Did you forget to remove the battery pack before installing the new hard drive? Also, you might have mentioned grounding yourself, such as touching a metal object to discharge excess static electricity. I've even heard that it's recommended that you remain grounded by keeping a pinky finger constantly touching something during the installation of Hard Drives, RAM, and other components that are sensitive to static charge.
