in my eyes these folks are one of the rare bands who ever managed to make the lyrics reflect within the sound of the music itself rather by throwing in their talents into rough suitable structures than endlessy composing songs and building over the top constructions. I don't think they got the respects they would have deserved. but nevertheless i am glad that they played in the eraly nineties. if they did that nowadays i am quite unsure if I would ever hear of them and thses great tunes.
way way waaay ahead of their time, so fucking awesome, still my number one band of all time! fucking awesome, just so fucking awesome! shit! WHAT'S THE BEST FOR MEEEE????
dude are all you guys comparing deftones to helmet????apples to oranges....holy crap... different styles of rock. deftones paid tribute to helmet ;being skaters listening to helmet when they were jammin in a garage! helmet are pioneers of rock in their own right as are the deftones. but helmet came first thats all..in my opinion, the deftones are deeper artistically and melodically. lets admit, page wasnt the best singer....but he was friggin hardcore! no helmet=a different deftones
Technically, deftones and Helmet started around the same time, in 1989. Helmet just found mainstream success and recognition long before deftones did.
@80selectro Chino and Stephen both have stated that without Helmet, they wouldn't be what they are. In 1989 Helmet was hard, and doing original material... Deftones were not doing either at that time.
@magneteye deftones started writing songs for the first two demo tapes in '89, I believe. You're right, they weren't 'hard' at the time in comparison to Helmet, but I'm not sure what that has to do with the two bands forming around the same time.
If you think the deftones version is better, which its not of course. Find "sinatra live" found on the limited betty LP that was only released in europe. F'in incredible! Even the deftones would laugh at you if you said their version was better, tha version or any helmet sinatra version for that matter. I have all he limited betty live tracks if anyone wants them.
personally i prefer the detones version. tho i don't see why people can't compare versions without turning it into a fucking shit talking match. both bands kick ass nboth versions are cool so why not just enjoy them?
and for all the Deftones comments, the Deftones did a respectable version, and it was supposed to be homage to the greatness that is Helmet, not a measure of skill between the bands :)
First off, you cant compare the Deftones and Helmet, because one is a great classic band, that started this type of hardcore rock(post punk), and the other one, well lets face it, the Deftones fucken suck to these guys... ALSO: THIS IS WHEN THEY OPENED FOR NIRVANA during the summer of 92.
@def2sleep they are both great bands, 2 of the most influential bands in modern rock history for sure. Deftones are my favorite band, i've jammed them for 14 years now, but at least show some respect to Helmet for paving the way.
@def2sleep youre a fucking joke of a deftones fan. have some respect you fucking ignorant cunt, i even like the tones version more, but they wouldnt be playing it if helmet didnt first would they?
Adrenaline (Deftones) sounds just as much like Helmet as it does Faith No More.

I was factually wrong in my other comment, deftones formed BEFORE Helmet in 1988.

I agree with Dauragon. I just think the Deftones "sound" is better. Chino masters the song......

A lot of seriously underrated bands opened for Nirvana; Sunny Day Real Estate, Helmet, Godflesh, Beasts Of Burbon...
