Very cool demo, thanks! I always knew (well, since taking a Combustion class) that hydrogen has a very fast flame speed, but there's nothing like seeing it in action to hammer home the idea.
What is Thunderf00t's point with this video? Usually he makes videos to prove religious people wrong, so i and just wondering what the purpose of this video is. If anyone can place it in some kind of contest for me, then i'd be happy
And people wonder if we can get a motor to run on 100% hydrogen/air mixture from water. Looks like I need to complete my gaseous hydrogen injected 2-stroke engine modified from a 4-stroke. Just when I thought I had some spare time. ;-)
@ZeroFossilFuel you could save time Z and use a small 50cc-199cc wankal rotary engine from a go-kart (2nd hands from AU$200ish) and use a factory gas injection system from a car harvested at the wreckers. I dont know about the US but we can harvest such SVI (sequential vapour injection) lpg systems from new model cars such as FOrd falcon/futuras or Holden/GM Commodores including injectors, lines, tank and mappable fuel/timing computer from AU$800.
@antjam666 Producing hydrogen gas from electrolysis is 50-70% efficient. You then compress the hydrogen gas to very high pressures put it into a storage tank using a considerable amount of energy. The fuel cell converts hydrogen gas back into electricity at an efficiency of ~30-60%, with the higher end being attained only at a lab-bench scale. The engine converts electricity to forward motion at ~80-90% efficiency. Round trip efficiency is ~12-38%.
Burning hydrogen does not produce CO2 or any other pollutants. The only substance released is water. Therefore, hydrogen is a "green" fuel does not create greenhouse gasses and does not contribute to global warming. Hydrogen can be generated by electrolysis of water. If the electricity used to break down the water molecules is produced by solar or wind power; the hydrogen cycle is clean.
@alJizzerror What nonsense. Hydrogen is a very dirty fuel, if it is to be regarded as a fuel at all.
Wind and solar can't even compete in production of electricity; there's another factor ~3 handicap in favour of fossil fuels when you're making hydrogen; because all you have to do is steam reforming which is cheap and easy.
If you're advocating hydrogen fuel cells you're advocating for coal and natural gas.
So? There are lots of ways to store electrical energy without releasing CO2. It just so happens that hydrogen is a particularly inefficient, costly and dangerous way to do it.
So? There are lots of ways to store electrical energy without releasing CO2. It just so happens that hydrogen is a particularly inefficient, costly and dangerous way to do it.
@soylentgreenb no, i read what you said and understood it perfectly well, what i meant was how can anyone be that fucking stupid? and the fact you didnt grasp that furthers the proof of your stupidity.
@Spartan09786 Your inability to point out any substantial error that I have made is rather telling. If you had anything interesting to say I don't believe you'd behave as a petulant child.
@soylentgreenb then use geo thermal energy which is unlimited and very powerful, expensive to first create but since it never runs out its cheaper then the long run. But no one ever cares about 100 years from now so the cheapest thing is usually used.
@highflyer4 Enhanced geothermal is problematic for a whole slew of reasons. Drilling costs increase much faster than linear with depth; it's not economically viable to drill 10 km wells for oil(which is much more energy dense) it's going to be even less viable to drill 10 km for hot rocks. EGS is not going to be viable across more than a few percent of the earth's surface, where you can get away with drilling only a couple of km, for any forseeable future.
@highflyer4 You have to redrill geothermal wells every once in a while to get rid of the crud that crystalizes in the pipe. Individual heat reservoirs run dry in a couple of decades due to low thermal conductivity of rock so you have to keep drilling new geothermal wells. Since the amount of power that comes per unit volume pumped is about 50 times less than for oil you have to maintain crazy rates of drilling in perpetuity.
@alJizzerror Again, wind and solar cannot even compete with straigth electrical generation.
It is much more efficient to convert fossil fuels to hydrogen than it is to convert fossil fuels to electricity; this puts wind and solar at an even greater disadvantage. Arguing for hydrogen is arguing for fossil fuels.
@alJizzerror using hydrogen to power our daily lives is a waste of time, for one solar/wind power is not even close to 100% effeciency and given that, if we use energy to make energy, to use energy how could we keep up with the growing demand for energy?
@shaneomac210 It's an education channel, yes. Not just for highschoolers though.
I'm a college grad now, and I enjoy watching Thunderfoot, and other educational science-related videos on youtube, to make up for where public science education failed me.
If it wasnt for Youtube channels like this, I fear I'd be rather ignorant.
Quite a big difference in the power of the hydrogen over the butane. The bottle shot away very fast with the hydrogen. Make a video of a home made rocket, if its legal where you are.
Good chemistry. Did you make the hydrogen gas yourself from oxidizing some metal in an acid? I made about 220mL of hydrogen gas that way once with Zinc and hydrochloric acid, was tempted to ignite it when I was done but I didn't think the sealed flask would handle it lol.
@BaMenace That's what I thought at first but then I thought maybe Thunderf00t wants them to try using hydrogen, failing miserably and blowing themselves up.
Great video, but you made mistake of saying mot rockets are fueled with hydrogen. Some are, including the Saturn V, the Space Shuttle, the Delta 4, Ariane 5, and the J-IIB, but the majority of launchers, such as the Delta 2, Atlas 5, Falcon 9, Zenit, and the Soyuz, use a kerosene/LOX mixture, due to ease of handling. Also, the solid and hypergolic rockets are relatively common.
although this is coming from a society, voting mind you, that thinks singers, movie/tv stars and athletes needs million of dollars. whiles it's teachers, researchers and scientists make almost bunk.
Yep, without the space program we would never have the information technology systems that we all take for granted today. My only wish is that NASA would continue launching shuttles instead of using the Russian program. If new space technology markets are born I want them to be run in the United States.
I'd just like to point out that just under $19 billion of the 2010 Federal Budget goes to NASA, while just over $1 trillion goes to the welfare of the people in programs like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.
Excellent video. It leaves me thinking, however, that there has to be a better way of putting people into space besides igniting explosives beneath us...
I didn't think this would be anything exciting, but thank you for reminding me how how fun it is to watch theory in practice. Very fascinating about the space shuttle as well.
now we just need to know how to put that kind of power in my car, and the would would be happy, instead of the doomed electric car. The electric car is a dead end road and is impractical at this point of human society. If we can use hydrogen in cars and just find a way to make it safe, there would be minimal to no growing pains in such a transition.
@jacknocf unfortunately while the hydrogen cell would provide an environmentally friendly and efficient option, both cost and safety are a major concern. firstly, the cost of changing all the state's gas stations into "hydrogen fuel stations" would be astronomical, and the states will likely never have the finances to go through with such a project. As for the safety of passengers, a garbage can of hydrogen furl ignited could level half a high school, and a fuel tanks worth could be devastating
Social studies and knowledge about the world is more my thing when arguing with religious people but I really wish I knew as much as you about science.
the shuttles propulsion seems inefficient. I saw something on the science channel a while back about a new type of propulsion system they may have in the future. i dont remember what it was but it burnt blue and wasnt gas but electric i think. Anyone know what im thinking of?
@xeyon You're probably thinking of ion propulsion. While efficient it doesn't generate much thrust. They are planning on using it once a craft is well clear of the planet.
This reminds me so much of the old BBC Open University programs.
That's not anything to be ashamed of, either. I used to love staying up at night watching those things. I just wish I'd been slightly older and better able to understand them.
Then the OU went away and the best we could do for a while was the Christmas Lectures from the Royal Society, but the last one of those I saw had been dumbed down to the point of depressing futility, too. We underestimate our kids far too much :(
@TruthfulChristian temporaldisplacement made no claim of being "more righteous than God". He just showed that he was at least as knowledgeable about the Bible as you.
I think most of us here aren't too concerned about "getting saved." Personally, if it means I have to stop using my brain, quit enjoying life, and get mean-spirited, I'd rather pass.
@TruthfulChristian It is you. If he's wrong, just use science to prove him wrong. That is, if you understand science. However, if you've made it a life practice to hold all scientific knowledge in contempt, then of course it probably won't make any sense to you. We live in reality and purposeful ignorance does not make science false, no matter how many tantrums you pitch about it.
@TruthfulChristian You're kidding, right? You think igniting a few drops of hydrogen or butane is illegal? Have you used a grill lighter?
I suspect your negativity is a knee-jerk reaction to anything Thunderf00t does because he has so effectively exposed creationist falsehoods in his past videos. I mean, you didn't watch this video because you wanted to learn something, did you? Aren't you just trolling for something to bitch about?

the shuttles propulsion seems inefficient.

Nice - clear, straightforward, and with a touch of humor, just like in the "Creationists" and related videos. Keep it up!

Debunking religion is never shite!

Seriously, both are great, but I prefer some theist thrashing.

We live in reality and purposeful ignorance does not make science false, no matter how many tantrums you pitch about it.
ebullock43 1 year ago
@TruthfulChristian You're kidding, right? You think igniting a few drops of hydrogen or butane is illegal? Have you used a grill lighter?
I suspect your negativity is a knee-jerk reaction to anything Thunderf00t does because he has so effectively exposed creationist falsehoods in his past videos. I mean, you didn't watch this video because you wanted to learn something, did you? Aren't you just trolling for something to bitch about?
