I LOVE this song much, it's just fantastic, every time I listen to "Dinner with Gershwin" I feel like I'm back in the glorious 80's, this song has that magic & wonderful atmosphere about it, SUPERB xXx
DAMN!!!....this sound is so timeless!!...wish we could produce this today....but at least we can remember it when music was 'real' and not manufactured like a 'pop factory!!'...
@acallender58 Unfortunately you're absolutely right!...This is an 80's Pop/Soul/R&B gem and ironically, I must add, very much alike to american Pop/R&B of the time! It's really sad because this type of situation still happens nowadays! I don't know why but americans seem to discard their own real black music foundation culture!...:-(

I saw an interview with Donna Summer when she was promoting this song.... The interviewer asked her which Gershwin she wanted to have dinner with. By the confused look on her face, it was obvious that not only did she NOT know their names....She didn't even know they were two brothers - George & Ira.
Sometimes stars have to reinvent themselves and this is a classic example of how it can work to best effect, not her usual thing but great song, arrangement, and performance probably the best move she ever made.
I tend to agree, but the song itself is pretty good, the problem is the arrangement. If you hear the song sung by the woman who wrote it (the talented Brenda Russell) you'll hear what I mean. Summer is not good at funk.
she might not be all that good at funk...but if u listen to this song... youll kind ofagree that it sounds a little like some disco...i think disci is what brought out the 80's sound...but i love this song too much
Donna Summer looks like my ex girl friend watching this video makes me think of her i wanna cry it makes me think of how much i miss her and realize that she is the only one for me in my life

God this is awful!!! Donna's biggest blunder was this album. It tanked as did her career, until she went back to her roots in 1989 with Another Place and Time.
there's a segment in this song that i've always hated and think totally destroyed whatever potential this song had as hit for donna. it's the part that sounds similar to when pac man is eaten by the ghost (sorry that's the best way i can describe it). it works great in the arcade game but totally destroyed this song. whenever i hear that part it makes me wince.
great song written by brenda russell. Have to say that Brenda's version is better. It has more of a funky sound to it. But I do like Donna's version as well. Met her in brentwood, tennessee a couple of years back where I used to work. Nice woman!
Aaaaaah! 1987! Reminds me of my stint in the army in a very different South Africa - and, of course, my first boyfriend from that time! I am now filled with grief-stricken nostalgia!

Very beautiful, very unusual song. Just discovered it while looking through her discography; it deserved to be a much bigger hit than it was!
