Mr. Smythe reported 15,760 victims in 1938. Iris Chang said 300,000 in 1997 in her book The Rape of Nanking.

The IMTFE gave the verdict that at least 200,000 Chinese both civilians and POWs were murdered in Nanking on the first 6 weeks of Japanese occupation, what else do you want ?

The Chinese govt did not pay Harold Timperley for writing " What War Means" which was a compilation of his own reports published in the Guardian of UK earlier.
Since the book was a factual description of Japanese war crimes in Nanking , KMT found it useful to expose Japanese atrocities in order to get international help for the war against Japan, so KMT bought the right of translation of the book into Chinese only.
