Thank you so much i am an amateur at this, and your tips helped to much! After searching for hours and hours this is the best video i have seen! Thankyou!!!! And p.s. could you by chance make a video on maybe how to make an action movie with special effects
I agree with you. I-ve just made a long feature using available resources. A tip: get the best sound and camera gear possible! To check out the results I'm getting making no budget movies just click on my you tube name and check out my channel! cheers
I agree that you don't need a fortune to start making movies. With a bit of ingenuity you can produce fantastic effects with very little equipment - In fact I have just put up a video showing how to make videos even if you haven't got a camera! - Most of what you need is probably already there.
@MissBelleBrune Shows like "Criminal Minds" use famous quotes in every episode...But I do not know the legalities of doing so. If a quote is in the public domain however, you can definitely use it as you wish. You can even print books, copy movies and even sell public domain stuff. Fair use may come into play when using licensed works but you should investigate this before doing anything to damage your work.
I agree with you, the cost of my first film was around 70$. Just one actor (my familiar), camera Sony DSC-W55, an old tripod and a few things wich I buy special for film. You want to see it? (sorry for my english=)
lol i and my friend are making a movie now. we are 2 "actors" and 1 camera, and in the movie there is 4 persons, and thats really hard to make a movie with 4 persons in it and only 2 "actors"
I made my first film when i was 17. it had my freinds in it and to place around the neighborhood. though i meant for it to be a drama originally it ended up more of a comedy. but as cheesy as it was i wouldnt trade that footage for anything, though i still wouldnt consider myself good i wouldnt be anything if i hadnt started somewhere.
@richardlee467 Thats part of the fun in film-making...When we film even serious scenes then watch with our families, we all crack up laughing...Its funny I suppose to see each other acting...Yes, those films of yours will be treasured and watched by future generations...If I ever make a real film I want to add my earliest works to the DVD as a cool extra...
Hey man, I really appreciated your video. It was like the pep talk I needed to get out there and get my ass started on something this coming summer. Great ideas. Too bad we weren't neighbors, man. I can already tell we'd have lots in common. Thanks for sharing this video. Truly appreciated.
@LastPatriotStanding Glad the video helped...I myself need a push or pep talk every so often, I spend much more time thinking and planning than actually filming...Good luck on your project and please tell me when its done, I want to see.
@stonedcommander Will do, man. I just got a new Canon DSLR and a few lenses, alongside a tripod and other stuff. I'll make sure you get to see the final bro. I gotta subscribe to your channel. Great stuff.
Really good advice. You come off as genuine, someone who really enjoys making movies, and experienced. I don't see a lot of that from the filmmakers on youtube.
@ninojaquez Wikipedia has a good breakdown of this topic...plus other sites too offer free advice...Just work within your means...Write a script containing locations and people you can use for free...Forget a pawn shop...look in stores...Great deals on brand new cameras, with warranties...you want reliability. If you did not even write a script yet then whats the rush? Finish the script then worry about a camera.
@ninojaquez Make sure its a digital camera and it has charger, USB cable and any software it came with...I would recommend buying a camera new, many deals now...I see HD cameras on sale for less than 75 bucks...Do you have editing software? Or just movie maker? I use Adobe now, cost like 100 bucks but worth every penny...multiple audio and video tracks, green screen and more...If you got people to be in it and help out, your on your way...only so much you can do alone.
Thanks commander, I found this very useful and encouraging. I have an idea for a psychological horror film, have written the first scene, need to work out how to create a ghost, or a ghostly effect. It's based on auto writing.
I found fake blood cheap to buy.
Re. taking an expensive camera into a rough area, don't stash it in a camera bag, stash it in a dirty battered old backpack or something.
I would like to thank you for the great videos about filmmaking you have uploaded on YouTube. I have always been interested in making movies but never had the confidence and skills to be able to create my own movies. At one point I almost gave up filmmaking but then I came across your video and been watching your tutorials I learned so much and have now made a movie. I am sending you the link so you can have a look at it and would appreciate any views you may have towards it.
@ssproductionscouk As you know i watched your trailer and am most impressed...looks like you made a real effort to do a project with important issues and poured your heart into it...I'm looking forward to watching whole film and best of luck to you...If i helped inspire you in any way i feel like a million bucks...thanks for letting me know that....Douglas

thanks for this video its very helpful i have made movies before and i have edited them and added soundtracks and i also got a straw filled it with flour and taped it to the side of my gun and when i shot i blew on it and flour came out immitating smoke most of the movies i made were war the effects were ok but the storyline was not so good we just made it as we went along i took about a day to make and it was 40 mins long but not very good i am now going to work on a new movie and plan it
one more question. my piont and shoot camera is my only camera that has color, but doesn't pick up all the footage i want. how can i make it shoot better?
@UrCarolinaGirl1 Do you mean like an analog camcorder? As long as your camera is capable of downloading the footage to a computer, you can use any camera...the better the camera, the better the footage...using regular video for film-making is possible but with editing software you can make it look more film-like...some cameras can film in different speeds,(FPS), so the footage looks like film.
@TheTrueSiperx Well if your peeps wont work for your project then maybe you shouldn't do it because it will look crumby...save that idea for when your able to
do it right...Maybe move on to a different project that suits them...There are some great channels on you-tube...check out filmriot...great advice and the videos are awesome...I love animation but i know nothing about it...there should be channels dedicated to it on here also.
this is a great video, a true realistic take on how you can film these days. Although i'm pretty young, the 3 years ive been making movies ive learned some of this the hard way as well as learning stuff now: through this video.
This video was great help, and gave me lots of good tips. me and a friend of mine, or both young aspiring filmmakers, and are making a old school style horror, very low budget, and these tips will be very useful. One quick question, is it a good idea to shoot on DV mini tapes? the camera we are looking at for our films use these, and i dont know very much about them, is it a good or bad idea? thanks
I love this video. It just sealed the deal on what I'm doing this summer. Making a movie. I dd the notebook thing and started to shoot it in November. It got too cold to shoot. But you just inspired me to keep trying
I also am planning a movie for over the summer...Right now im gathering and building props...contacting people to be in it,(the hardest part), and trying to get some free locations.
The notebook idea helps get me excited, you can see progress on the pages...hopefully it translates into reality.
Thanks for the tips, buddy. My biggest problem at the moment is that I have a very, very bad camera, and I don't have the money to buy a better one. I think I'll just have to what I can for now, and save the projects I care more about for a time when I have access to better equipment. Your tips have helped me figure out how I want to get started, and if rating was enabled for this video I'd give it a 5/5.
Loved your low budget movie tips. I am trying to put together a low budget production at the moment and have just uploaded an advert for a film I am making in the summer. Any tips or help you can give with regard to getting you tube views would be much appreciatted as I am totally new to this. Best Wishes Johnny
thanks! for posting this video ,you know i am working on making a film got a few ideas but as i talked to friends ,they kind of laugh considering its cost alot of money .and they think movie making is for rich people etc,. the point is the have kind of discouraging views of my filmmaking but i always beleived person should do what he has passion for. your video is great encouragement .
Sometimes when we see behind the scene footage from movie sets, it can be very discouraging...a hundred people standing all over, confusion...it feels as though its a daunting task and perhaps it is...but you can make a movie with just you, directing and doing the camera work...you can even get by with no lights...digital cameras pick up all available light...with film you must light because what you see through the view finder is not what you will get...digital, what you see is what you get.
i'm an aspiring film director who has just started planning videos. i actually loved the point where you said that its best not to make many youtube videos and invest time in feature length films.
hopefully i can post to you some films that i would have made in the near future.
I am going to make a movie following your instructions, so if you want to watch it just check out my channel, but you might want to subscribe because I don't know how long it will take
i feel make making movies is my calling. i always have made short movies and love to be in the spotlight, but i really want to make a legit movie. you have inspired me to get it together, thank you.
assuming your not paying them then you are at thier mercy...people act jazzed about your project than are nowhere to be found when your able to film...concentrate on and use those who wont let you down...in my case i use my family as much as possible, some friends too...cast way in advance and if you know someone is sketchy, try to get all thier scenes done in one day...again, use your most reliable actors for the biggest rolls...you cant depend on some people.hope this helped.
Yeah, exactly what I needed to know. I'm planning on making a movie set in ancient middle east (unknown exact time and place). I'm lucky enough to live near some beautiful mountains...the city is practically surrounded in high mountains. The movie is in pre-production, but I hope that it will be finished by this time next year.
i wouldent use just any sound effect i came across on the net but they sell public domain sound effects and if you buy one that says for use in your films than i guess its o.k...reade the fine print...and check e-bay and other sites...i bought a couple for less than 10 bucks.
I have a Canon HG10 camcorder, and have Sony Vegas as software with some effects on it, I might start filming a "Silent Hill" kind of movie with some friends, I just haven't found the right place, I need a kind of ghost town to do the shootings.
you can make an anthology movie like creepshow where its a movie made up of short films...do one at a time then string them together with a wrap-around story.see creepshow if you haven't.great.
Good call! Another great Romero project. One of my all-time favorites.
I was only about 5 or 6 years old when that finally hit cable TV. Every segment captivated me. Instead of being scary at that age I just thought it was cool.
My Dad, my brothers, and myself always laughed during 'the Crate' when the guy hits the monster w/ the monkey wrench and it just gets pissed off. Awesome movie.
that monster was called "fluffy" by the film crew...that was the best story in the film i think.the worst was the one with Stephen king playing the farmer...but the ending of that story saved it.the music in that film was perfect too...it fit the mood.
Honestly, I liked all of the stories. Maybe you're right about that one being the weakest one, but I still liked it. The little dream sequences with the overly vicious doctor-scientist guy. Since it was in the middle of the film I thought it lightened the mood for a bit. Maybe that was a negative for some people but I thought it worked well.
The soundtrack was perfect. The theme song alone is imprinted on my brain for life.
i think your right...the lightened mood did help set up the scarier scenes...i still have the album somewhere.i have some good soundtrack albums, ill do a video on them one day.
the notebook is a back to basics approach...when you list everyone and everything you can use for free...it pumps you up and some locations you have access to will mold your imagination.
This brings me back to my art school days in the late 90's. I had a few film classes and in one of them we had to make a short film. It was absolutely awful, but I remember going around Pittsburgh with a big clunky Panasonic AG series camera. Far from being inconspicuous. We were just students, and it was pretty obvious, so the police never gave us any hassle. It was fun though. Maybe someday I'll do something like you've suggested.
George Romero grew up near me in parkchester, then moved near you into Pittsburgh...you should do it...even if its just for fun...when we showed our families our films it felt like a premiere.
Awesome video Stoney. There were a lot of great ideas in here. I don't know if you know this, but I am trying to make short narrative films too. I'm favoriting this video!
wow...i did not know that...awesome...i bet if you put that mind of yours into it,you will make great films...even if our films aren't "movie theater" quality, there is still a market for direct to video films.
thank you very much. I am trying to learn to make short video films on my own. your tips are truly valuable.

Thanks and good luck to you.

Best Wishes Johnny

thanks! for posting this video ,you know i am working on making a film got a few ideas but as i talked to friends ,they kind of laugh considering its cost alot of money .and they think movie making is for rich people etc,. the point is the have kind of discouraging views of my filmmaking but i always beleived person should do what he has passion for. your video is great encouragement .
thanks a lot.

Thanks alot for your video,
i'm an aspiring film director who has just started planning videos. i actually loved the point where you said that its best not to make many youtube videos and invest time in feature length films.
hopefully i can post to you some films that i would have made in the near future.
Thanks alot

People keep dropping out of my movie, what can i do to keep things on schedual?
themonarch92 2 years ago
assuming your not paying them then you are at thier mercy...people act jazzed about your project than are nowhere to be found when your able to film...concentrate on and use those who wont let you down...in my case i use my family as much as possible, some friends too...cast way in advance and if you know someone is sketchy, try to get all thier scenes done in one day...again, use your most reliable actors for the biggest rolls...you cant depend on some people.hope this helped.

Wow! Thank you so much for the advice. I am so overwhelmed with trying to make a horror movie. This has helped me out a lot! : ) Thanks again.

Yeah, exactly what I needed to know. I'm planning on making a movie set in ancient middle east (unknown exact time and place). I'm lucky enough to live near some beautiful mountains...the city is practically surrounded in high mountains. The movie is in pre-production, but I hope that it will be finished by this time next year.

hey I'm filming my horror in a supposedly haunted wood Kingley Vale, I was wondering if using sound effects off the internet was legal. Thanks
mrmansanimations 2 years ago
i wouldent use just any sound effect i came across on the net but they sell public domain sound effects and if you buy one that says for use in your films than i guess its o.k...reade the fine print...and check e-bay and other sites...i bought a couple for less than 10 bucks.

I have a Canon HG10 camcorder, and have Sony Vegas as software with some effects on it, I might start filming a "Silent Hill" kind of movie with some friends, I just haven't found the right place, I need a kind of ghost town to do the shootings.

Great advice. I am not sure if I have it in me to make a 90 minute film right now, but I think I will work on a short film instead.
thedefendingchamp 2 years ago
you can make an anthology movie like creepshow where its a movie made up of short films...do one at a time then string them together with a wrap-around story.see creepshow if you haven't.great.

Hockeygod98 2 years ago
that monster was called "fluffy" by the film crew...that was the best story in the film i think.the worst was the one with Stephen king playing the farmer...but the ending of that story saved it.the music in that film was perfect too...it fit the mood.
stonedcommander 2 years ago
Fluffy? That's hilarious :) I didn't know that.
Hockeygod98 2 years ago
i think your right...the lightened mood did help set up the scarier scenes...i still have the album somewhere.i have some good soundtrack albums, ill do a video on them one day.

Love the notebook approach. YouTube is kind of my practice room right now, but eventually I'll take off the training wheels. Great vid man. :)
alacazam 2 years ago
the notebook is a back to basics approach...when you list everyone and everything you can use for free...it pumps you up and some locations you have access to will mold your imagination.

Good video.
Hockeygod98 2 years ago
George Romero grew up near me in parkchester, then moved near you into Pittsburgh...you should do it...even if its just for fun...when we showed our families our films it felt like a premiere.
stonedcommander 2 years ago
Awesome video Stoney. There were a lot of great ideas in here. I don't know if you know this, but I am trying to make short narrative films too. I'm favoriting this video!
h8uall66 2 years ago
wow...i did not know that...awesome...i bet if you put that mind of yours into it,you will make great films...even if our films aren't "movie theater" quality, there is still a market for direct to video films.
