Awesome vid. I remember watching the original Bill and Hercules production about 500 times into the early hours of the morning, then going out to load ag planes for the day. Good times
Great video reminds me of the days I had the bonus of sitting in the back seat of a Thrush and later on an AT602 on the last runs of a days work, as a glider pilot I always enjpyed the chance to sit in on aerial spray ops.
Appart from a chemical distribution licence, an agricultral rating and a commercial, what endorsement do you need to be able to undertake night spraying?
Went first solo this week. I like those steep turns at low alt. (I only get to do that on emergency landing practice!!) This really shows what flyings about. I feel like I'm "back up there" when I see this one. Good one, boys!
@nikthepilot LOL. WTF. Planes, especially ones like these doing a job like this aren't like cars!!!! You don't just jump in and go or make it up as you go along. You wouldn't even be able to start the engine.
@mrbushpilot i dont like how you say "YOU wouldn't even be able to start the engine" If i can start the engine of a prop. ( Pretty much every Prop.) i dont think it would be a problem... lol
@nikthepilot i flew crop dusters for a season and yes you do need a license, if your spraying your own farm you only need a PPL. If you plan on doing it for other farms for money then you must have CPL
Im born in the american heart land and have always lived hear and love it, no im liveing in dallas and hate it. Thanks for the vid reminds me of home.
@evanccsmith and a shitload more dangerous :P wish i didnt give this up to fly commercially, my brain fogged when i heard the word embraer, airbus, boeing
@poskyflyer Not really. Some of the paddocks over are bigger than a lot of farms. They're laser leveled and don't have any obstacles in them. No trees, power lines, sheds, etc. One paddock being sprayed right now for instance is around 6500 hectares/16000 acres.
@evanccsmith when i did it in Saskatchewan we had the end of the field then right after a power line then a road just over the road were houses so we had to fly under the power lines and pull back hard to avoid the houses lol it was awesome
@evanccsmith also the temperature of the day normally when this was filmed is 35-45 degrees C so the water/chemical evaporates before hitting the crop. egronomists give the company a set temp to spray between, so generally thats at night.
also to other guys, the work lights on these aircraft are bright buggers
Wow! Nice footage but I have to ask, why would you take a high risk job like aerial application and add more risk by doing it at night!? Is the risk worth the reward? Can't get it all done during daylight hours or what?
Great Video. Must be real nice to have large fields. Got to love the Air Tractors. I noticed a Garrett in the Thrush. How do you like it as compared to the PT-6s. We have alot of Thrushs in our area as we are only 40 miles from the plant in Albany, Ga. where they are made. I prefer the application speed of the Air Tractors though. We still have alot of turbine Ag Cats to handle the smaller fields.
I got to refuel a Turbine and Radial Air Tractor today at the airport and it was the highlight of my day. First airplane I've ever fueled, where I had to stand on the front landing gear to reach the gas tank.
Best ag flying video ive seen. I am very interested in becoming an ag pilot, I live in Central Queensland and frequently see cropdusters. I am only 16 but I was wondering what licenses and ratings are required to start ag flying. Ive got a recreational pilots license and am going on to private and commercial licences later. Roughly how many hours are required to start? Thanks,
this footage was filmed in the St George area in Queensland Australia. One of the biggest cotton farms in the southern hemisphere or perhaps the world known as cubbie station is where some of the filming took place.
Greatest ag flying video on youtube....Well done guys! You have captured "IT"! Spraying for 13 years now here in the US, I love it. When spring rolls around, I get excited still. I've always wanted to go to Australia, anyone looking for a good pilot?
At 64 I stood on the road and took clips of crop dusting and posted it here. But yours is very cool, just love it and I love the music. Your video was very exciting, loved it, I could feel the wind on the wings, great video, thanks!
GREAT VIDEO!!! I am employeed by Air Tractor and work in the final assembly dept. Been doing it for 12 years and still love it. Sometimes we get to go for rides with the test pilots and man is it the the sweetest part of the whole job. Best Ag Plane and Fire Bombers on the planet. We have some pretty interesting things going on at the factory. STAY TUNED!!!
Its going pretty good. They want it to fly to the NAAA show in Vegas this November if that tells you how hard we are working on it. We are putting in some overtime, but I just don't know if it will be enough. Maybe I can get some photos soon and if you give me you email I can send them. Have you not heard of the new 802? Now that is going to be something.
@codybill1 best water bomber is by far the bombardier CL-215/415 you cant compete with it, the airtractor is one of the most fun aircraft i have flown though
Get a ag rating, jones air i think do it or in toowoomba most have a min 500 hours for both insurance plus its a turbine job lots of people go for it. Some though like Jones have some 206/210s that you can cut your teeth on and build some time.
i live by a field and one of these crop dusting planes when down in front of my house and it scared the heck out of me i thought he was going to crash and it was so loud!!!
@evanccsmith Me either. My family has also been crop dusting since the 40's. My grandfather used to be M&M's chief pilot. Leland Snow and my him were partners at one time!! They were the first to ever put liquid out. Pioneers of the day.
Great video! Here in Delaware the fields are much smaller so doubles are unheard of, so those shots were spectacular. What was the song being played? Kudos to the pilots and the videographers.
Getting a spot landing every time on a moving, pitching thousand foot platform when all you can see is the outline of the carrier and the ILS landing system with a 12 foot margin of error and the possibility of dying if you mess up bad.... and your flying a 40 thousand pound and 30 million dollar aircraft.... Crop dusting might be intense... especially at night but carrier pilots.... wow...
Carrier pilots don't fly from dawn-till whenever ( day after day). Half of that time at 2 feet. The other half less than 200 hundred..By the way, the ground doesn't care how much you weigh or the cost of the A/C, it will still kill you the same, it does not discriminate. Great video guys

god you guys have an AWSOME job! wow! I'd imagine you need a commercial license to do this as a job but in the 2 seaters would it be possible to do some work experience with a PPL?
Sorry bud, you need commercial certificate with high performance and tail wheel endorsement. Plus a commercial applicators license for the state your spraying in (EPA kinda stuff) you also have to remember its hard to find a pilot to work with you, every pound counts acres and these guys are generaly pretty busy. They always have 10 fields that need sprayed at the same time and they dont catch up untill the seasons over. You could get lucky though, it happens.
After World War II my Grandfather "dusted" several areas around Klamath Falls, Orgon

Are these planes built in Australia? And what the avg speed of spraying with these planes.
Some go 120-140mph. But I was thinking 85 knots would be typical.
Skippy585 1 year ago
@Skippy585 Na mate they're Air Tractors, built in America. The AT802 will work between 130-160 knots.
evanccsmith 1 year ago
@evanccsmith
Ok so what the minimum airspeed for crop dusting?
Skippy585 1 year ago
@evanccsmith
130 Knots, so that about 150 MPH.

god you guys have an AWSOME job!

Bloody good pilots! My old man has worked with Field Air loading these babies, dad just loves these planes.
