@MrTanookiMario Yes that is correct. John gets bored when there is too much repetition:-) And so do I, that is why each verse is harmonized differently...though I guess most folks won´t notice.
Maybe Roger Dean could produce those Fragile Christmas tree ornaments...for the sake of copyright. And while we are at it I´d like an inflatable Yes logo for the beach next summer.
"Structural, contrapuntal and harmonic complexities of the kind you don't hear in most modern pop/rock, because that stuff is just directed at the lowest common denominator whereas PROG aims higher and dares to challenge the listener in ways that mainstream music rarely if ever manages to."
@kevin4peace Well, to be fair, both our guitarist and our bass player do own and play Chapman sticks (as mentioned in last year's Progmas video). That's actually one being played for the backing on days 13 and 14.
Wow. It's nice to see the Unfolded Like Staircase album in here. My friend Chris Dale contributed his Mellotron for that album. He'll be happy to hear this.
For all of you people interested in prog, there is a great radio show called Friday Night Progressive. You will find it if you insert "Friday Night Progressive" in the search field on Facebook. They play every Friday at 9.00 pm (New York time).I found the station since they wanted to play our music. There is a chat open during the show, so I thought I´d just hang around and see what people had to say. Then I ended up staying for the rest of the show because there was so much interesting music.
"12 structural, contrapuntal and harmonic complexities of the kind you dont hear in most modern pop/rock, because that stuff is just directed at the lowest common denominator, whereas prog ais higher and dares to challenge the listener in ways that mainstream music rarely if ever manager to".
Postscript - For years I thought I maybe I was the only one still listing to Yes & Genesis & Tarkus & even ELP ... and... and ...and... Still constantly seeking new artists with that glorious musical spirit of experimentation - wondering if any other "ladies dancing" still listened to Fragile & got all teary-eyed with "Soon" ... Thanks for posting this. Laughed out loud and made my day so much sweeter. (Just one more mellotron...please...?)
Thank´s for all the good words! If you are interested, keep an eye on our web site somewhere.nu, where you can hear our own songs. More material will appear in the near future.
You have actually accomplished in making EVERY Prog fan in the World Happy this Season :D The Tarkus Tank hiding behind the Tree made me laugh out loud :p And thanks for the Roger Dean reference, he influences my (Band) Logo work and was VERY blessed to have met him :). May YOU get some "rare" Prog CD's or LP's this Christmas! You deserve it! (I posted this at Progulus Internet Radio on FB too ;).
Got the iProg shirt yesterday. In bottlegreen. Awesome design. Only downside is that the black (mellotron on the front and "Play different" does not come out very well. So if you plan on getting a shirt like that, I'd recommend a lighter color.
@35104gs I'm genuinely sorry that it didn't come out right. But that is why I picked a lighter default color in diva blue. Sadly, Spreadshirt either lets you do ONE color or a free selection. I would have locked it down to only lighter ones if I could.
Make no mistake. We adore Prog! That is why we did this. All the stuff that is referenced is my favourite music. If I had not stumbled upon it I would probably be a plumber or something...
@DisgruntledPorcupine IMNHO Unfolded... is one of very, very few prog albums released in the 90s to actually rank right up there with the great classics of the genre. That's why I included it.
guyeylon : Spot on! Even the glass house:-) But there is still one more in that section...that should be the hardest to work out, since I swapped some of the contents with our next song.
"Look at that floating mountain...." is not a direct reference, but it could possibly be a case of unconscious theft....I think I was just thinking of typical Yes choir stuff....maybe. Or maybe I did not think at all. It happened really fast.
Dear old Frank Zappa is one of the influences that forced me into the direction of music. I have to check 'Don't eat the yellow snow'. Maybe there is an unconscious influence, there. I did not think of anything at all.
@MrSulfurMustard If that IS another song, it's not at all deliberate. I'd recorded the lead vocal and in the lyrics I'd written "Look at that floating mountain there!" as directions for an exclamation that I wanted our guitarist (who did the arrangement, recording and mixing) to add, using a voice that wasn't mine. He took the opportunity while our keyboard player was in the studio for the organ solo to write and record that vocal harmony bit with him. He's that good.
I'll add to what Tuvia said with the obvious "Colony of Slippermen" riff at the beginning, and the breaking glass sound off "In a Glass House" by Gentle Giant in the end. That's what I Spotted :)
Thanx a lot TuiviaGering, for sorting out two of the classical ripoffs! I knew that was Bach but could not find it anywhere. A girlfriend at the time had it on tape when I visited her in Glasgow in-95. I loved it and remembered a short sequence of it. Now I´ll go get it :-)
Thx for the 13th day ... that made me laught so much ... :'D
