I really liked the Marty Friedman years but IMHO Chris Poland was the best guitarist deth ever had, besides Dave himself. I have no idea why he left the deth but I honestly think the music suffered slightly because of it... they kind of lost that hardcore edge after "Peace Sells". That's the bad thing about music in general, lose one really great artist and the whole band is never the same again ...like Def Leppard or Mountain or Zeppelin.

@sweetbilly marty left basically to pursue in pop. he wasn't really even into metal. haven't you noticed that certain band members tastes in music affect the way the band plays? megadeth got a little more and more pop-ish in the 90's as time went by. poland and samuelson were jazz players, that's why megadeth had like a jazz feel to them in the early days.

But i disagree megadeth has mellowed out or become more pop, people's tastes have changed and gotten a little more progressive. Personally I haven't heard much of a change in megadeth's style through the years they just became more mainstream.
