I have my students put a thumbtack in the inside bottom of their project. That way, they know when they are trimming, if and when they hit the tack, they know they have trimmed deep enough. Beginners tend to trim right through the bottom of their project. I've done it myself. =:c)
I have put pieces on the wheel before that where leather hard and they always fly off even if I do not have the speed on high. I see here in this video that you just set in on there and off you go, any good tips?
If you have your Giffen Grip correctly set for your wheel head you won't get any wobble and if you use it correctly you won't get triangular pots. I don't use mine much but most of the complaints I hear are from not using the tool correctly rather than any issues with the tool itself. Also, using the grip isn't a "wrong" way just as trimming on the wheel head isn't really a "right" way. They are just ways.
A perfectly adjusted wheel head and a not perfectly level pot will cause an uncentered foot. and depending on how tall or how off level your pot it may be uncorrectable with the grip. The triangle pots are from trimming soft or trimming straight walled cylinders either you squeeze it enough that it pushs into a triangle or not enough and it spins and leaves a grip stripe. The right or wrongness of using a tool rather than learning a technique is up to the individual I use it but hate when I do.
Tapping is what I like the least in pottery. I tap for thinness and I only hear different sounds, when I do, because where I go for practice there is always loud music.
I tap for centering and it doesn't always work. I keep asking "What if I tap at 3 o'clock every time the pot is off center at 9 o'clock? How do I know when to tap? If I do it randomly, it also doesn't work.
And if I try to center by closing my fingers around the pot, it just flies off the wheel.
Oh! Re: centering, can you make a demo on how and why a cylinder is centered at the bottom, but not at the rim, and off and on in between and how to correct it?
i pretty much had a field day on the wheel and threw about 60 small bowls, and basically they were the scapegoats for tap centering. a good majority did fly off, but the last dozen i got the hang of it.
i prefer tim's method over sleach's method.. simply put, i can't actually tap the pot without spending five minutes centering, but tim's method is more direct, just use your fingers to lightly nudge the piece into center.
Hey.. I get why you say you "can't stand a Giffin grip". I posted a trimming video a few days ago using my Giffin grip and the grip wobbles so much... I had no idea until I watched the video. But, I can't get tap centering down either. Thanks for the video, and thanks for commenting on mine.
Also, if the clay ribbons stick, you can wet the pot and trim that way.... but I agree with you, it is better to just wait.
No offence, Marihani but your recycle video, makes me wonder why u don't like to rec, way to much work involved! Sart out with 3lb tubs with lids, throw your scraps in there evry day pour a lttle thrwing wtr on top each time, stir, leave lid on if ness, when full put in canvas like you do, there you go.
It's like washing tools or dishes I do it practicaly every friday, and wedge on mon.

Oh ok, it took me forever to find dble video but it was worth it,Thnx. When working with 30 or more stdts, my old instcr found a dth rib the hard way, while scooping barehanded, recycle, nearly lost his hand or some fingers. A narly infection for months! I warn all of my students about this rib!

practice, practice, practice.
took me almost three days to get it down.
i pretty much had a field day on the wheel and threw about 60 small bowls, and basically they were the scapegoats for tap centering. a good majority did fly off, but the last dozen i got the hang of it.
i prefer tim's method over sleach's method.. simply put, i can't actually tap the pot without spending five minutes centering, but tim's method is more direct, just use your fingers to lightly nudge the piece into center.

Flexible Metal rib of death check out the double walled vessel video. The trim tool is bamboo with watch spring bent tempered tied and glued.

Why don't you like Griffin Grips? Having a tiny workshop, I hate wasting clay and having to recycle it, so the grip saves me both time and effort.
