With numbers like this, Joy Division truly sound like the 'missing link' between such earlier rock innovators as The Doors, The Velvet Underground, The Stooges, Black Sabbath, Roxy Music, Bowie, etc and '80s and '90s alternative acts like Sonic Youth, Live Skull, Band Of Susans, Pixies, Nirvana, Soundgarden, etc. Classic stuff.
"The human heart cries out for help; the human soul implores us for deliverance; but we do not heed their cries, for we neither hear nor understand. But the man who hears and understands we call mad, and flee from him." Kahlil Gibran The Prophet
Ian's voice here especially, and on other tracks from the Peel sessions really echoes of Jim Morrison. I don't know if this is concious on Ian' part but it has a very hauntingly beautiful resonance. Thanks for posting!
@robertkinghalifax you can hear a lot of both morrison and iggy pop in ian's voice, but it is by no means an imitation. it is still distinctly ian curtis
Had not seen this pic on the cover you have there. The one I saw from Anton Corbin was when Ian looked back at the camera as the other 3 went down the steps.
we cant pi point what time joy division are from they were too unique for the 80s and too unique for today..... WAY ahead of thier time and our time now
The guitar riff / drums/ vocals were intoxicatingly grungy for its time...........they say that Joy Division were the inventors of grunge.....very true...........immensely experimental music.........way ahead of their time........
@bala215, lol. there is no similarity between joy division and grunge besides the general fact that they typically have drums, bass guitar, and distorted guitars....also, the grungey sound in this video is rarely the case in other songs. actually, on the album, the guitar sounds less deep and more industrial, imo...
@bala215 Who says Joy Division were the inventors of grunge, 24 year olds? Those of us who were around at the time would usually disagree strongly with such a remark..goth maybe, dark rock, likely and even possibly some sort of proto-thrash-like experiment but definitely not grunge.
...JD's influences ran the gambit from Kraftwerk-Lou Reed (Velvet Underground) and nothing, absolutely nothing JD ever composed could ever be mistaken for grunge. Hell, even that Grunge-Icon-Imbecile Cobain admitted he was heavily influenced by Flipper and flipper sure as Fk wasnt grunge!
The cynic in me thinks that you want this video to be taken down so people will watch your videos (with views so far of a whole 10 people), but I think you're better then that.
Nah I have only just posted my colony vid 31st Aug, I think I prefer the closer version to the Peels but both are excellent, I would never want to get views in such an underhand and quite frankly childlike manner.
May JD live on here and wherever else it may be listened to. :O))
i'm not sure what you mean precisely but if it's this is jd without mh, you're wrong. mh was at the controls often during live performances for both jd and acr, because they weren't that good without him.
drumbo, the nom du disque of beefheart's drummer from the magic band, was notorious for his ability to clearly articulate complex drum patterns and constantly shifting time signatures. this has neither. if that's not what you meant, could you explain to me how the drumming here is 'beefheart-esque', without a thumbs down or some form of expletive (though that's what one expects from voicing a dissenting opinion on youtube).
why so angry? i was simply making the point that the drumming sounds like nothing in beefheart. just because 'steve' (i assume you mean steven morris) likes beefheart doesn't make his drumming beefheart-esque. and i don't understand how voicing a different opinion is like 'the spanish inquisition'. and finally how am i 'pious'? if you're going to use words of whose meaning you're not certain, look them up. i'm sure 'ian' would have agreed.

Grunge Fuck. Don't get me wrong Kurt Cobain had his talents. However compared to Ian he wasn't fit to tie his shoe laces. Grunge my arse.

Brilliant song - brilliant guitar Sound - Ian Curtis's lyrics were often based on books he had read or films he had watched - pure genius.

Joy Division were so rhythmic - it all went pear shaped with New Order. Hooky lost the ability to play bass. Different sound altogether I guess.

Are the "peel sessions" live editions? They all seem to have a more agressive voicework and guitar.

My favourite version of the song. Excellent Captain Beefheart-esque drumming by Steve makes this song.
