Dumbass. The 2.5L/4.0L Jeep engines are legendary for hitting well over 250,000 miles with no problem. BMW reliability is actually worse than Chryser/Ford/GM cars if you read JDP&A and consumer reports.
The stock 4.7lt v8 just dosent do it for me rip it all out and fit a 500Hp chevy V8 and a stainless steel extractors and exhaust and u have a sweet Jeep the 4.7lt isnt all that exciting to be honest it just isnt
if you are making the same power as a 9000 rpm car with a 5500rpm car your doing it with more displacment or a blower. in any case lots of power = lots of gas.
how do u know its my mazda, its actually my dads car, i drive a 1999 honda civic si with turbonetics turbo kit, 3 inch skunk exhaust system, aem coldair intake, hks bov. and other aftermarket parts, i bought used as my first car, i wish i could make a video of it but my camera is broken.
my dad tunes the mazda, he traders his car in every time we move.(he is army all the way!!!) but i just turned 16 and i had a work permit for a year and made 6,000 dollars. i moved to new york , 10th mountain division fort drum and my dads friend sold me his 1999honda civic turbo my dad helped me pay. my insurance per month is about 220 a month. the car has 87,981 miles on it right now. give me ur email and i will send u pictures of it . in not kidding im being serious
and also when i lived in new york my mom tradered her toyota camery in for a 2007 toyota sienna le awd for my little bro. in 1993 when i was a baby my dad used to do some drag racing with his friends , they all had 5.0 mustangs, with
you don't need 7000, 8000,9000 rpms to have a fast car, if anything lower revving is better because less engine work, which means less fuel needed, less heat produced, and a lot more powerband.
I have an 01 4x4 4.7 liter, with the all wheel drive I'd say it gets to 60 in the low 7 range. It's insanely fast, are these engines underrated? I can even get 21mpg on the highway when I'm just cruising.
Guys, the only Jeep engine that takes premium is the 4.7L HO (High Output). And besides, you won't feel the difference, trust me, I've tried it for 2 years ...
The engine only gets a little more torquey and responsive ... for city driving, not worth it, only if you're travelling and need extra muscle on highway for passing or something.
And it's not like you're driving a Ferrari or something that would generate extra 100hp for taking premium ... (that's just an example)
lol ty, but i backed out of the 5.9 because it takes premium gas, dats like a double whammy on the bank, do you know if all the v8 jeeps take premium gas??
that's bull man, they take any kind of gas, trust me =D of course, the engine feels more powerful with premium, but for daily driving, you don't notice the difference.
with my 5.9 if i dont put premium gas in it i get preignition knocking and i notice a huge difference with the performance. i dont care about the price cause its worth the asswhooping i give everyone in races
Yes, the 5.9 needs premium. With its cam and higher compression a higher octane is NEEDED. Bigblockjeep59 knows what he's talking about, you don't. The only reason the 4.7HO will run on regular is because it has two knock sensors that will retard the timing for lower octanes. So yes, in some engines (4.7HO and 5.9 LTD) the type of gas makes a big difference and in the case of the 5.9, constantly getting preignition will destroy the engine.
As I said, the Ram 1500 5.9L I used to drive had it printed on the dash Unleaded, in the manual it specifically said 87. Now maybe they changed something from that model to these newer ones. None of that really matters now that they've discontinued the engine does it?
that's funny considering it's the same engine that was in the Dodge Ram 1500... that didn't only take "premium gas". In fact on the dash it said Unleaded only. So my guess would be 87 Octane is more than enough.
In a sense it's the same engine, but simply changing the cam alters the timing and can increase the compression ratio, thus requiring higher octane. Afterall, the 4.7 and 4.7HO are so much the same, but sooo much different.
Being a Jeep-addict, I know for a fact the 5.9 ZJ needs premium to run properly without preignition.
Really? I never tested with that button on and off to see the difference. I only thought it let the engine rev longer before making gearchanges, and not let overdrive on. =D
16 city, 18-20 highway ... if you only run short trips around town, you won't feel the weight of the "low" gas mileage on your pocket, but if you go across town to work (lots of miles) you might wanna get a V6. If you are a gas mileage freak, look for a 4 cyl.
yes, all limited models come with a 4.7L V8 standard, 5.7L V8 is optional. Overlands come with a 5.7L V8 standard. V6's are standard on Laredo models, 4.7L V8 is optional. =D still a great car ;)
reminds me of a commercial of a mustang filling up at the pump. He revvs it three times and then the egnine stalls and the gas light comes on... Nice jeep man. its quick!
I know that, but what I was trying to say is that a Jeep engine is not made for horsepower, it has 295ft/lb of torque but at 4100rpm, producing just about 235hp ... hundred more than the civic ... while having more than 2 times the torque of the civic ... people try to compare cars by horsepower, and I discourage that, I think engines should be compared by the torque they produce (fun factor) and then by the horsepower =D Imagine a Jeep with the same 300lb/ft at 7000rpm -> 400hp + same car ...
I had a jeep with 4.7 V8 and it did not really impress me. Only 235hp and 295tq. So I bought a lexus LS400 with 1ufze motor. Now 4.0 liters 290hp and 300tq alot better motor flatter torque band than 4.7 also.
Well, how much did you pay for the jeep and how much did you pay for the lexus? Money buys better technology ... put a double overhead camshaft (DOHC) and the jeep engine would produce much more horsepower and torque at higher rpms. But thats expensive technology to implement, especially on an 8 cilinder engine. =D got vids of your lexus' 0-60?
Honestly used Lexus are very inexpensive. I paid 11,000 in CA for a 1998 Flagship LS400 with DVD player, Navigation, 20" wheels, and sirius radio. It had 115,000 miles on it and ran like NEW. Lexus will last 300,000 miles easily. Sorry my video camera is broken so I dont have any vids, but look on the lexus website, 1998 LS400 0-60 is 6.4 seconds. Its not that fast but very impressive for a 3900lb four door sedan. Its funny to beat civics and see the look on their faces when they get smashed on
yea, i had a Lexus GS400. 300 HP, 310tq. that thing was pretty fast...in 98 they were said to be the worlds fastest sedan...i dont know how true that is, but it was fast..0-60 in 5.7 seconds, top speed of around 155 MPH, quater mile in 14.3 seconds...not bad for a 4100 lb car..lol...i really dont know why they were so much faster then the LS400 tho...only 10 more HP and 10 more tq. and weighs a little more then the LS too i believe. it was a little more rounded then the LS..maybe thats why?
Yea but can your Lexus climb up a sandy hill? If you are never going to go off road than there are better choices than a jeep. I cant think of any but I hear there are.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Just to make my point finally, it just seems most american cars seem underpowered in comparison to engine size. I saw a 5.7 Chevy engine with 350 BHP? God knows how, then you compare that to a Mitsubishi 2.0 (less than half the size of the chevy) with 405 BHP. Don't think the chevy would hit 0-60 in 3.5 seconds either! I make my point, big engines does not mean big power. Also i don't see many fast diesel engines in America, in europe some would say diesel has overtaken petrol in performance etc
You didn't understand. Big liter means more torque, not horsepower. Horsepower is made from high reving (rpms) and big engines don't rev much. And please don't compare big engines to that mitsubishi 2.0 liter. It has a huge turbo under the hood, that's cheating. Put a big turbo on that chevy and see it make 1000bhp. If you want to compare engines, look at torque, not horsepower. And I'm not taking pollution into consideration. I'm driving a VW 1.6 liter engine right now, and I hate it.
You don't get it, do you? Jeep engines are made for torque, not horsepower ... do your homework before you come post stupid things on the internet. You only make yourself look bad.
Yea but surely more BHP means more torque too? i'm sure an engine with 900 BHP is going to have more torque and pulling power than one of the same size with 235 BHP. Maybe i'm wrong, just seemed a like a huge engine with virtually no power. I would expect 235 BHP from a 1.8 or 2.0 litre maybe, but not a 4.7
A typical 2.0 liter engine has around 150hp ... not 235 ... at least not without a supercharger or a turbo. Try adding a supercharger or a turbo to a big liter engine and it will make around 500hp easily.
And no, torque and horsepower are not necessarily related. For example, a honda civic 1.8 liter engine has 140hp but only 128lb/ft of torque ... if you want more torque, the easiest and cheapest way is to make a big liter engine. If you want horsepower, you need variable valve timing technology, and that's expensive.
The downside is that usually a car that has small liter and lots of ponies will only have this power on high rpms, and that is really stressing and tiring in city traffic, as you have to rev up you engine a lot for it to run good. A big liter engine on the other hand, has a lot of torque on the low rpm range, and it becomes really comfortable for city driving, while having at the same time, comparable performance. =D
You're right in some aspects but changing subject slightly, i can't help but pick on your comment "A big liter engine on the other hand, has a lot of torque on the low rpm range, and it becomes really comfortable for city driving" this is logically very wrong and discouraged in my country! Small engines are for round town. If you have a jeep on our roads, you can pay up to $800 a year road tax where as i only pay $70 due to low emmisions. Big engines are more polluting obviously.

Dumbass. The 2.5L/4.0L Jeep engines are legendary for hitting well over 250,000 miles with no problem. BMW reliability is actually worse than Chryser/Ford/GM cars if you read JDP&A and consumer reports.

I have the 5.2l version. Its really fast car even though it is heavy.

who cares. it's a grand cherokee, not an srt-8.

if you are making the same power as a 9000 rpm car with a 5500rpm car your doing it with more displacment or a blower. in any case lots of power = lots of gas.

you don't need 7000, 8000,9000 rpms to have a fast car, if anything lower revving is better because less engine work, which means less fuel needed, less heat produced, and a lot more powerband.

i got a 1999 4.7 and ive beaten mustangs and i raced my friend with a 350 in his blazer and put him to shame

I have an 01 4x4 4.7 liter, with the all wheel drive I'd say it gets to 60 in the low 7 range. It's insanely fast, are these engines underrated? I can even get 21mpg on the highway when I'm just cruising.
mtb416 3 years ago
Its an 8 cylinder fellas, it probably makes more torque than HP, strong engine, and even stronger transmission.
SSSDiaz7 3 years ago
Should the RPM go that high?
DallasCowboyFan24 3 years ago
as long as it doesn't redline for too long. and the automatic transmissions shift the second the needle touches the redline.

Does the 4.0L I6 take Premium gas? I wanna try it. Will I notice a difference?
ZyVonic 3 years ago
Guys, the only Jeep engine that takes premium is the 4.7L HO (High Output). And besides, you won't feel the difference, trust me, I've tried it for 2 years ...
The engine only gets a little more torquey and responsive ... for city driving, not worth it, only if you're travelling and need extra muscle on highway for passing or something.
And it's not like you're driving a Ferrari or something that would generate extra 100hp for taking premium ... (that's just an example)
phsouzabr 3 years ago
I LOVE MY JEEP WJ!!! :)

lol ty, but i backed out of the 5.9 because it takes premium gas, dats like a double whammy on the bank, do you know if all the v8 jeeps take premium gas??
BIGR0B92 3 years ago
that's bull man, they take any kind of gas, trust me =D of course, the engine feels more powerful with premium, but for daily driving, you don't notice the difference.
phsouzabr 3 years ago
well i just bought a 98 cherokee 5.2l silver, its real nice
BIGR0B92 3 years ago
with my 5.9 if i dont put premium gas in it i get preignition knocking and i notice a huge difference with the performance. i dont care about the price cause its worth the asswhooping i give everyone in races
bigblockjeep59 3 years ago
oh god... asswhooping because of gas? I be you believe in the add-in Tornado too don't you?
Magnuspire 3 years ago 2
(I accidentally gave you a thumbs up)
Yes, the 5.9 needs premium. With its cam and higher compression a higher octane is NEEDED. Bigblockjeep59 knows what he's talking about, you don't. The only reason the 4.7HO will run on regular is because it has two knock sensors that will retard the timing for lower octanes. So yes, in some engines (4.7HO and 5.9 LTD) the type of gas makes a big difference and in the case of the 5.9, constantly getting preignition will destroy the engine.
ckarppi 3 years ago
As I said, the Ram 1500 5.9L I used to drive had it printed on the dash Unleaded, in the manual it specifically said 87. Now maybe they changed something from that model to these newer ones. None of that really matters now that they've discontinued the engine does it?
Magnuspire 3 years ago 2
that's funny considering it's the same engine that was in the Dodge Ram 1500... that didn't only take "premium gas". In fact on the dash it said Unleaded only. So my guess would be 87 Octane is more than enough.
Magnuspire 3 years ago
In a sense it's the same engine, but simply changing the cam alters the timing and can increase the compression ratio, thus requiring higher octane. Afterall, the 4.7 and 4.7HO are so much the same, but sooo much different.
Being a Jeep-addict, I know for a fact the 5.9 ZJ needs premium to run properly without preignition.
ckarppi 3 years ago
Point proven, I for some reason just couldn't take in the part about the cam. It's the same problem if I wanted to cam my little pickup.
Magnuspire 3 years ago
thats right

hey nice video im about to purchase a used 1998 cherokee 5.9L. do u have a custom exhaust on it? it sounds really good

I'm sure you'll love your 5.9L, they're really strong engines, and if you put a custom exaust + air intake, they sound awesome.
Thanks for the comment, mine is bone stock ;)
phsouzabr 3 years ago
why didnt u switch the d/0 off u would have better acceleration
bessniak 3 years ago
Really? I never tested with that button on and off to see the difference. I only thought it let the engine rev longer before making gearchanges, and not let overdrive on. =D

what kind of gas mileage do you get??? dont need something that gets to bad of gas mileage.
eeevvviiil 3 years ago
16 city, 18-20 highway ... if you only run short trips around town, you won't feel the weight of the "low" gas mileage on your pocket, but if you go across town to work (lots of miles) you might wanna get a V6. If you are a gas mileage freak, look for a 4 cyl.
phsouzabr 3 years ago
not bad. thought it would be worst. might be one of my vehicle choices.

MTenery14 3 years ago
15-16mpg city
18-20mpg highway
phsouzabr 3 years ago
hmm...not too bad...thanks a lot
MTenery14 3 years ago
I know that, but what I was trying to say is that a Jeep engine is not made for horsepower, it has 295ft/lb of torque but at 4100rpm, producing just about 235hp ... hundred more than the civic ... while having more than 2 times the torque of the civic ... people try to compare cars by horsepower, and I discourage that, I think engines should be compared by the torque they produce (fun factor) and then by the horsepower =D Imagine a Jeep with the same 300lb/ft at 7000rpm -> 400hp + same car ...
phsouzabr 3 years ago
I had a jeep with 4.7 V8 and it did not really impress me. Only 235hp and 295tq. So I bought a lexus LS400 with 1ufze motor. Now 4.0 liters 290hp and 300tq alot better motor flatter torque band than 4.7 also.
lexluthor400 3 years ago
Well, how much did you pay for the jeep and how much did you pay for the lexus? Money buys better technology ... put a double overhead camshaft (DOHC) and the jeep engine would produce much more horsepower and torque at higher rpms. But thats expensive technology to implement, especially on an 8 cilinder engine. =D got vids of your lexus' 0-60?
phsouzabr 3 years ago
Honestly used Lexus are very inexpensive. I paid 11,000 in CA for a 1998 Flagship LS400 with DVD player, Navigation, 20" wheels, and sirius radio. It had 115,000 miles on it and ran like NEW. Lexus will last 300,000 miles easily. Sorry my video camera is broken so I dont have any vids, but look on the lexus website, 1998 LS400 0-60 is 6.4 seconds. Its not that fast but very impressive for a 3900lb four door sedan. Its funny to beat civics and see the look on their faces when they get smashed on
lexluthor400 3 years ago
yea, i had a Lexus GS400. 300 HP, 310tq. that thing was pretty fast...in 98 they were said to be the worlds fastest sedan...i dont know how true that is, but it was fast..0-60 in 5.7 seconds, top speed of around 155 MPH, quater mile in 14.3 seconds...not bad for a 4100 lb car..lol...i really dont know why they were so much faster then the LS400 tho...only 10 more HP and 10 more tq. and weighs a little more then the LS too i believe. it was a little more rounded then the LS..maybe thats why?
4wheelingwook 3 years ago
Yea but can your Lexus climb up a sandy hill? If you are never going to go off road than there are better choices than a jeep. I cant think of any but I hear there are.
jbro74 3 years ago
And all he burned was 3 gallons of gas to get it to 60! That's awesome!

D41H4T5U 3 years ago
You didn't understand. Big liter means more torque, not horsepower. Horsepower is made from high reving (rpms) and big engines don't rev much. And please don't compare big engines to that mitsubishi 2.0 liter. It has a huge turbo under the hood, that's cheating. Put a big turbo on that chevy and see it make 1000bhp. If you want to compare engines, look at torque, not horsepower. And I'm not taking pollution into consideration. I'm driving a VW 1.6 liter engine right now, and I hate it.
phsouzabr 3 years ago
true. horsepower buys cars, torque wins the races
coolguy2500 3 years ago 5

WTF? Americans are supposed to be obsessed with power so how on earth do you only get 235BHP from a 4.7 litre! haha! thats impossible?!
I know a sweish car manufacturer that has the same size engine 4.7 but has nearly 900 BHP. I just don't get it...
D41H4T5U 3 years ago
You don't get it, do you? Jeep engines are made for torque, not horsepower ... do your homework before you come post stupid things on the internet. You only make yourself look bad.
phsouzabr 3 years ago
Yea but surely more BHP means more torque too? i'm sure an engine with 900 BHP is going to have more torque and pulling power than one of the same size with 235 BHP. Maybe i'm wrong, just seemed a like a huge engine with virtually no power. I would expect 235 BHP from a 1.8 or 2.0 litre maybe, but not a 4.7
D41H4T5U 3 years ago
A typical 2.0 liter engine has around 150hp ... not 235 ... at least not without a supercharger or a turbo. Try adding a supercharger or a turbo to a big liter engine and it will make around 500hp easily.
phsouzabr 3 years ago
And no, torque and horsepower are not necessarily related. For example, a honda civic 1.8 liter engine has 140hp but only 128lb/ft of torque ... if you want more torque, the easiest and cheapest way is to make a big liter engine. If you want horsepower, you need variable valve timing technology, and that's expensive.
phsouzabr 3 years ago
The downside is that usually a car that has small liter and lots of ponies will only have this power on high rpms, and that is really stressing and tiring in city traffic, as you have to rev up you engine a lot for it to run good. A big liter engine on the other hand, has a lot of torque on the low rpm range, and it becomes really comfortable for city driving, while having at the same time, comparable performance. =D
phsouzabr 3 years ago
You're right in some aspects but changing subject slightly, i can't help but pick on your comment "A big liter engine on the other hand, has a lot of torque on the low rpm range, and it becomes really comfortable for city driving" this is logically very wrong and discouraged in my country! Small engines are for round town. If you have a jeep on our roads, you can pay up to $800 a year road tax where as i only pay $70 due to low emmisions. Big engines are more polluting obviously.
D41H4T5U 3 years ago
Big engines are more manly obviously.
