I've played Penumbra and Amnesia (both by the same developer). If you're thinking about getting them, definitely play Penumbra first. Overture wasn't great, but Black Plague was surprisingly good; it's worth playing Overture first just to keep with the Penumbra story. Amnesia is the scariest game I've ever played hands-down and should be played last, because playing Amnesia has made all other games significantly less scary for me. I just bought Scratches and am about to see how it compares. xD

Yeah, it was a little spooky at first, but after the first couple encounters, I started to expect when/where monsters would show up and know how to avoid them in a heartbeat. The only games that kept me kinda freaked for a while were the first two F.E.A.R. games.

Well this game will not appeal at all to people who do not like adventure games, some would say that they do like adventure games when there really talking about games like resident evil, or tomb raider, A true adventure gamer is someome who,s into first person or third person point and click games.

The soundtrack fits perfectly with the story and setting, and I still jump at certain scenes (those who have played probably know what I mean, so I won't give away spoilers). Looking forward to playing it in a few days. It may not be one of those gruesome games like Silent Hill or whatnot, but the suspense is what makes it such a great play!
I played this game and it scared the living shit outta me. It wasn't the ending, or the (SPOILER!) deformed child, it was just the creepy atmosphere and the feeling of never knowing when you might be in danger. That and the teddy bear thing really freaked me out. Just the spooky aura you get while playing it makes you want to run to the store to buy a few nightlights.
Overall though it was a good game. Amazing details too.
the one part where you are crawling in the furnace and you see a shadow run past you was the scariest and most unexpected thing that has ever happened to me in a game... the music blasted and i jumped back, had chills, and just sat there completely frozen for about a minute. it was terrifying. there weren't many "jump out" scares but the ones that were were completely unexpected and terrifying. it was more about suspense and the anticipation for SOMETHING to happen. amazing game should b a movie
Dammit, my computer won't play this game the way it should. I have all the capabilities but for some reason it's extremely glitchy. I love games that a lot of suspense and it kills me that I can't play this one. Everytime I get to the second floor, the computer craps out on me and shuts the game off. Any suggestions other than getting a new computer?

I really really recommend Darkness within : In Pursuit of Loath Nolder ( is a adventure game like this one fps style and click ) is inspired by H.P Lovecraft writings. Is a masterpiece like this one. An eerie experience you will never forget, give it a try. Cheers

@seriousGEO. Putting appart the bugs, Call of Cthulhu: Dark corners of the earth was awesome! Nosferatu, The wrath of Malachi is good too, and the music is good, tho it becomes ridiculously hard at times.
The mask thing, the basement - this game is awesome. I dont liked quests so first time i played it i used a walktrough - i've experienced all game nights at one time))
After that i went to sleep with the lights on.

Omg it's AWESOME. Some of it can get confusing (I had to enlist the help of my parents lol), but it's a challenging mystery. The graphics are incredible, the story line is ingenious, and you're gauranteed to never get bored with it.
it gets 7+ cause you will not see physical violence, the maturity its mainly what it does with your mind, what happens in this game, is possible in real life, thats what makes it so scary

You should play it, because there's nothing really scary during the gameplay. Only the ending is a bit creepy, but it's OK. The only scary thing is the atmosphere. I've played more scary games than this, but i still think this game is quite OK :) Good luck!

I don't think it's a bad game. But is definitively overrated and mundane. It's not THAT scary. Yes, it does have a couple of boo scares and some atmosphere, but it's slow paced, frustrating and eventually dull; not to mention its meanspirited puzzles.
Kinda depends on your definition of "freaky". If you're looking for stuff from DOOM 3 or F.E.A.R., this isn't the game for you. But, to me, the sheer silence and suspense and out-of-the-corner-of-your-eye stuff is downright intense.
I must be really stupid but I would never have been able to get very far in this game without the Cheats. I didn't know how or when to use the tools and certainly would never have thought to use them the way we're supposed to. Example: Putting a newspaper under a door and pushing the key out with one of those tools. Like I would have thought of that. Not! :)
For some reason I can't get the game to play on my PC. It runs in slow motion... Wonder why? I can play better and more demanding games like Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines and The Sims 2. o.O And I don't like that it's first-player POV... But if it's really that scary, I'll have to try it on my roommate's computer.

This game is SO great. If you're patient and know to love eerie suspenseful gameplay that slowly grows on you. I love all about the game, story, graphics, controls (alternate) and so on, except its shortness is a bit a pain. But that's only when you know exactly what to do. Instead, you'll search high and low what there is...

I felt a striking resemblance between this game and H.P Lovecraft's short story "The Rats in the Walls"... Made it even better for me :D

the one part where you are crawling in the furnace and you see a shadow run past you was the scariest and most unexpected thing that has ever happened to me in a game... the music blasted and i jumped back, had chills, and just sat there completely frozen for about a minute. it was terrifying. there weren't many "jump out" scares but the ones that were were completely unexpected and terrifying. it was more about suspense and the anticipation for SOMETHING to happen. amazing game should b a movie

Dammit, my computer won't play this game the way it should. I have all the capabilities but for some reason it's extremely glitchy. I love games that a lot of suspense and it kills me that I can't play this one. Everytime I get to the second floor, the computer craps out on me and shuts the game off. Any suggestions other than getting a new computer?

scratches along with undying and silent hill 1 are the scariest games i have ever played....if anyone knows another good atmospheric horror game with good music... reply ... i haven't played a good horror in a while :)

I really really recommend Darkness within : In Pursuit of Loath Nolder ( is a adventure game like this one fps style and click ) is inspired by H.P Lovecraft writings. Is a masterpiece like this one. An eerie experience you will never forget, give it a try. Cheers

@seriousGEO. Putting appart the bugs, Call of Cthulhu: Dark corners of the earth was awesome! Nosferatu, The wrath of Malachi is good too, and the music is good, tho it becomes ridiculously hard at times.

The mask thing, the basement - this game is awesome. I dont liked quests so first time i played it i used a walktrough - i've experienced all game nights at one time))
After that i went to sleep with the lights on.
Scratches still gives me creeps)
The ending itself wasnt so scary as i thought, but constant expectation that something bad will happen closer to the end became just unbearable.

this game is seriously amazing and scary, it scared the fkin sht out of me, even the trailer is fkin scary, i really i swear i shuddered, but 1 thing is i cant remember the story :(, all i remember is that in the basment theres a child?? or watever?? if someone knows it please tell me, and btw the band or watever the group that made the music is called Cellar Of Rats i remember from the into ;)!!donno wat the song is though!!

i love this game but havent played in awhile cause now i have a mac :( but what i remember from the story is you are a writer looking for desolation to write. then you start to uncover the mystery about the blackwood family. it was like there was african voodoo on them? and they gave birth to a deformed child which they pretended was dead but they actually locked him up in the basement and thats why he was in there in the end,

I have also played this game, jumped at the ending when I investigated that room in the basement with the wall missing...nothing beyond but darkness..... and the staring eyes..... and then.... GREAT GOOGLY MOOGLY!!!! Really creeped me out!

I have this game along with Barrow Hill!
I got both of them for $5 each. (What a deal!)
And I have to say out of all the horror/suspense games I've played, Scratches was the first that made me scream. O_o Especially with that high pitched eerie music on some parts.

This game is AWESOME. I love th dark atmosphere while playing. If you play this at night with all lights turned off and pulled the speakers to the maximum it's really scary. I would recommed to everyone to buy this fantastic game!

Omg it's AWESOME. Some of it can get confusing (I had to enlist the help of my parents lol), but it's a challenging mystery. The graphics are incredible, the story line is ingenious, and you're gauranteed to never get bored with it.
I recommend buying it!
And yeah, it's pretty scary. :)

it gets 7+ cause you will not see physical violence, the maturity its mainly what it does with your mind, what happens in this game, is possible in real life, thats what makes it so scary

This game is so hard XD or IM an idiot, But though nothing happens really early into the game its still freaky because you have the feeling something IS about to happen. =) I haven't played it much a friend loaned it to me I'm a little hesistant to keep playing it because he said something like " dont look in the mirrors" and " there is this one part that will scare you to death" what do you think I should do ?

You should play it, because there's nothing really scary during the gameplay. Only the ending is a bit creepy, but it's OK. The only scary thing is the atmosphere. I've played more scary games than this, but i still think this game is quite OK :) Good luck!

I don't think it's a bad game. But is definitively overrated and mundane. It's not THAT scary. Yes, it does have a couple of boo scares and some atmosphere, but it's slow paced, frustrating and eventually dull; not to mention its meanspirited puzzles.

Kinda depends on your definition of "freaky". If you're looking for stuff from DOOM 3 or F.E.A.R., this isn't the game for you. But, to me, the sheer silence and suspense and out-of-the-corner-of-your-eye stuff is downright intense.

I must be really stupid but I would never have been able to get very far in this game without the Cheats. I didn't know how or when to use the tools and certainly would never have thought to use them the way we're supposed to. Example: Putting a newspaper under a door and pushing the key out with one of those tools. Like I would have thought of that. Not! :)

For some reason I can't get the game to play on my PC. It runs in slow motion... Wonder why? I can play better and more demanding games like Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines and The Sims 2. o.O And I don't like that it's first-player POV... But if it's really that scary, I'll have to try it on my roommate's computer.

This game is SO great. If you're patient and know to love eerie suspenseful gameplay that slowly grows on you. I love all about the game, story, graphics, controls (alternate) and so on, except its shortness is a bit a pain. But that's only when you know exactly what to do. Instead, you'll search high and low what there is...
