  • Sounds like super trucker syndrome to me.

  • 550 or 475 hp's?

  • After spending so much money and time.. and it was only bad fuel. Fuck thats a kick in the teeth aye!

  • well is that correct about 47000 going on 48000 hmm warranty is what am thinking next have you had the truck checked with a cat et a true et reader they can hook up and set a recorder to check several different things see what takes a dump hmm will it do it with the cruise control on more when hot or cold or just does it all the time grounds grounds grounds they can make you go crazy

at all rpms and gears ? not info best and always check the little things fittings and fuel pressure

  • acted like you turned the ignition off, then turned it back on Seems like a ignition circuit problem

  • It is ignition relay behind left instrument panel. It will give varying problems from intermittent low voltage to complete failure.

  • Speed sensor on the tranny

  • Maybe a Arenoid on the fuel pump.

  • I think it could be where the harness plugs into the ecm either moisture got past the seal and caused corrosion on the terminal plug Have you wiggled those sitting still with engine ideling

  • @truckertwotimes i would say buddy you are bang one with your thought !!! there is a fuse in the ecm harness that will cut power to the main start power that in turn will shut down what i am seeing here , and if this has been rewired mmm ))) i have seen these fuses and relay in main ecm cause much gray hair !!)))

  • yeah it sounds like an issue withe the fuel system.

  • I love how Cat engines just loaf along the hwy. 1250 rpm@60 mph

  • check all wire connection, if the EMC is not getting full voltage, when it calls for more power, it goes crazy cause of the fact theres not enough power

  • We have a chevy at work that has a cat c7 in it and it did that to us twice. it was the fuel pump

  • the driver ?

  • I would check the frame mounted circuit breaker. its located on the inside of the drivers side frame rail across from the starter. check for dirty or loose connections. also check the main cab ground its located on the drivers side next to the front left cab mount. with the engine running have someone watch your guages while you jiggle the wires at both of those locations. I would lean more to the frame circuit breaker. if you need a new one it is a 150 amp breaker. hope this helps.

  • i know what your problem is. ITS A CAT... lol jk im thinking its because you installed some lights and has to do something with that. happened to my classic when i installed some filter lights to it.

  • You might have wired your lights to some wire you never should have touched in the case! You should wire off your spare switches.

  • we fixed the problem already. it was some weird thing i forgot lol. but since i installed them, we put them on a spare switch.

  • Could be, Boost sensor, timing sensor, or earth, or power to the ecm, start eleminating

  • electrical problem somewhere could be frayed wires to the ecm or where it goes through the firewall

  • that would be acam positioning sensor for sure

  • cats have a shut down box on the fire wall on peterbilt's maybe that and bad fuel

  • that looks like a computer problem

  • its not the c-15's fault its an electrinic glitch

  • "its in american" mabye you should stick to sucking cock. catipilar engines are better than anything out there

  • Could be a lot of things, but i would suspect the buttom switch at the ignition

  • It's definitely an electronic glitch. I don't know enough about Pete's (I'm a Detroit Diesel engineer), but you dropped out power to the engine and the dash probably too. That would have caused the speedo to totally drop out too, even though you still had plenty of road speed. All the new electronics are nice, especially on the FTL Cascadia, but troubleshooting can be a bitch. But just wait til the get their Innovation Truck all put together and the electronics down pat (google it, at MATS)

  • looked like the engine shut down. might be electrical or .. somethings telling it to defuel and it shut down.

  • This is some sort of electronic fault. I work on marine engines, so I'm not too sure what to suggest on an automotive engine. There's a possibility that vibration has caused a wiring loom to rub against a sharp edge. Once the insulation has been broken its possible that the wires shorted. I had this happen to a Kubota engine. Perhaps that will help you... p.s. beautiful trim on the dash :)

  • I thought Cats never break down!

  • and my screen name isn't fixacat for no reason. I went to Penn College and I work at a CAT dealer as a tech.

  • o you too?i work at johnson in riverside.where you out of?

  • I rewired a C15 in school completely from scratch. Definitely check pin 70, for that matter do a wiggle test on all the wires while you are checking them. It can't hurt to check them all. That C15 had all the wires in the right places, but it was a nightmare trying to troubleshooting any electrical problems. ET wouldn't communicate with a certain part of the ECM, and a bunch of other funky things.

  • haha, i worked on one of those same 5 or 6 c-15's up at penn college, good project.

  • yup we had trouble with one of our pete service trucks did the same thing.was a bad connection.but the computer kept saying "bad loom".better the connector and not the $3500 loom

  • its your ECM mate, ive been building and troubleshooting mech and elect cat engines for nearly 20 years

  • If it is an 08' or newer it may be the emissions on it

  • Its a Pete, there can't possibly be anything wrong with it. Be glad you don't drive a freight shaker!

  • i think we had this same prob in my dads 2000 pete 379..had to take to the pete dealer to get it fixed it was also a computer problem.

  • looks like computer related like it just completely shut down maybe a short in wires

  • i'd say sum's wrong w/ur gages, get it checked out

  • I'd go along with what 351twinturbo says. Pin 70 is the switched power from oem side. It will be the bottom right pin on the right connector of the ecm.

  • Do you ever bother to check the coolant level, for Christ sake? Sensor for low coolant level will shut it down.

  • Just keep some fuel filters handy and when u buy them buy cat, had the same problem of power loss fuel filters got cloged and it was stalling on last gear would not reach high rpm up so switch it out will be like new

  • a relay or a sensor maybe faulty

  • Bad fuel will not make the cel, stop engine light come on ,and the speedo and tach gauges sweep. that is a ecm power fault, It could be the key switch to ecm or all time power/ground to ecm. I know, I have rewired these same trucks, and I work on CATS for a living.

  • I know what you mean, I dont understand neither, but I had replaced the key switch and rewired the power and ground that goes from the batteries to the ecm before... but honestly

  • the problem still remains until I run the truck until it almost got empty and refill with fresh diesel.

  • It is possible it maybe a relay or wire at the load center, they are bad about the yellow retainers falling out and the plug comming off relay or fuse. to eye when you remove a relay or fuse the terminal inside look to be normal but if wires are pulled on slightly it will side out. Try that.

  • It being a C15 that is a 70 pin ecm. On pin 70 of the OEM plug pin 70 is key switch power, if you tap into the wire NOT CUT, apply 12volts and retry, engine will not cut off until you removed wire from 12 volt sorce.

  • ****Problem Solve****

so after going thru all the mechanics they got in Jersey and spending tons of money on parts that got nothing to do with the problem, I finally found the main reason of the engine fail.....it was bad diesel... I drove my pete until the tanks is almost empty and went to fill up on one of the Sonocos gas station they got on the Jersey Turnpike and the problem never came back again, so I realize that the problem was cause by cheap fuel

  • hmm, ECM problem perhaps - almost seems like the engine computer shut down momentarily - laugh not - although it's apples and oranges I had a car with a faulty computer and the engine would do the same thing - replaced the computer and fixed - guaranteed to fix your problem - no, but it's something to have checked ... if it's fixed - what was the problem? The world wants to know!! :-D

  • mabye the throttle position sensor

  • replaced!

  • When this happens does your throttle pedal become unresponsive as well? And has any of the ECMs logged any fault codes? This could be a short in the J1939 databus wires.

  • You need an exorcist, its possessed.

  • My freightliner M2 witha C7 cat will do the same thing if i touch the dash while moving down the road. Mine actually shuts off and restarts itself. My truck has been an electrical nightmare from day 1.

  • You could check the accessory relay for loose wires etc. It powers up the dash, could be it cycled there. They do fail

    Tom the Peterbilt Partsman

  • woow thats really irrtating just too watch on the comp i bet thats driving u off the wall on the road tahtw ould deff get unde rmy skin if i wa sdriving and it just randomly did that

  • Have a Freightliner Argosy with a CAT that did the same. Problem turned out to be the data link that had a wire that was faulty. A good electrician will found the problem.

  • check power harness going out rear of battery box, peterbilts are famous for cables rubbing here

  • That was weird. It is a real shame Cat is leaving the tuck engine business next year.

  • Really? Why?

  • cat is tired of the epa bullshit but i have heard that they are teaming with IH to build a "caterpillar" on highway truck

  • I can't believe cat bailed out like that. I checked out the new Cat truck. Cat is just putting their decal on it. It does not even have a Cat engine. It is a Navistar Maxxforce built by MAN. What a shame.
