all through the season. I'm always amazed how it takes fish in all conditions..
@DavieMcPhail Thanks, I know that a good friend caught a large speckled trout in the middle of the summer. They were amazed when he said that he caught it on a "porcupine fly" which was described to me as a yellow and red mess. Thanks Davie
I am a member of a couple but to be honest I find it hard to get the time to go on them as I get lots of questions here on youtube which I don't. mind..
The main colour from the back of the fly are chartreuse-flo-orange, pink-orange, light coral-coral, flo-yellow-Sunburst, chartreuse-black and this is just to get you started...
When i was at the G.A.C on sunday, you had tied a blob. It was a black one and one of the other guys said he had his biggest brownie on it. Can you tell me the name of this blob, please.
I mostly use a Kamazan B175 but the one I used on the video was a Carp hook size 6 which a friend wanted. Other hooks I have tyed the blob on are B270 size 12 and B160 size 8.
I fish a blob on the point with buzzers here in NZ for wild lake rainbows and it is very effective in the summer over weedbeds. I also fish a dark coloured one stripped like a streamer and it's also effective on lake browns here.
I have tied some similar to this with colored deer hair. I have caught many varieties of pan fish with it. I am excited to give it whirl with Steelhead this autumn, as an egg offering. Thank you Davie. Keep them coming, I'm sure I speak for many when I say, "my tying has improved since your posts".
The fish take this fly in all ways and like you said even as an egg.The first time I saw the blob being fished it was being pulled very fast on a sinking line on Lake of Menteith here in Scotland the fish just kept coming taking the fly like it was the best thing since sliced bread...
It is fished in many other ways too with great success..
Thanks for another great fly, i cann't see that fly catching wild trout in the U.S. (unless they thought it was an egg), but i have cought stocked trout on a fly just like that, and i beat it would catch Panfish too.
can you use deer hair for the yellow end part of the fly?
numberboyowns 7 months ago
Hi numberboyowns,
You really need the blob fritz to get the translucent effect but I'm sure if you just use deer hair it would still catch fish..

Davie,
Would this fly work for tailing carp in shallow water riffles during spawing... Like to replicate a mullberry or bug?
zachthefisherman 8 months ago
Hi zachthefisherman,
It would be certainly worth trying as it does give a great impression of an egg.Let me know how you get on if you give it a go..ATB Davie

Absolute killer for stillwater carp, especially where bank anglers have been chumming with minced maize or whole kernel corn!
I've tied up a few without deer hair and with some lead wrapping on the shank to enable faster sinking for deeper water.

Is this a spring fly and is it also reffered to as a porcupine fly?

Lots of UK flies will never make sense to me. Im guessing some are specialized for what we call "truck trout." lol

Hi Davie where do you get you dyed deer hair cheers KENNYFLY1
KENNYFLY1 2 years ago
Hi KENNYFLY1,
I've bought most of my deer hair from the Glasgow Angling Centre but to be honest sometimes you have to dye your own to get the brighter colours...

does the deer hair cos the fly to float
rgers123 2 years ago
Hi rgers123,
Yes, the deer hair is to help keep the blob near the surface and as well add a bit more colour..
