I can't imagine the majority of people who are still on IE6, know what is a Web Browser! They won't know that what they are using it massively outdated.
"Under Microsoft's new policy, users who don't want to update their browser can still opt out, but they'll have to make an active decision to do so by running a special toolkit available through Windows. Anyone who has previously been offered a browser upgrade by Microsoft and explicitly refused it will also be exempt from the new updating regime."
Aww man I've been having this debate with my all things technology are pointless dad for about a year now!! Never thought i'd say this, but actually, thank you Microsoft!
Come on, version++; doesn't make any software "better". I taught my friends to go for a browser, which is backwards compatible with their OS and active in dev. No need to i++; all hardware, software, powercords and fuses just to get a holy browser running.
Google Chrome is 99% awesome if they had the drop down list of recently typed URLs, I would go back to it. I hate the fact that I have to start typing before URLs show up. They need to fix that.
For all the bickering people do about IE6, It was the first browser to implement CSS 'properly' It was then soon matched and then bypassed by other browsers, but IE6 blazed the trail for web standards. The problem is they got complacent and didn't progress further for almost ten years! I am a huge fan of IE9, even though I don't use. Im just saying, lets just give it a proper burial and not treat it like the red-headed step child of internet browsers that wont go away.
IE 9 is not available for Windows XP. So even if you wanted to use it, you couldn't. Unless you upgraded to Vista or 7. The most you can get is IE 8.
The only good thing about IE 6 was the UI. It was more customizable, potentially cleaner (depending on your configuration) but the rendering was horrible. IE 7 was a little better, but not much. IE 8, about the same. Then IE 9... the best version of IE they've ever released. I can actually respect someones decision to use IE now.
I do know people who still use 10 year old computers. They can't even run more recent versions of Windows, much less recent versions of any Windows software.
@PeterJohn411 That's no excuse for running IE6. Those 10 year old computers can still run the latest version of Firefox as long as they're running Windows 2000.
I am glad Microsoft is forcing upgrades from IE 6 to a later version of IE. As for myself, I have just switched from Firefox to Google Chrome. It seems to update faster than Firefox on my laptop.
@miguel031795 I keep IE on my computer in that off chance that I get a game that somehow requires IE... not very usual... also, some sites (like my dang school's webadvisor site) requires Internet Explorer, and will not work on chrome or firefox... to circumvent that, I installed IE Tab on Google Chrome, and it works just fine!! it emulates your Internet Explorer in a new tab of Chrome... I absolutely love it!! but if I remember right, it won't work if you don't have IE Installed... :S
@Scipiz0a If you have a smartphone with a camera, go download what's called a QR Code Scanner from your marketplace... most, if not all, of them are free... then just go into the qr code scanner, hold your camera pointing to the QR code in the video, and there you go! I believe it's just a link code, but other codes can show you a message, or link to youtube videos, or facebook/(insert social site here) profiles.
At last I still have to use it some times at a local community centre I have asked several times to upgrade to IE8 but it costs them to get the IT person in to come and upgrade, I even tried it myself but I didn't have administrator privileges. The main point is that it doesn't work any more it doesn't display Flash video properly and crashes all the time, long over due if you ask me. I still know people who haven't got used to tabbed browsing!
@kawaiifreak860 Yeah I tried Firefox also no Administrator privileges unfortunately, The computers are pretty old but I think if the put an up to date browser on it they would work a hell of a lot better than they are now,
@kawaiifreak860 The computers are probably 7 or 8 years old running XP some of them have old CRT monitors. I have an old PC around the same age that I use to test stuff out I've got Firefox on it and for web surfing it's fine just slows down when I use more than a couple of programs at the same time. They will have to update them otherwise nobody will be able to get online at all which is good even if it is only IE8 it still better than IE6.
As someone who used to work tech support I agree with your statement. The average user doesn't no what a web browser is. I'd ask them to open a web browser and they would ask whats that?
Finally, my School's computers will get a performance boost. The "tech teacher" at my school knows nothing about technology. He can't even hook up a stereo!
Lmao ie6 is the best ie that microsoft has had in terms of easy to use layout. Sure ie9 looks fancy but the "full screen" layout sucks! The tabs are next to the adress bar and stuff. I like firefox or chrome better anyways because it doesn't crash as much which I also think is something quite stupid. Microsoft developed their own browser on their own system but it works way worse than most 3rd party browsers....
@CaidusPvP To be fair, the most recent version of IE isn't that bad. It still has a long way to go, but it's getting up to par with Chrome and Firefox.
Good, this forced upgrade should have been required when IE 8 came out. I don't believe I know anyone who still uses it. All my family members that don't trust GC or FF all have IE 9 from my own maintenance of their computers, and all my friends either have either GC or FF because I don't allow them to be stupid... well I think one or two use Opera, but I can excuse them for that.
I don't think you have to be more than the average user to dislike forced upgrades. I think the notion that Microsoft isn't giving you a choice in the matter is enough to make anyone dislike it.
Yeah I told my dad that and he said no I love IE6 I don't think I want to mess up my computer. I told him well dad guess what Google chrome is much better and faster. hell I tried to tell him why don't you try a mac and he freaked out telling me to keep the computer stuff to myself.
It's about time Microsoft did this, IE6 badly needs to be killed off. It was good in its day but it's time to retire it now.
