In all the interviews I've seen her do, she mentions this fear of having syphilis. Even in the seventies it wasn't considered that big of a deal. A shot or two of penicillin and you were fine. Not quite sure what the big deal is for her.
I listened to the audiobook version of her story and the big deal was that the syphilis was being passed down the family line. Maureen's grandmother contracted it from her Grandfather after getting it in WWI. Later, Maureen's mother found out she contracted it through her mother by birth. Maureen was scared she may have contracted it from her mom and that she would go crazy in the head the way her mom and grandmom did for they were put in institutions for it.
