These are my favorite episodes of spiderman I grew up watching these when i was growing up, and when they showed up on dvd I simply had to by the whole 1967 season!!
Reminds me of Crazygon, Ultraseven's car-eating mecha monster, hmmm maybe this episode was inspired by that episode: "A Battle of Bravery"(?). Come to think of it. This was my one of my favorite Spidey episodes because 1. I like robots and 2. The robot was very funny looking at it's "facial" exprations and Spidey's wisecracks :-D
The metal-eating robot in this episode is suspiciously similar to the robot in Ted Hughes' 1960's novel The Iron Man (probably better known in animated form as The Iron Giant)
Although i liked this episode it was entertaining, it was maybe the silliest of season 1. the monster had no origin or purpose, it kind of looks like an over grown washing machine.
Yeah, even when I first watched this as a kid, I thought the same thing. This robot would have been a great Dr. Doom or Dr. Octopus creation. Or, even Dr. Smythe, the one who built the robot that Jamison controlled to catch Spiderman.

The one thing that bothered me about this episode that the metal beast was never explained. It happens to appear in NY out of the blue.

how come he took the picture in central park but it looks like it was shot near buildings?

Too bad the episode didn't explain where the metal-eating giant robot came from.
