  • I feel a Marcel Marceau moment coming on:...

    ...

    ...

    There, I needed that!

  • I remember I was flying on a Pan-Am flight in 1984, Boeing 747-200, in a Los Angeles - Paris flight, when this song was playing in my headset, trekking our way over the ocean... Who would knew I would heart this beautiful art again..

  • but one thing to see that this is not live: you can't see the "rhythmin' computer : Korg minipops 7"!!!! I think he didn't take it on stage because he didn't want anyone to notice, which computer he was using for doing oxygene!!! At the backside of the Vinyl record he didn't write : rhythmin' computer: Korg minipops!!! he only wrote: rhythmin' computer!!!!

in 2:39 you can see him changing the keypad, but the sound of the RMI Harmonic Synthesizer sound continues playing!!! And one other thing:

  • @Hethond Just search for RMI Harmonic Synthesizer on google!!! this thing is used for the melody part at 2:39 !!! the thing he's playing on here looks completely different... more like his farfisa!!!

  • Mime artist

  • Worst. Miming. Ever.

  • Der beste! Wir erinnern ihn und mögen seine wunderbare Musik. Grüße aus Bulgarien.

  • ...and all the time he was thinking "Do I make you horny baby,.. do I,.. do I ???"

  • looks like lawrence llewelyn bowen borrowed jarres style from this era!

  • Doing the unplugged version

  • He looks soo young!!

  • this proves electronic music is good for the soul. Jarre looks the same today, the man that never ages.

  • @alexnordh It's not the music - he was preserved by the clouds of dry ice vapour! :-)

  • IMpresionante!!!!!!

  • say 1970's and i say: ''Jean Michel Jarre, man i love this music since 35 years, oxygene, equinoxe, magnetic fields, simply gorgeous music.

  • Looks like it was sponsored by ARP!

  • that cameraman smoke too much (mybe h'es from the sketch on Monty python flying circus, Mr Smoketoomuch)

  • superb miming

  • I want those synths, I'm not going to lie.

  • Beethoven, Mozart, Debussy, Chopin, Vivaldi, Tchaïkovsky, Wagner...Vangelis and JM Jarre !

    Genius.

MERCI, c'est génial ça, j'adore : inoubliable, anthologique.

  • Jean does not make playback anyway. he performed in RO last year if I am not wrong and was awesome!!

  • @silviuradu Yo, but how he was performing. Missing notes and such things. And he had in the background several other musicians. "Place de la Concorde" for example was full playback. Tell me how he played for example the U310, which take response for the strings, and while playing another Synth, the U310 played by itself. Sure it is possible to plug a sequencer into modified analog gear, but it has no sense to play it with the same notes.

  • Super!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I was 5yrs old when this aired, not long after I got completely hooked on Jarre's music and still am today. Better yet, my now 5yrs old son loves synthmusic!

  • forgot to mention vangelis.

  • This music was the forerunner of the eurosound that would introduce the new wave pop sound of the 1980's. 1977 also introduced kraftwerk's trans europe express, donna summer's i feel love by giorgio moroder, and many other groups/performers.

  • Awesome Fingers!!!

  • Il était jeune la lol, pour les instrument qui joue tout seul sans les main je suis du même avis que plus bas

  • This is the track that started my love of JMJ`S Music I lay in my bed in 1976 and when I heard this i had to buy the single it was at number 4 in the charts back then.

  • The sweet lead sound heard on Oxygene part IV is in fact the ARP 2600, the grey one from early '70ies, not the 2500.

ARP's are all sounding very good but the old types somewhat better....

  • @vrembrand

Check his video were he walks around the instruments of oxgene. Pretty cool he actually works for his cash. Most keyboards/synthesizers have all that under one button.

Admireable that he keeps the "tradition" in honor by using all his original gear even still today.

  • @vrembrand i agree. the 2600's are better

  • J'adore les instruments qui continuent à jouer lorsqu'on enlève les mains ;)

C'est affreux ce que les TV pouvaient produire à l'époque.

Cela n'enlève rien au talent de JMJ mais ce genre de vidéo, euh non merci!

  • Suberb lip-synching.

  • j'ai ta'ime Jean Michel Jarre!

  • Here the technique is ruling, but I enjoy the tune most! Watch my simple try!

  • k bedoel bas westerweel

  • hej dat is toch bas westerman hij was ook presentator van klokhuis

  • this made me itch a bit, its like he didn't know his own song. Hey JMJ, if you're gonna mime, make it convincing! I say it with love!

  • Interesting, this track was made on an Eminent 310 and RMI symth basicly. Both instruments are not there.

  • @albertspyker

first thingie see too differ equipment than org song

weird whos gonna share / sleep whit a arp 2500???

  • one of the best tunes ever made :D

  • Ok guys, Jean Michel lost his triggers, bring more smoke darn it!

  • JMJ's face looks like thinking "Those idiot TV morons that don't allow me to play my fucking own music live and wants some fake stuff on the keys for the show..."

  • JE T'AIME QUAND T'ES A FOND DE JEAN MICHEL JARRE ... quand ta main elle joue tu te retournes dans tous les sens parceque t'es seul à jouer

  • this riff is used in crane machines all over england

  • who cares if is live yes, if you got a contract and made a record you gotta promote...what else?

  • lo mejor de lo mejor

  • the father of electronic chillout grooves right here lol

  • One of the best Masterpieces from Michel.

    thanks for posting

  • ...piękne, a pamiętacie "tu studio czwarte" pierwsze stereo w polskim radiu:)

  • Eminent 310 a classic :)

  • He was young in this video JMJ.

  • What the fuck says that nederland dick on the end ? I don´t understand what he shitting...

  • this is awesome i remember my dad playing this when i was a child and it stuck

  • perhaps the keyboards was connected to the amps via blue tooth.

  • People, you are not looking at a concert of JMJ here!...It's only a clip for a hitparade on tv, so what if the synths are not plugged in and he plays the wrong notes......Most important: this song is GREAT!!

  • Oooo... that's so embarrassing. I had to do that once - playing for a video and giving the thousand-mile-stare when the keyboards weren't even plugged in.

    It feels really stupid.

I know Jean-Michel is a young kid in this video, but reminds me a bit of Dorian Grey - like 900 years old, but never aged, still dressed for dinner, off to play the church organ upside down in Draculas Castle. Sigh.

Once again though, the um... keyboards aren't plugged in.

  • What a legendary song. This was light years ahead of its time for 1977. Just like Kraftwerk were so ahead with Autobahn in 1975. The Oxygene album from 1976 is unbelievable. JMJ looks so young here! He doesn't look 29 at all!

  • Poor Jean Michael, He must of felt a right narna! At least he's not making an effort to make it look real.

  • he's not playing live...

  • Waw! amazing!! The ARP2500 and ProSoloist were not used in Oxygene: it all was ARP2600, the lead of Oxygene par tIV and many more + VCS3 filtersweeps and AKS, Eminent strings and RMI basses and sequences

  • That's only show, I think those instruments were just borrowed for the gig. At least there were ARPs, like on the Oxygene cover...

Back then JMJ had not a crew to transport all his heavy equipment. He travelled alone from gig to gig (1976).

  • Ah, knobs, sliders, tactile feedback, real-time controls, the golden days of synth music!

  • sorry, this is fake... look at the synthesizers. he dont play the full part of music at one synth, he changes the instrument randomly, sometimes he plays wrong notes. i know, i can play oxygene... :(

  • @szabee0428 At the time this was made it was normal for artists to mime to their own recordings on TV - it's all about presentation

  • that sucks

  • @szabee0428 at this time for TV it was common for singers to lip synch and performers to mime to their recordings. In the 1950's,1960's,1970's,and even 1980's it was not unusual for this being done for TV.

It sure born naturally creatively beats the hell out of the overuse of auto-tune that came into the music industry market in 1997..

  • a good definition, of art.

  • merci jerome; on ne s'enlasse pas d'ecouter ce chef-d'oeuvre eblouissant.

  • in the salad days of his youth........

  • Wow he really did start young...

Was he 12 when he released Oxygene??

    :-)

  • Actually 28. But he has allways looked very young.

  • no,he was in his late twenties, born in 1948,i think.

  • well i dont really think you can beat klaus

  • Maybe he was told to mime it by the producers of the show. He's not a bad composer either, albums such as oxygene and equinoxe would have never sold so many copies if he was a bad composer.

  • The Best

  • Is that the early proto-type of R2-D2 on the left side of the ARP2500?

  • now young does he look, This version is better than the original

  • playback...que lastima me gusta jarre

  • But he pretenets pretty bad.

  • Like Vangelis, a God of electronic music. Magnificent in the studio. Spectacular stageshows with no-doubt obscene budgets, spoiled only slightly by the fact that surely everyone knows that a Jarre 'live' performance is no more 'live' than a group of musicians pretending to play instruments and keyboards to specially-prepared backing tapes. Otherwise, I can't fault the guy.

  • you're right but you have seen how hard it was for oxygene tour...and that there were mistakes...it's very hard

  • jean michel looks so young there. i dont care if he's miming. and was that a korg sigma on top of double keyboard?

  • It's an ARP - I think an ARP Explorer.

  • I knew right away he was not playing "live", but who cares? It was nice to see Jarre with his ARP 2500.

Cheers for a great historic upload

    D.:)

  • LOL... nice playback!... as if he EVER hit a tone ... ! but still fun to watch!

  • Were all those pegboards and sliders really part of an instrument, or is that for show?

I don't remember Arp making anything that big, but I'm no expert.

  • It's an ARP 2500. The dual keyboard is custom I think.

  • Fantastic! Thanx for posting. Great sound and a great song...after all these years Oxygene still stands out as one of the most inspirational electronic albums ever made. And those vids from the 70s...just gotta love em!

  • I very much doubt anyone watching this in 1977 would've been too bothered about whether it was live or not...I expect most people couldn't take their eyes off the ARP. You've also got to remember that virtually all music shows like this of the day ...and well in to this century...featured guitarists playing without their instruments plugged in, drumsticks not coming within 6 inches of the drumhead and people 'playing' keyboards when no keyboard parts were heard in the song.

  • @RobS1972 I watched with my older brther and i loved it Toppop was great

  • @RobS1972

And soimetimes the drummer switch place with the keyboardist during playback, and noone will notice :-P

  • yeah the guy is a genious but he only played the songs once in his life

it's like if paul mccartney stopped playing after the beatles , never took the song live....

    un-acceptable

i love jarre.... but as a musician i feel cheated when i see his ''CRAZY CONCERT or live performance...

  • He can afford to perform like that.

    touché

  • This scene is a funny imitation.

  • Awsome to see all that gear! but he is terrible at pretending to play, you can see him being lazy with chords. Bad overdub :(

  • he must have been born rich

  • Some little kids from Holland must have seen this show on TV and when they grew up, they became Trance DJs and producers. They owe all to guys like Jean Michel Jarre and Vangelis. ;-D

  • Yeah, totally! I can imagine Rank 1, Ferry Corsten, Tiësto, Vincent de Moor and of course Armin van Buuren getting hooked on electronic music through this!

  • fantastic!!!!! i never forget this theme but i don´t know who play it, at last i find it!!!!!!! thanks for posting

  • ¿WHAT?.

    I can´t believe it.

  • hammer!!

  • geil :o)

  • more smoke

  • Huge Playback!

  • ese clavecín haha

  • Not. Enough. Smoke.

  • lmao

  • superb

  • umm,. he mustve been on lsd or something,. what do you guys think?

  • Nah, I think he got smoked in that very video with an odd gassy substance ;-)

  • watch oxygen live in your living room to see how .

  • Of course it's playback lol.

How can you play Oxygene with only 2 hands ?

Even in concert, only a few parts of a track are played live. Vangelis do the same, and I suppose many electronic artists use playback for some parts of a track.

  • Playback or not, Oxygene IV rules!!!

  • The original tracks is recorded whitout sequencers and would be har to playback live. It would involve alot of people ;-)

  • Yeah, right. ARP 2500 doesn't make sound like that. I LOOOVE JMJ, but this video is fake.

  • yes, this video has nothing to do with playing live. he hits double keys, stops playing, changes synths, twist knobs etc etc and the sound and melody remains the same.

    i love the melody though!

  • Latest Yamaha, Korg, Roland workstations can't reproduce this sound in its fullness, and this comes from the 1970s, pretty amazing! It is like Stradivari violin, nobody exactly knows how he did it all.

  • Jesus!! a classic played in playback or not doesn't bother, this is from that time any way.

  • yep

  • Yes its a ridiculous playback. I like Jean Michel too, but he should be more convincent in this video. LOL

  • I totally agree with you. :D

  • For the synth-spotters: The massive one is an ARP 2500 but I dont recognise any others

  • eminent, i htink jarre was the and still is the only one that can make a eminent "sing" like this. All others are copycats ;)

  • Come on...! I like Jarre, but this is a rather ridiculous playback, lol!

  • great song, those synths must have been very expensive at the time, he must have made a few quid from somewhere or come from a wealthy background?

  • Mauvais mime... mais bon compsiteur! Sur ce coup, il a quand même fait fort, Oxygène reste de loin son meilleur album, avec Equinoxe.

  • oxigene 1976 the very best album jean michel jarre

  • Il joue n'importe comment!!!lol

    mais vrément c'est genial

  • great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!5*

  • thats great. thx. :-)

  • he's so sweet.......

  • wow..rare indeed! Well done..its a shame he(and everyone else on top of the pops for a while) mimed:(

  • Wow, this is rare. I have never seen this before. Great vid, Jerome!

  • Thanks for uploading this video, Jerome. :D Absolutely superb.

    Kanta

  • He really did look young then and with so much hair. Looking quite stilted but it was probably one of his earliest 'live' performances.

  • Excellent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
