Am I to presume that we are only talking 60s 70s Dylan?, One way or the other the list is endliss I mean you could nearly put 7 or 8 tracks off "Blonde on Blonde" alone.
Not sure what all the clamer about "Mr Tambourine Man" great song but wouldn't make my top 10 or top 20 come to that and I've been listening to him since the mid 60's long time and he's helped cared me every step of the way
doesn't matter, which song you put on the list, it could be from any decade or year, Bob is always the best. Your list is really good. Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!
I always find it impossible to try to pick a top 10 for Bob Dylan as I never know where to begin. Whenever I see any top 10 or 20 list people pick for Dylan they always seem to be different and I couldn't really argue with any of them because he has so many masterpieces! I am a huge fan of Dylan although if he has had any flaws in his work it would have to be some of his 80's and early 90's work, but even those albums have included great songs!
Of coarse you had to leave off dozens or even hundreds of songs to get 10. Now, how about Shelter From the Storm, especially Hard Rain tour 1976, To Ramona, Hard Rain'a a gonna fall....
well, I clicked on this to think maybe I was being unfair in my opionion of this person, however, even the top ten favs of yours does not change my mind. He was a person who spoke his mind and changed a lot of people's points of view. He spoke in slurred speach without making a lot of sense most times and got booed a lot. Could be it was because he really couldn't sing. A great poet? yes, Singer, not for me. Monotone at best. Covers did his songs so much better. now you can call be names.
Good list, can't argue with #1 but I have a few favorites you omitted- Desolation Row, It Ain't Me Babe, Tambourine Man. With Dylan you could do his top 25 and #25 would be better than just about anyone else's #1.
good list, my list, although i love every single song as much as the other, these are probably my favs; 1. 4th Time Around 2. Positively 4th Street 3. Tangled Up In Blue 4. Dirge 5. Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again 6. Lily, Rosemary & The Jack Of Hearts 7. Isis 8. Visions Of Johanna 9. Po' Boy 10. As I Went Out One Morning
here is the problem i have with this list. you stayed in one particular era. a list like this should span the entire career of the artist- like adding "jokerman"
love all the choices tho here are mine in no particular order...1. simple twist of fate 2. shelter from the storm 3. like a rolling stone 4. its alright ma 5. when the ship comes in 6. a hard rains a gonna fall 7. visions of johanna 8. my back pages 9. dont think twice its alright 10. mr tambourine man
@sejlali1 What about Blind willie McTell & The Hurricane? You left these type of laments of all together. It would take me forever to decide on just 10. I commend RetroTopTen for doing so. Dylan with a catalog of over 500 songs 20-25 may be possible.
I can't really argue about your list, except I would have liked to see Forever Young squeezed in there somewhere. To really do Dylan justice, you would need a at least a top 20 list, IMO.
second even if i would try ten - i would probably only have two of yours songs in my top ten- the times they are a changing - and visions of joana - you missed so many of my gems
and third: like a rolling stone - its a great song all right - but for me its overrated - there i said it
tough to pick the top 10 dylan songs but heres my list:
10. it aint me babe 9. when the ship comes in 8. tangled up in blue 7. mr. tambourine man 6. dont think twice its alright 5. just like a woman 4. blowin in the wind 3. its all over now baby blue 2. the times they are a changin' 1. like a rolling stone
10. i dont believe you 9. song to woody 8.oh sister 7.lf not for you 6.its all over now baby blue 5.not dark yet 4.like a rolling stone 3.ballad of a thin man 2.visions of johanna 1.tangled up in blue
I'd definitely go along with 'Like a Rolling Stone', 'It's Alright Ma' and 'Visions of Johanna', but he did write after '66 you know. I also think 'Mister Tambourine Man' should be in.
there isnt a best dylan song, there is only favorites, every song is equally genius, just in a different way. list should be called favorite Dylan songs. but I agree with many on the list, my personal favorite is Its all over now baby blue. but where the hell was Mr Tambourine man?
I like your list, even though it's kinda heavy with older ballads. I especially like that you put Visions of Johanna up there. No argument at all with #1 and #2. You gotta seriously listen to Love and Theft.
@Retrotop10: I would totally agree w/ #1. But i think u may have forgot a couple. 'Shelter from the Storm', 'Lay Lady Lay', 'Hurricane' just to name a couple haha
How can you do a top 10 when it comes to Dylan? I hear a song and think, it just doesn't get better than this. Next time, a different song, same reaction. My "Top 10 list might just be a top 150 list. Just depends on my mood. For your consideration: Blind Willie McTell, Dirge, Tangled Up in Blue, Not Dark Yet. I could go on forever. He amazes me with his humanity.
Nice list, some great ones in there. I love It's All Over Now Baby Blue, it was good to see it high up. But for me no top 10 list would be complete without Changing Of the Guards, which I'd put at no. 1.
great list man!! but what about tangle up on blue? mr. tambourine man? desolation row? well I guess its all about personal opinion. thanks for the upload!
@effiebig dude why does everyone (and you) comment i'm 16 and i like Bob Dylan we get it you like good music that is way past you're time. Well done you want a medal of some kind or a trinket of our appreciation. It seems like you listen to it for a pat on the back not cause you like it. Just listen and spread it to the retards on this earth that listen to gay music don't ask for a pat on the back. btw the list is legit good work RetroTop10 :)
@AleksTapeZ No, i don't want a medal or a pat. It's just a remark that teenagers (some of of them at least) can appreciate quality in music and personalities that changed the history of music by their lyrics and music. Personnaly, i started listen to Bob Dyaln from the age of 14 and i felt so inspired by the lyrics of "Like a Rolling Stone" because i thought it could read my mind. I think Bob Dylan is a genius and even if i have tried to talk about him to my friends NONE of them can understand.
@effiebig algood man i respect you that you like good music. But next time don't put a number it seems as though your trying to hard. Saying something like the teenagers around me listen to shit music they should listen to bob. Putting the number next to it is like tooting your own horn instead of showing gratitude to good music.

What's the big deal with this guy?! He doesn't even have a singing voice. His sounds like a drunk on drugs who burned more than a few brain cells from LSD. And the people who like him...very likely a bunch of stoned hippies who sacrificed their remaining memory neurons to these awful songs(?)
@jan7145 well, your uninformed opinion isn't worth a bucket of shit. you are a clueless, vacuuous tool, who's never generated an original thought in your life. your immaturity is only exceeded by your flagrant ignorance in all matters. do the world a favor: stop breathing, you oxygen thief. gooo day sir.

@jan7145 You presumably came here to try and understand, for which you should be commended. I suggest you read about Medgar Evers on Wikipedia and then listen to only a pawn in their game. You might realise what an outstanding social commentator Dylan was. I can understand being put off by his voice, but personally I've come to love it. I don't think his songs would carry nearly as much weight if they were sung immaculately.
Great list...for me 1. Visions of Johanna 2. Tangled Up in Blue 3. Mr. Tambourine Man 4. Desolation Row 5. Simple Twist of Fate 6. Like a Rolling Stone 7. Idiot Wind 8. Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again 9. The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll 10. Love Minus Zero/No Limit
No Queen Jane Approximately??? I think that is a great song 1. Like A Rolling Stone 2. Visions of Johanna 3. Just Like a Woman 4. Queen Jane Aproximatley 5. Desolation Row 6. Mr. Tambourine Man 7. Girl From The North Country 8. Don't think twice, its all right 9. I Want You 10. Stuck inside of mobile with memphis blues again Theses are just my favorites
Like A Rolling Stone is such an overrated song, Dylan has wrote at least 100 songs that are better than it. Boot's of Spanish Leather should be on this list, as should Just Like A Woman.
Great list and I couldn't agree more with your number one choice, although personally for me, Visions of Johanna or Restless Farewell would be number two. And it's interesting that most of these songs are self reflection songs
I've always been somewhat impartial towards Ballad of a Thin Man and the whole Highway 61 Revisited album, for that matter. Nice that you (seem to) love Another Side, that's one of my favorite Dylan records and his overlooked masterpiece, IMO. He also has some terrific tunes from 70's and 80's, such as Every Grain of Sand and Hurricane.
Wonderful list! I agree, it must have been hard to choose just 10. Also, where did you find the picture of Bob smiling when Visions of Johanna is playing? I've been trying to find it for a while haha. Mine would be 1) Like A Rolling Stone 2) Visions of Johanna 3) Spanish Harlem Incident 4) Hurricane 5) Forever Young 6) Blowin' In the Wind 7) Isis 8) Only A Hobo 9) Bob Dylan's 115th Dream 10) either One Too Many Mornings or Desolation Row
Not Dark Yet has got to be in there. So has Motorpsycho Nitemare, Angelina, Tight Connection To My Heart, North Country Blues and and and and and and ....
1. Tangled up in blue 2. Masters of war 3. Like a rolling stone 4. Visions of Johanna 5. Positively 4th street 6. Lily Rosemary and the jack of hearts 7. Desolation row 8. The times they are a changing 9. Jokerman 10. Subterranean homesick blues
(no order) It's All Right Ma, Mr Tambourine Man, Ballad of a Thin Man, Visions of Johanna, Idiot Wind, Desolation Row, Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands, Like a Rolling Stone, Things Have Changed, My Back Pages, The Times They are a Changin' , Just Like A Women, Lay Lady Lay, As I Went Out One Morning, Sara, Shelter From the Storm, Blowin' in the Wind, Chimes of Freedom, Not Dark Yet, Tangled Up in Blue, 4th Time around, Love Minus Zero/No Limit, Don't Think Twice, The Man in Me, Hard Rain,
For me: 1. Like a Rolling Stone 2. It's Alright Ma 3. Idiot Wind 4. Subterranean Homesick Blues 5.Desolation Row 6.The Times They Are A Changin 7. Visions of Johanna 8. Possitivly 4th street 9.Tangled Up in Blue 10. Forever Young
1) Visions of Johanna 2) Shelter from the Storm 3) Love Minus Zero / No Limit 4) When the Ship Comes In 5) Desolation Row 6) 4th Time Around 7) I Shall Released 8) As I Went Out One Morning 9) The Girl From The North Country 10) Lily, Rosemary, and The Jack of Hearts
Great list, thanks for putting this together. My list would be. 1.Desolation Row, 2.Like A Rolling Stone, 3.Masters of War, 4.Idiot Wind, 5.Mama You Been On My Mind, 6.Visions Of Johanna, 7.Subtarannean Homesick Blues, 8.Highway 61 Revisited, 9.North Country Blues, 10.Dont Think Twice. But that will probably change. I am not including newer songs on the list as I think newer songs like Aint Talkin, Workingmans Blues,Standing In The Doorway could be classics as well.
It's sooo hard for me, and this is a conversation I have with my father all the time, but I THINK my top five goes like this 1. Visions 2. Sad-Eyed Lady 3. Desolation Row 4. Tambourine Man 5. Baby Blue 6. Chimes of Freedom, have no idea what the next five would be but I would be inclined to include It's Alright, Ma, Hard Rain's a Gonna Fall, Farewell Angelina, and Blind Willie McTell. but after those first 6 it is very very difficult and will probably be different tomorrow.
For me: 1. Desolation Row 2. It's Alright Ma 3. Like a Rolling Stone 4. Subterranean Homesick Blues 5. Mr. Tambourine Man 6. All Along the Watchtower 7. Chimes of Freedom 8. Don't Think Twice it's Alright 9. Hurricane 10. Farewell Angelina

No way can you distill a body of work this great to a "Top Ten".
Nice try, though . . . . !

And it's interesting that most of these songs are self reflection songs
jonathan1994ish1 1 year ago 2
@jonathan1994ish1 That's true! I really like when artists do self reflection songs and nobody does them like Bobby.

A "Top 10" is impossible.
Get serious, please.

I am not including newer songs on the list as I think newer songs like Aint Talkin, Workingmans Blues,Standing In The Doorway could be classics as well.
dylanhighway61 1 year ago
@dylanhighway61 Great list. Desolation Row almost made it in mine. You can tell a lot about someone by their favorite Dylan songs.

@dylanhighway61
