Since I shop out of necessity and not as a service to my fellow man, I shop at Wal-Mart because I can get more for less. Simple isn't it? I have a limited amount of money to spend and it makes sense for me personally to pay as little as I can get by with while also getting what I need. I can do that at Wal-Mart, but not at Whole Foods or the local health food store. The middle and upper class hate Wal-Mart for the kinds of people they think shop there. The "unwashed redneck masses".
This was a tough episode for me because I agree that Walmart is no good. I suppose the actual locations would have an effect on how you feel towards the place. The one I worked for was horribly managed etc. but that's beside the point. The point is it's true that they undermine smaller companies that have been in their trade for years and become very specialized in exchange for cheap junk from China. The Chinese workers are left overworked and underpaid far beyond reason.. Check it out.
Probably they change their mind if WalMart offers them a full time job so they dont have to peddle their ridiculous t shirts. They criticise greeters but, beautiful people this couple are not. And by their way of thinking, Peter Griffin and Homer Simpson, are geniuses in comparison.
I stocked shelves for a while; walmart appreciates honest hard fast work, paid higher than a few other stores, and accepted me on the spot. Good job, good management, low prices that's why its successful.
I came here from the Hel-Mart site because I'd watched the episode before and wanted to see if they had a rebuttal.
The site claims they were taken out of context for everything they'd said.
They really don't think much of other people. Why the hell would I want to listen to a pair of fucktards bitching about Wal-Mart when they can barely respect other people?
Have you all seen this piece of shit business the ugly guy and his husband made? It's illiterate, they don't know what they're talking about, and it really is an anti-Walmart marking scam(trying to get as big as Walmart by bashing Walmart). The irony: I haven't left the FIRST PAGE....>.>.....these people are retarded and anyone that came to a PENN AND TELLER video to BASH WALMART AND CAPITALISM, is just as retarded...
Is it true that Wal-Mart has a habit of hiring people and then letting them go after the 90 day trial period is over just to rehire the people again in order to avoid having to pay the benefits that comes with fulltime employment?
@TechnomancerMorhion Wouldn't work. When you hire people, they need to be showed around and typically spend the day working with another employee which basically means you're paying two people for the same job. Also, newbies are far less efficient than experienced workers which also would cut into whatever you were hoping to save. It's just too much hassle for too small a result and it's bad for PR on top of that
Not to mention you'd quickly get a reputation and then nobody would apply at all
@lordthawkeye Meant they'd rehire the same person they just 'let go', so no need to train them. That's what I heard anyway. I didn't know if it was true or not. It didn't make much sense to me, but I've met a lot of managment in my time that did things that didn't make much sense.
@TechnomancerMorhion Well, think about it. Would you work for a place that was deliberately going out of it's way to avoid paying you as much as the market would normally dictate?
@lordthawkeye My initial reaction would be no, but after the company I work for got busted a few years ago doing the exact same thing, I wouldn't put it past someone if they were hungry enough. Desperation and poor economic conditions causes people to accept situations they'd otherwise deny if things were better, especially if there's a serious lack of jobs available and they have children.
@TechnomancerMorhion If they are, that's typically a sign the company is not doing very well so you should probably look elsewhere for reliable employment anyway.
Just please don't be another of those idiots who takes one dumb thing one company did and declares all companies do it and that's why we need to give the state yet MORE power.
So this idiot is working at a copy shop (a business thats almost obsolete) more than likely making LESS than a walmart employee and this dumb ass is trashing them? Right...
Sure, these people are jackasses. But they have a point except in bashing Walmart employees.
You know I find it interesting that if Walmart was a country, it would be China's eighth largest trading partner. And yet, the same people who complain about outsourcing and foreigners "stealing American jobs" are the ones who buy the cheap plastic Chinese shit at Walmart.
@PowwowTime If you go to the Hel-Mart site (don't forget the dash, there is a helmart.com that's a legitimate retailer), you'll find out this is the Wal-Mart Supercenter in Chehalis, twenty-two miles from Cinebar. Maybe the handsome couple live in Cinebar.
Although the guys in this video are total jackasses, Wal-Mart is shit. It fucks over everyone. These idiots wit their t-shirts shouldn't blame the employees, they get the worst of it.

i hate how walmart basically ate smaller competitors, but it is too convenient to just pop into one of their mega stores and buy stuff, even if most of it's cheap shit. I don't buy produce there though, it's the crappiest of all the grocers in my area.
thank you everyone that shops wal-mart for putting millions of american manufacturing jobs out of work.i guess saving 25 cents on toilet paper is worth putting americans out of work.
@cassidy99ful Its called competition if you can't take the heat get out of the kitchen. If a shop sells goods for cheap then why the hell would I spend more money at another store because Wal-mart is "evil".
@lancedance2 Its the idea that Walmart sends our jobs over seas. They have poorly made items being made in china and Walmart can charge cheaper because the labor is cheaper over there. What I have a problem with is cheap material. I'll go to walmart for something small, but if I want something made of quality i'll shop elsewhere or go online. Although if your looking to save, online is sometimes a better route depending on what it is.
Thank the union bosses that have driven American wages up while they voted Democratic and stole the dues from the workers. I buy what is the best for the least. You want to compete?.......then fucking compete.
1) The government (federal and several states) is a major investor of theirs, according to the CAFR-1 comprehensive annual financial report.
2) They prohibit political speech on their property, including ballot access nominating petitions. (Even with no table set up, even respecting people's personal space, even without it blocking the doors, etc...) If my freedom of interpersonal speech doesn't follow me onto Wal-Mart property, fuck them.
Don't like penn and teller on this one....they get idiots who hate wal-mart who cannot actually reason out why they hate it....get real economists and local businesses and ask them whatthey think....and whats up with penn yelling at these two idiots......penn obviously doesnt like how wal-mart employees are underpaid...he just contradicted himself
Although I am a Wal-Mart shopper(and greatly respect their employee's that are just trying to earn an honest living to feed their family's), I really dislike Wal-Mart's corporate culture, they cheat their employees when ever possible, make an obscene mark up(and profit) off third world labor, and the Walton family are very self absorbed and hardly if ever donate to any charities. Sam Walton ran the company much more fairly that it is today, and he cared about people, not just his bottom line.
@rickbar123 I just picked up on tidbits of the orientation video that Wal-Mart showed (when I had a job there before going to college), and really didn't pay attention to the video except when it showed something interesting.
I don't like Wal-Mart(though I admit I shop there), but I certainly would never judge the people that work there. These people are trying to earn an honest days pay and these people are sitting there making fun of them.
When u buy shit at walmart it puts the local stores out of business because they cant compete with the low prices then when all the local stores are gone they can dictae the prices and screw the consumer
What do u mean so what? Are u a MORON? Do u live lala land? People like u are the reason this world is going to crap! I bet u never graduated high school
You lose the bet, I not only graduated high school, but managed 1 semester of college. the world is going to crap because Government has overstepped it's bounds. chasing bussiness overseas with ruinous taxation. A reckless tort policy which encourages frivolous lawsuits that drive up costs in every sector of the economy. so Blaming a store for the troubles of this country is very silly.
...continued. Once learning that you don't get benefits for an entire year (and it used to be 2 years) I then understood why they didn't require a doctors notice. How can you require a doctor's notice from employees when you don't give them medical benefits! Still...in the orientation they try to make negatives sound like a positive.
Your employer shouldnt be responsible for your health, you are. Its your life you need to face that fact. Second, why dont you ask your employer to pay for your car to? O yea its not there responsiblity either. What about the Mortgage. O yea get the picture.
@Bigturns33 Your employer shouldn't be responsible for health..true. But they provide health benefits as incentive to work for them, just like they provide pay. Some companies even do pay for vehicles. Mortgage, car, health...all paid for by your JOB (through waves). I'm not sure what point you are trying to make. My point was that Wal-marts benefit package does not stack up well with the rest of the retail industry. "O yea get the picture".
My point is, if an employer can pay for those things, Its there right to do so. The fact that walmarts benefit package doesnt stack up to other retail industry's, well... Go be productive enough to be part of those. You are making it sound like they owe you something. All they owe you is a wage for your work, if its not what you think it should be... leave and its as simple as that, if you boycott and enough leave well then you will see wage increase this is how it works.
In their orientation, they mentioned that they do not require a doctors note for absences extending beyond 3 days. In the same orientation... They BOASTED that they recently reduced the time it took for a part time employee to acquire benefits by HALF. Having just learned that it was a FULL YEAR before you received benefits as a part time employee I raised my hand and asked "Are you telling me it used to be 2 years before you got benefits?" Her answer "Yes".
Those Walmart critics are the worst kind of hypocrite. On the one hand they claim to defend the common man while insulting his dignity with the other. Scumbags.
haxanthrobo....Exactly, they like to present themselves as envelop pushing comedians, but most of the time they push, it is in defense of powerful business interest who couldn't convincingly pull off that kind of PR by themselves. P&T and many libertarians that I know support liberty when it comes to the government, but support an unaccountable managerial tyranny in the workplace just as long as the company is private. Those T-shirt pushers are obviously ass holes, that's why P&T shows them.
Comparing Wal-Mart employees to Nazis? Pfff yeah, THAT'S rational...
And if Wal-Mart is SO damn bad, start a competing business next door. The MARKET will decide which store is better. If you can't offer lower prices, think of something else you CAN offer. If that doesn't work, then your business is not as good.
I've seen the full episode and I have to to say that Penn Jillette has a habit of interviewing the most irrational people to represent the opposition while interviewing professionals and academic scholars to represent the cause that he believes in. To demonize the UFCW as greedy while conveniently glossing over the bloated salaries of the company bosses who slash employees hours, deny benefits, and intimidate workers for trying to unionize reveals his 1 sided biased arguments for what they are.
This is one of the issues they're clearly wrong about. There was a documentary about the damage wal-mart has done. This episode of Bullshit is proof that just cause you're an atheist doesn't mean you know better than everyone who isn't.
They didn't do a good job. No one can make an excuse for the money Wal-mart has stolen from people and the money they owe those people and the EPA and others who fined them. And you can read about those fines on the EPA's website.
Since when are raises handed out based on intelligence -- or even promotions for that matter? I've worked at Wal-Mart (Sam's Club, specifically), and I have known many perfectly intelligent people who have been employed there as well. In fact, these are the sorts of self-righteous morons who make our lives miserable. From the way they spoke, it would appear they haven't worked a day in their life. I don't think I'm the first person to say that they need a lesson in empathy.
for all the dumbfucks who hate walmart i say fuck you. its not like a sweatshop in there, these people CHOOSE to work there. and it makes small businesses work harder so YOU dont have to spend the extra fuckin dollar!
Walmart is great for consumers who are'nt rich. They have good products at reasonable prices. The Walmart super stores came into my community and their superior stock, service and price forced our local businesses to improve their prices and performaces. The result---the consumer wins.
Wal-Mart is a social cancer that should be cut and irradiated from society - much like these two gigantic douchebags. Not only are they smug and ugly as fuck, they are also making profit thanks to Wal-Mart, by selling their gay little shirts.
I don't want to be associated with these parasites.
@horsesflu agreed but these people are not helping your cause at all, there looking at stereo types not at facts of the walmart higher up society its not the workers faults
Fuck, man, I live 10 minutes from a new Wal-mart and it has greatly improved my life! I can get all sorts of electronics, food and uh... well I get my socks there but I don't usually wear Wal-mart clothing, but it's still awesome and some of the workers are pretty cool. Also these people have never worked a goddamned day in their fucking life.
@ScottThePepsi thank you for helping out the chinese economy and for putting american manufactures out of business. I guess saving 25 cents on toilet paper is worth destroying peoples way to make a living.
I don't like Walmart a lot but these to are a bunch of assholes. They should get a job, I'm sure those employees they were mocking make more than them.
fuck them i am an only child grew up in a stable home with good pay a great father a loving mother and i am fine and we shop at wall mart for almost everything i am in no way from a breeder family a hick family or a broke one these are obviously a couple looking for nothing else but something to bitch about i wish i could meet them face to face so i could tell them fuck you in person, thank you for reading my run on sentence haha.
the only thing that sucks ass about walmart is there is no "technical" support on anything, like at specialty shops, at least not at the one in my town. You ask them anything and they say: "I don't know, I can get somebody who does" then he comes "I couldn't tell you, you might have to look it up online"
Capitalists if you spend your life chasing the almighty dollar, and screwing over your neighbor every chance you get, (voting against unions etc..) then you can't complain when Walmart comes along and beats you at your own sick game.
I like walmart. It gives jobs. And it doesn't support unions. Unions are are the true leeches on society. They have good intentions, but they just don't work out in the long run.
Unions are no better than cartels which exploit the whole community for a small select group. The people who support unions are pretty retarded, since they are most eager to lap up the low prices business gives them. That is like hating your doctor for curing you of cancer.
Not to mention unions are a big reason for our corporatism of today.
walmart has done some shit. it has become so powerful it is able to not only put small businesses down, but also its suppliers if they do not meet its demands. so how should this be handled? the market is about competition. so you have to compete. wal mart should only be penalized for trampling on the rights of others.
walmart does offer the lowest prices for quality products. so everyone wins. walmart profits and consumers save.
They should have went over their argument before speaking about in on a t.v. show that will be broadcast. Not only did she insult everyone in her community by calling them white trash, Miss. Bowl Cut-Mullet does not seem so eloquent after shouting at Wal-Mart and giving it the finger like a couple of teenagers with bad attitudes. That, and their t-shirts literally made me not want to listen to anything they had to say. A bit of professionalism goes a long way towards people taking you seriously.

Callng people "breeders" how crude, I bet the guy only goes along with it because he doesn't want to have to look at the kind of babies that would come from her, and vice versa.
they are calling people rednecks breeders for shoping at a fucking stoor?
What the fuck, did anyone take note of how redneck and imbreed the two of them looked/spoke? some people cant aford to shop at smaller shops for specialty items so they go to wallmart and really your gonna pick on the elderly and people that couldnt get an education? I dont know who I hate more Walmart or the fucking holyer than thou eleatists that think they are above it .
Wow, people like this show me that most people that talk politics and business don't know what the fuck their talking about. Liberals are the dangers to our society.
Wow, looks like these people have not been in a Wal-Mart. Some of that stuff is hard work, which they are probably on Food stamps and do not know hard work., except when they have constipation and have to force our their crap!! Penn and Teller are both right, even though I do not agree with them all the time. Yah, why doesn't Teller talk?
yeah pretty funny that they mention wal mart peoepl work 40 hour a week guess what ..?NO union..cant even make barely enough to live on...these two people are stupdi BUt ...you should read the boook nickel and dimed.
Well the reason I don't shop at Wall-Mart (and I try not to shop at Target also) is that A.) When Wal-Mart moves in it drives buisness away from local "ma and pa" stores. B.) Their employee relations discourage any work groups or unions, and C) Their business strategy will inflate a supplier's output, then demand they lower supply costs. But to go after the employees is just putrid. People work there to make money and support their families, so seriously to insult them is putrid.
First people are complaining that Wal-Mart don't pay their employees enough, and that they do whatever they can to not do such (Welcome to the world of business, assholes)
Then they complain about people being given raises for "jobs that a monkey can do!"
Since I shop out of necessity and not as a service to my fellow man, I shop at Wal-Mart because I can get more for less. Simple isn't it? I have a limited amount of money to spend and it makes sense for me personally to pay as little as I can get by with while also getting what I need. @rickbar123 I just picked up on tidbits of the orientation video that Wal-Mart showed (when I had a job there before going to college), and really didn't pay attention to the video except when it showed something interesting.
neacej1 1 year ago
I don't like Wal-Mart(though I admit I shop there), but I certainly would never judge the people that work there. These people are trying to earn an honest days pay and these people are sitting there making fun of them.

When u buy shit at walmart it puts the local stores out of business because they cant compete with the low prices then when all the local stores are gone they can dictae the prices and screw the consumer

SO WHAT?

What do u mean so what? Are u a MORON? Do u live lala land? People like u are the reason this world is going to crap! I bet u never graduated high school
prodigyofsin333 1 year ago
You lose the bet, I not only graduated high school, but managed 1 semester of college. the world is going to crap because Government has overstepped it's bounds. chasing bussiness overseas with ruinous taxation. A reckless tort policy which encourages frivolous lawsuits that drive up costs in every sector of the economy. so Blaming a store for the troubles of this country is very silly.
kdraper2007 1 year ago
...continued. Once learning that you don't get benefits for an entire year (and it used to be 2 years) I then understood why they didn't require a doctors notice. How can you require a doctor's notice from employees when you don't give them medical benefits! Still...in the orientation they try to make negatives sound like a positive.
valiumsummer 2 years ago
Your employer shouldnt be responsible for your health, you are. Its your life you need to face that fact. Second, why dont you ask your employer to pay for your car to? O yea its not there responsiblity either. What about the Mortgage. O yea get the picture.
Bigturns33 1 year ago
@Bigturns33 Your employer shouldn't be responsible for health..true. But they provide health benefits as incentive to work for them, just like they provide pay. Some companies even do pay for vehicles. Mortgage, car, health...all paid for by your JOB (through waves). I'm not sure what point you are trying to make. My point was that Wal-marts benefit package does not stack up well with the rest of the retail industry. "O yea get the picture".
valiumsummer 1 year ago
My point is, if an employer can pay for those things, Its there right to do so. The fact that walmarts benefit package doesnt stack up to other retail industry's, well... Go be productive enough to be part of those. You are making it sound like they owe you something. All they owe you is a wage for your work, if its not what you think it should be... leave and its as simple as that, if you boycott and enough leave well then you will see wage increase this is how it works.
Bigturns33 1 year ago
@Bigturns33 My point was and still is. Wal-mart sucks as an employer.
valiumsummer 1 year ago
In their orientation, they mentioned that they do not require a doctors note for absences extending beyond 3 days. In the same orientation... They BOASTED that they recently reduced the time it took for a part time employee to acquire benefits by HALF. Having just learned that it was a FULL YEAR before you received benefits as a part time employee I raised my hand and asked "Are you telling me it used to be 2 years before you got benefits?" Her answer "Yes".

haxanthrobo....Exactly, they like to present themselves as envelop pushing comedians, but most of the time they push, it is in defense of powerful business interest who couldn't convincingly pull off that kind of PR by themselves.

P.S. I'm not religious

They Addressed that documentary and ran it into the ground
Ps360Facepunch 2 years ago
They didn't do a good job. No one can make an excuse for the money Wal-mart has stolen from people and the money they owe those people and the EPA and others who fined them. And you can read about those fines on the EPA's website.
TheAmazingRandall 2 years ago 3
Since when are raises handed out based on intelligence -- or even promotions for that matter? I've worked at Wal-Mart (Sam's Club, specifically), and I have known many perfectly intelligent people who have been employed there as well. In fact, these are the sorts of self-righteous morons who make our lives miserable. From the way they spoke, it would appear they haven't worked a day in their life. I don't think I'm the first person to say that they need a lesson in empathy.
funkystuf31 2 years ago 2

Walmart is great for consumers who are'nt rich. They have good products at reasonable prices. The Walmart super stores came into my community and their superior stock, service and price forced our local businesses to improve their prices and performaces. The result---the consumer wins.

the only thing that sucks ass about walmart is there is no "technical" support on anything, like at specialty shops, at least not at the one in my town. You ask them anything and they say: "I don't know, I can get somebody who does" then he comes "I couldn't tell you, you might have to look it up online"

Capitalists if you spend your life chasing the almighty dollar, and screwing over your neighbor every chance you get, (voting against unions etc..) then you can't complain when Walmart comes along and beats you at your own sick game.
badmuffy 2 years ago
I like walmart. It gives jobs. And it doesn't support unions. Unions are are the true leeches on society. They have good intentions, but they just don't work out in the long run.
foamy233 2 years ago 5
Unions are no better than cartels which exploit the whole community for a small select group. The people who support unions are pretty retarded, since they are most eager to lap up the low prices business gives them. That is like hating your doctor for curing you of cancer.
Not to mention unions are a big reason for our corporatism of today.
Offatwork 2 years ago
True; the idea of a union is great in some cases, however in most cases it just turns in to typical politics.
Arkethot 2 years ago
walmart has done some shit. it has become so powerful it is able to not only put small businesses down, but also its suppliers if they do not meet its demands. so how should this be handled? the market is about competition. so you have to compete. wal mart should only be penalized for trampling on the rights of others.
walmart does offer the lowest prices for quality products. so everyone wins. walmart profits and consumers save.
and there shouldn't be a subsidized union.

What the fuck are they hating it?
god.. wall-mart is the best mini mall in the world
WHAT IS THERE PROBLEM?
masterfox3000 3 years ago 3
i mean "market"
masterfox3000 3 years ago
Well the reason I don't shop at Wall-Mart (and I try not to shop at Target also) is that A.) When Wal-Mart moves in it drives buisness away from local "ma and pa" stores. B.) Their employee relations discourage any work groups or unions, and C) Their business strategy will inflate a supplier's output, then demand they lower supply costs. But to go after the employees is just putrid. People work there to make money and support their families, so seriously to insult them is putrid.
