Buck Welcher, or Gunny Buck, was my Company Gunnery Sgt. in the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regement. One of the most decent and fair guys I'd ever met. Great sense of humor, and smart as hell. I remember taking him some homemade (made my my girlfriend) lasagna when he was in the hospital in Japan. He never forgave me for breaking up with her.
Wow . I used to work with Buck Welcher in Mosul, Iraq back in '06-'07 . Great guy to be around. He told me about his enjoyment of being a part of this film and how much of a badass D.I he was years ago. Now that Im into the acting game, it would be nice to catch up with him. Personal note to Buck , Thanks for showing me my first steps into the stock market Bro !
It was surreal being in the program when the movie came out. Great timing for me. The attention to detail was above average for a military theme film. The Navy should have let them do it in Pensacola. They wised up for Top Gun.
Gossett was good but far too kind! ha Mine, SSgt Castro, was an especially sadistic bastard. Back then, 1966, DI's still beat the crap out of us (thump call). Can't say it prepared us for Viet Nam, but then what could?
Gunny Buck was my NCOIC at AOCS, class 27-81. He had just come back from his work on the movie when I started. He was given a huge pair of sunglasses by his fellow DIs and given the nickname (never, ever uttered to his face by the cadets) "Hollywood Buck".
He was a good DI. He had an interesting sense of humor. I remember he had a guy doing push-ups and he got under him and stuck his tongue out underneath the guy's face as he went up and down while reciting his General Orders.
Yes but Marines train Navy officer candidates. On the enlisted side, I've always felt the Navy could benefit from incorporating at least some of the USMC program. That way enlisted sailor recruits can do more than just march around and fold laundry. All graduates of Great Lakes I've discussed it with tell me that's what it amounted to; an embarrassment and a shame b/c the time can really be put to better use. I like the Navy, but this movie is about many things, the USN being just one of them.
Memories of my youth and the Army-and my first love. :) Thanks for posting this! I'll have to go out and get this on dvd-my video's been long worn out.
GySgt Buck Welcher is a true professional and a gentleman of the highest caliber. However, do not misjudge his kindness as a sign of weakness.Because if you do, you would be better off sandpapering a Lion's ass in a phone booth than mess with Gunny Buck.

Jesus mother of god the last 10 seconds of audio (on my earphones) made me hit the deck. Sounded like the real thing. 300 per 10 feet off the deck.
