I so admire the way you live, I have always fantasized about living in the "old days" but am afraid that I am too deep into the electric world. I just found you today, and I am seriously in LOVE with your lifestyle! May God continually bless your family! In HIS love,
Wow what a blessing! Thank you so much for showing all of us your home. You said you have a horse. Do you use it for travel or just for fun? I also have 3 horses that function in different ways. 1 work the ground 2 travel 3 just plain old pleasure. You said you have 1 arc, so on that arc are you able to grow all your veggies for the year. I’m wondering cuz we are looking for land and our big quotation now is how many Acers. Blessings and the Joy of our Lord be with you. ;)
This is so great to see. My husband and I bought 13 acres and are starting a small farm. We will be totally off grid. We are going all organic and I have always cooked. I have watched this several times and dream of my place. You have inspired me. God Bless you and your family.
@DaughterofYesu Thank you for kind words that "we have inspired you". You have no idea how encouraging to us that is! Congrats on your land! That is so wonderful! God bless! The Winans
The kitchen is beautfiul. LOoks something out of a historical re-enactment.. . Where did you find most of your kitchen wares? 2nd hand? or is some from like LEhmans?
@Caelidh Thank you for your wonderful comment! And for taking time to watch our channel! Most of our kitchen ware/utensils were gleaned from backyard antique sales (aka garage sales), others attics or basements, most of our furniture was gotten the same way or made by my husband. A few of the kitchen utensils were gotten from antique stores and a few from area Amish stores.
Your kitchen is a dream kitchen for many of us who dream of going back to the self sufficient lifestyle and for those who love the beauty of the old and the history. I would love to have a kitchen like this or even smaller with less. I can dream and will save your video to watch often. Thank you!
@shirleykendrick1951 Thank you so much for your comment! I would have responded sooner but we have a bug going on with youtube and our emails with not notifying us of all comments. Thank you again for watching and taking time to comment! Blessings: The Winans
@uoffendme Yep you nailed it on the head! When we started this way back in the mid to late 90's it was without a doubt cheaper. But as prices have risen it's tit for tat now. So as far as lighting is concerned it's simply a matter of preference. We are investigating grease lamps as a supplement. We could reduce could reduce the number of oil lamps but we could use shared lighting, oil lamps and grease lamps, and see a savings.
do you ever worry about fire?. Thats the only main thing I get squeamish about.. I like the lamplight.. but are there any tricks you employe to be careful?
@Caelidh Yes you do have to be careful but you have to be careful even with electricity. We don't use table lamps on something that would be easy to tip over or areas that the lamps might get hit by an arm or animal. With children, we use a lot of wall lamps for safety. We don't go to sleep with the lamps lit. We just try to stay observant of what's going on around and if something maybe a risk. I think life in general requires a lot of obsersavtion for saftey it just becomes second nature.
This looks sooooooooo cozy! I have been trying to convince my husband to live like this for so long now. It may be a lil more work but families generally work together better when they have to! Thank you for sharing with us. I would like it if you would film how you use the stove and show me your tub on wheels. TX again. Deborahannah
@Deborahannah1 Thank you so much for! We certainly can do a vid on using the stove! Just to clarify when you say "show your tub on wheels" do you mean in the sitting up positions? This life style does make a family work together, if you are in one mind and one accord it does bring fabulous unity! In our home everyone knows that we all have a part and we can't do it without each other. It makes us see ourselves as needed and the work isn't a drudgery because of that. Blessings: The Winans
@heahak That is a very interesting question. We have never been asked that by homeschoolers before. We have had folks out that have just been interested in seeing how we live and share what info we can around our supper table but other than that I guess I can't say we've ever "hosted" anyone. We are willing to talk to anyone who is interested though in simplifying their lives and connecting with lost arts. It is a beautiful way of life and one that needs to be shared! Blessings! The Winans
I love your kitchen! It is beautiful and reminds me of what I still have in my storage unit. I need to my things down to Texas so I can use them again. My mother-in-law got me involved with antiques, but she also taught be something important, that the antiques really were made to be used for a lifetime, and I continue to use my antiques in my life. Thank you so much for your videos and I hope you continue to make more. It's nice to see other like minded fold out there.
@danzak44 Thank you so much for watching and taking time to leave an encouraging word! We too agree it's nice to see and hear from other like minded people! Blessings! The Winans
I may only be 26 years old,but I can still remember living with my great grandma, my grandparents and mom and dad in a little 3 room house and seeing many of the same things you have. I can remember watching granddaddy light up the lamps everymorning, and how much i used to giggle when they used the coffee perkolator. I loved this video, and the history that most folks seem to take for granted. Thanks for making this video, if nothing else at least it shows how important family really was!
@woohog1 Wow! That is so incredible to hear such a "youngster" :) having memories like that! Both my husband and I wish we would have been raised that way but sense we weren't the best we can do is raise our children that way and pray they have fond lasting memories as you do! Thank you so much for watching and taking time to leave such wonderful comment! Blessings to you! The Winans
@Duallight27 Thank you so much for taking time to watch our channel and leaving a comment! It is appreciated it! It is so nice to find others that appreciate things of the past and things natural. Somehow those 2 so easily go together. We are working harder than ever right now to become more natural in our home, it can be very difficult living in a modern world but it is rewarding and we do really love it!
I'll keep my opinion regarding most codes to myself. Regardless of the depth of the well, I'd think a deep-well hand pump in the house would work. It remains hidden, and there's always the option of flipping the switch when nosey neighbors come knocking. Because I have two children, ages 10 and 11, I "have" to have electric, as well as running water. Hmmm. We run to the well and get it and we run back again. As far as the electric, a 3' by 4' solar panel and 8 marine batteries take care of that.
You're exremely fortunate to have such fine artisans/craftsmen in your home. For my children and I it began as a game, lighting the lamps and building a fire in the stove. When the electric lights came on, our game ended. We decided together that we enjoy the "game" much better. One thing lead to another. Our "game" has become a way of life. And through this, we are truly living. Are you on a well system with electric pump?
@silverjinglebobspur1 You are correct, this way of life is truly living! I wish our house was totally void of electric but it's not. Once a house is wired it's much harder to go totally non electric than if it had never been wired. Example, yes we have an electric well pump in our house. Code in our area forbids handpumps. We'd have one in a minute if we could. That is truly our Achille's Heel when we loose power. We are fine with everything else, heat, light, cooking etc but not water.
@BeardsRFun Thanks for taking time to leave such a nice comment! It is appreciated. By the way, I love your screen name "BeardsRFun"! Thats great! Thanks again.
@aptharsia just wanted to share one more thing about your comment, My husband said you paid him a great compliment because truly they were going for the "old farm table" look. You made his day! Thanks again for your comment!
Trisha, I enjoyed getting your message and so happy you are enjoying our feeble attempts at these videos, its all so new to us! Sounds like we do have a lot in common! Blessings!
I have so enjoyed your videos! When I saw the frozen bottles in your icebox, I knew we had much in common, lol! I'm not blessed with an ice box (we use a cooler) but when we gave away our fridge 2 yrs. ago,we didn't miss it a bit,and you're right, less waste! We bought a smaller, more energy efficient freezer, and that's how we, too, make our ice bottles. We use as little electricity as possible, too! God bless you, from one home school mom to another (finished, lol). Blessings in Christ, Trisha
