My training R22 is down for it's engine over haul. I haven't been able to train for a couple of months. I'm ready for my solo. I'm just waiting for our helicopter to return. I plan to finish my private license this year! I'd like to get up to at least 200 flight hours before adding another rating. It could take a while at this rate... I love the R22 but I'm looking forward to getting some time in a R44. The 'Enstrom 280FX' is very nice also. It can handle stronger winds (30+ mph gusts).
I have one of these for sale for 27k if anyone wants to buy one. It is new, and was given to me by my grandfather who passed away!. We have it at a hanger in Albany.
Pretty neat, Congrats on learning to fly one of those things, I hear they are very tough compared to planes. I am learning on Flight Sim lol, Its nothing compared to the real thing but its a start and is hard at first. I agree with others as far as the engine sound at first lol. Have fun flying!
I'll never fully understand what motivates people to go for the chopper training...fixed wing aircraft are challenging as it is...but helicopters seem so difficult to feel out and control...
it's just something that doesn't appeal to me although the benefits are obvious
When I made the slightest movement, it moved. The first bit of it was really scary actually. After about 10-15 mins I got used to it and found it really good. Very hard though!

i would like to ask a qualified helicopter pilot,is there any difference in the handling of the r22 cyclic in comparacen to a conventional cyclic as say on a md 500
@anglosax001 As for the cyclic position, no not really. Especially once you are proficient at flying. It is all a control between your legs. As for how smooth and forgiving the helicopter is, the r22 is very touchy and not very forgiving. Comparing to a Schwitzer 300, the 300 is easier to takeoff, land, and hover.
@kmarzfg out of all the things ive ever done in life this one had me very nervous when we got into the air. being up so high in something so small with the wind blowing around, i felt like i was going to die. they had to take me back early lol. of course id try again
I know how you felt. Although I didn't have to go back early it was pretty exciting. I've gotten up to 18 hrs of flight training in the R22 (Austin, TX). I love it. I'm ready for my 'solo' flight soon. Learning to hover was 'by far' much harder than you could imagine! It seems to always be windy around here. Learning to hover in the wind really prepares you for flying when its calm. You'll love if you continue! If time permits I should get my private license in 2011 !! Don't stop now. It's great
Hi, I did my Privet Pilot instruction at this Airport. At PDK flight Academy in 2000. I love PDK airport, bring me lots of fun memories. I live in Utah now. Very nice Video!
The initial first class with an R22 is usually around $135 (30min classroom/30min flight) I've been taking classes at the Long Beach Airport (CA). Google it and their sight will give you a cost breakdown for all classes. That'll give you a general idea what to expect most places. Ultimately, the avg cost to finally get your pvt license will be around $16,000...Commercial up to $35,000. Good luck and have a blast

If you were watching the stick of a pilot flying one it looks like its not even moving, that's how sensitive/touchy it is.

I was thinking about signing up for this exact same class. Were you able to keep your nerves in check for the flight?
