It is a film defect. Lunar Orbiter used *film* that was developed chemically in the spacecraft and then scanned. As such, there is debris and chemical effects that show up all over the frame. If you look at the original wide-scale image, you can see little white bar-like defects all over the place, so this isn't anything new.

Black and white footage and photos are used by American spy drones over Iraq. The same is usually seen from fighter planes. They use black and white because the stark contrasts enhance the subject matter.

For example with Google Earth go on beaches of Sydney in Australia, 'zoom' and look carefully details, colors. And these images come from satellites (ex: Digital Globe). Digital Globe constellation is at 500 km from Earth (images : 2007).

Now compare with LRO images. Black and white, of course (2009). Try to see 'details'. LRO probe is at 50 km from the Moon. LRO program cost : 500 millions $ (people payed it in fact).

After the analyze, I think you'll think something's... strange.

i have looked at the pictures it is clearly a data error. These photos are built up they are not captured on film.

These images are on US NAVY site. There are clearly airbrushed spots on some of them. If you don't believe it, if you don't see it, it's not my problem. And we won't continue on this way during one year, will we ? We turn around for nothing.

I saw the photos that convinces people that there is an entire population of aliens living on the moon and mars all from a few odd photos. Why would NASA use colour on a grey moon? We have seen the Apollo photos. Nothing but grey.

Plus, In computing terminology, black-and-white is sometimes used to refer to a binary image consisting solely of pure black pixels and pure white pixels. It is called GREYSCALE.

Photos of the moon are not holiday snaps. They are sent back to earth as data that is then built up. Black and white helps with contrast.

This is why US drones use black and white often too.

It is not about what I am happy with, it is about what is best for the mission.

Greyscale... It's the word for 'no colors' for every US orbital Moon probes during decades. In 2009, colors are still a luxe for the Moon. What about quality ?

I don't talk about first probes sent in the 50's/60's, I talk about probes that cost - LRO for example - 500 MILLIONS U$D !!! And they don't find a few thousands $, or dozen of thousands $, to take the option 'colors'. And the quality is worst than images in the 60's/70's for military Earth probes.

No I did not! You have just weakened your argument. The 'face' in Cydonia region of Mars taken in 1976 by the Viking Orbiter looked a little like a face....a bit. Then in 2002 NASA's Mars Odyssey probe took another photo and it was clearly nothing more than a windswept hill. Then I have to ask, if everything has been airbrushed and covered up how do you know anything?

For your request, I've just used the 'snapshot' of the keyboard (for different pictures, different zooms) with windows reader, and the last zoom is done with the video software, but I didn't change anything, except the 'light' to see the contrast of the structure. But everything's there... I'd like to find another image of this place, but it's mission impossible ! If you look at the left near the structure, you can see a kind of 'T' building, with a sphere above.

I read your message again and I now understand the final sense of it. Sorry I didn't catch the real meaning at the 1st time. You say you could see something there but the pixels were not good enough on the downloaded photo. In fact when you go on the frame 5151, if you click on the image h1, this is about 0.5 MB (preview JPG). If you analyze this one (what I did at the beginning), indeed you cant see details (tell me if its because of that).

But down the page 5151 (with 4 images) there are 3 types of files. Preview, Print Resolution (2 MB) and USGS Raw (17 MB). I used the 2nd one. Why not the 3rd one ? With 17 MB oh yeah we could see mooore details !!! But as usually, for big size, the link doesnt work ^^

There are another similar spots on original photo - check on the left and right sides at the same level. Looks like it is some kind of defects on the photo. If to compare it with stones on same photo, it have too good sharpness. So probably this is just defects.

Sorry I don't see anything which looks like this, especially with that kind of 'architecture', and size. There's maybe a structure which is little bit similar, it's the famous 'castle' (all white too). And what do you mean by 'defects' ?

Defects are white scratches or dots or something on the same photo. There are many around, that's why I think this is one of them.
