  • both fantastic videos pal, great stretches, fantastic warm up for Shotokan too.. :D

  • bouncing during stretching leads to permanent damage and injury

  • Comment removed

  • dude they been training since wen they were little im sure they know alot more than u and all of us!

  • ya for dancing :D, i dont think he's training the same thing

  • I don;t think it's useful to be so doctrinaire about the supposedly right and wrong methods of stretching. There are a lot of different methods--static, dynamic, passive, pnf, resistance stretching, etc.--and they all can point to examples of people who've been very successful using that particular method. Obviously, the late sifu Martello's methods worked extremely well for him, because he had phenomenal flexibility.

  • if you bounce at all you create little tears in the muscle eventually causing them to rip, you go as far as you can hold it for 10 seconds and try going further, thats a safer way of streatching

  • Man, he died? He replied to a message I sent him on YouTube asking about stretching progression and he was so nice and seemed like a very patient teacher! RIP

  • I am one of Mike Martello laoshi's student, my teacher didn't die during training. People got it wrong. He died suddenly in the morning. Teacher Mike's body (whilst alive) and chi was in great shape, strong, agile and not stiff. When he hit you, it felt like being hit a car. We were all sure he would live over one hundred years old, that is how healthy he was. He was a generous and honest man. His teacher, grandmaster Wang is over 84 and still tossing young people around.

    RIP, Mike Laoshi.

  • DeKokke

    thanks for the detail.

sad to loose someone like mike because there are few out there like him.

it is now up to his students to carry the banner in his absence.

  • can anybody tell me how and when mike died

  • Mike passed away due to a heart failure. He had a rare heart disease, which could result in a sudden cardiac arrest, although those chances were very slim. During a private training, he didn't feel well and collapsed. His heart had stopped. The medics tried reviving him, but nothing helped.

We will miss him. He was an irreplaceable teacher and a great man.

  • Mike Martello is die... R.I.P.

  • Mike Martello is the man! He's the real deal. There are many people in the US that are venerated as "masters" and have no clue of body mechanics, breath, intention, alignment - nothing.

Laoshr Martello puts all these guys to shame.

  • Koryuhoka... Thank you for such a kind comment and compliment, but really I am not yet good at all... I have so much to train for myself, I always see room for improvements... And thats the best part, never ending training... thanks mikemartello

  • A Humble Pie... you're welcome!

There is always something new to learn but, you just "get it".

You have sought out the people who can teach you "truth" and not something that resembles truth.

  • jigga how

    jigga how

  • arbizm, haha, Zhege Hao !

  • hey mike really like the video. i have being training mantis for about a year i wuld like to streach the kua area more. i can put both palms on the floor with my knees straight should i be ok for this kind of advaned streaching thanks.

  • can this be done when you're not that flexible? are these for advanced practioners only? or can any newbie go for them?

  • Darth, I would suggest NOT for beginners... First the body must be prepared by basic stretching and lengthening of muscles and tendons (tendons barely stretch like muscles). Then Strengthening and agility are exercised... Be careful and train to live long... mikemartello

  • wow,,really impressive

  • thanks 4 the vid its very good and i LOVE IT

    thank you again

  • amazing! when are you coming to taipei and have a seminar, mr. martello?

  • Thank you!!!

  • Thanks a lot - its very smart !

  • it's an interesting vedeo..simple & afficient moves....thanks martello

  • I had seen bits and pieces of active qi gong and taught some but not a whole short form just for the kua, thanks. I like it builds up through three steps. The qin na I have been fortunate to have played with but those whirling spinning throws are quite nasty, your mannerisms bring me back to San Francisco, I had wondered on a few details and your hands say it all. Thank you very much.

  • thankyou Donw.. I am glad you are able to take something away to help your training...

    More vids coming soon... mikemartello

  • Hello Mr. Martello,

I would like to have some advices from you.

I'm 40 years old, and even if I can consider me in good shape, I got problem with leg elasticity and flexibility.

How can I do my best to reach good splits?

How many warm up before stretch?

How much is the right frequency?

    One time per day?

Please, help me. (Thank you very much)

    ((Great video!!!))

  • Thanks for a very informative video--I'm really in awe of your technique. I'd love to see the traps and throws that you use against kicks.

  • These exercises are fantastic. I'm so impressed with the body-mechanics/power-generation. Are they from Yue Jia lineage and if so what are the origins?

  • These exercises look good for loosing old age joints. I am stiff as a brick. I would like to come train on just those techniques alone.

  • tunder,

please you are welcome to come to the club. i will help as best as i can... mikemartello

  • Not good...first part of this, I saw the man extending his knee past the tip of his shoe, that's asking for damage. One of my sensei(s) are in the medical field, she said if you over-extend you'll get knee problems and I do...I got bad ones. -_-; Eh, whatever floats your boats.

  • Mike will probably correct me if I'm wrong, but that's only if you're supporting the weight with the knee, which he's not. There's a lot more going on there that you can't see, support from the pelvic girdle, suspension from the spine etc etc. In other words, its more than just a "stretch." That whole "dont put your knee past your foot" is only for beginners that don't know how to properly support the body yet.

  • upyu, you are correct, many just dont understand advanced body mechanics... Moreover these ideas are not for the beginner in msot cases, and need basic mechanics before working these ideas... always becareful in this kind of training! mike

  • you gotta have strong knees in order to do these... :-/

  • 34thshaolinstudent-

its funny you call those shaolin folk "notorious", which means well-known in a negative way. rather than "famous", which means well-known in a positive way.

  • hey i have that radio! (at about 2:45 in)

    awesome video btw...informative. thank you.

  • I do agree. With age, one loses flexibility. You will notice that quickly when you are over 40 of age...

  • my sifu is over 40 and he still got the splits... he is still very flexible

  • thats awesome are u able 2 post a novice stretching tape which will increase flexibility really quickly :D i would love it so much and im sure soooooooooooooo many others would appreciate it 2

  • yes when I have time I will make a basic stretch vid.

  • well i can now do the splits, only 1 way with my left leg 4ward i got it in about 2 weeks and have no idea how i go 2 do it that quickly because its taking my other leg ages hahaha

  • well there no right or wrong, everyone's different. if it feels right do it, if not don't

  • jsooi, I disagree, there are plety of wrong ways, and if one walks the path wrong without learning he has lost his way and worse most times they loose many years. A good teacher is the way, but where and how and time. I am still learning...peace

  • thats quite amazing, you move with great power

  • fkenjoi Thankyou... More to come...

  • @ LeonJaaLeonheart (That's not true) most masters encourage bouncing rythmically while streching - in fact it helps open up the legs quite rapidly and less painfully - breath out when bouncing down and in when going up. See the most notorious Shaolins Shi Yan Ming USA, Zhang Li Peng, Yan Xin and Yan Lei in the UK etc...

  • ....wow thats madd flexible haha looks good 2 good job

  • Hi Sifu Martello,

Thanks again for yet another fine video. It is my understanding that you demonstrate a "dynamic" stretch, different from the "passive" stretches most people are used to seeing. It is clear you have both flexibility and strength to allow your clean fluid chin na techniques to work. Great stuff, difficult to emulate, but I have seen my Chinese sifu do very similar exercises for years. You must have worked long and hard to get where you are, thanks for sharing what you have acquired.

  • Mr. Pleasure...

Thanks for your accute comment... Yes I have worked and still working on the dynamics... I am very happy you see the ideas I am trying to get across or show lets say... CMA for me is not about the fight, anymore lets say, but about really understanding ourselves... I will post more vids like this one coming in the future... Thanks for your support.... mike martello

  • The guy really shoudn't bounce when he's streching.I heard it could make you stiff instead of flexible.

  • Dude I guess you didn't read and watch this video to closely? The guy is mad flexible and look at his age!!! What he is showing is way advanced than just mere stretching... Obviously he is not stiff... And his demo of appz shows no stiffeness!!! Can you show better???

  • This is kind of oldfashion stretching! In the last years physiotherapy said that you "SHOULD" bounce for some type of stretching! (Not for all)

And it makes you definetly not stiff! It even did not hurt the muscles!

  • Great Stretching Vid
