It was either 1970 or 1971. John Mayall played first, then Sweathog, then Black Sabbath. They did get booed off the stage. Lead singer said we don't need this bullshit, you people just go on home and they walked off the stage. True story whether you believe it or not. I don't really care.
Saw them back in early 70's at Kiel Auditorium in St. Louis. They opened for Black Sabbath. They rocked. Black Sabbath came out and got booed off the stage during their second song. People started throwing bottles and shit. Those were the days.
If you're talking about the '74 show at Kiel you are full of it. I was there. Everyone was there to see Sabbath. Throwing bottles at them? That's just a lot of crap. It wad a great show.
i new it was a band with black intheir name ,but wasnt sure ,thanks. Frosty was great i think he put water on one of his drums for effect , have the album on vinyl
Black Oak Arkansas pops into my head for some reason. They were fairly new and unknown at the time and, if I remember right, pretty forgettable. The Sweathog set was, however, unforgettable. The sword through the flaming guitar takes me back.
@Doobie1975 I don't think so. Let's look at the top ten for the week of October 20 1971 "Tired of Being Alone" Al Green, "Theme From Shaft" Isaac Hayes,"Maggie May" Rod Stewart" and the Number one song the week this song was released was "YoYo" by the Osmond Brothers. I think 33 was a very generous number.
@dubeshot I was there! Remember Schachter got sick and GFR couldn't come on and Sweathog played a 2 1/2 hour blistering set. They were absolutely amazing.
@plateumpire29 They were great i was there too BJ SET HIS GUITAR ON FIRE AND RAN A SWORD THROUGH IT (synthesizer), do you happen to remember who opened for GFR for the rain check?
"lenny lee" huh? damn, always wondered who that show-stealin', stage-masterin' guy was! saw them with humble pie and ten yrs. after, and people , sweathog had both bands on defense! so, where is lenny lee today? anybody? thanks.
Yea man That Frosty can slam some drums, They opened up for Black Sabbath, in the early 70's at the Civic, on Oahu, With all that PAKALOLO we were smoking & rocking to sweathogs music, by the time Black Sabbath came on, I was stone out of my mind, and falling a sleep to the heavy sounds of Black Sabbath. Sabbath is Heavy , but Sweathog is rock N roll. LONG LIVE ROCK N ROLL........
I saw them open the show in 1971 for Mountain and Black Sabbath at the Gator Bowl. The stage was set up with the famous wall of sound that Sabbath was using at the time. I was 10 rows back at stage height. What a show!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OH MAN! I have been looking for these guys for YEARS. they were a perennial opening act in the early 70's. I saw them open for Edgar Winter's White Trash and Black Sabbath in Nov. 71 at Winterland and about 7 or 8 other gigs over the next4-5 years. I always went for the headliner, but having sweathog on the bill was also just as big a draw for me. GREAT live band.
Lenny Goldsmith's sons are in the band Dawes. They are wonderful. If you love Neil Young, C, S&N, Jackson Browne, The Band, you should definitely check them out.
@ Peredrum and RTHinAZ - I apologize. I was wrong. (just got the e-mail from Dave this morning). I only met Lenny and Frosty once, when the opened for Black Sabbath in Houston in 1970. I knew BJ, Bobby and Rex better as they stayed at our house whenever they had a gig in Aspen.
@Bailey323WHallam Hi I'm the one who had those songs posted. I took them off because I got some rude comments. But this band is to good and needs to be heard. So I brouuht them back. Enjoy
@peredrum, I'm Dave Johnson's cousin, Bailey. BJ is the lead singer of Hallelujah, not Lenny. I asked Dave this question recently, and have it straight from him. Dave, Lenny & Frosty were on backup vocals. Lenny and Dave were co-founders of Sweathog. Bobby Burns and Rex Ludwick were part of the second generation Sweathog after Lenny and Frosty left the band.
@Bailey323WHallam I knew this band back in the San fernando valley. They were a well know group. I saw them play many times. That is Lenny on vocals. I'd know his voice anytime. I also don't remember Frosty ever singing..his great drumming was more than enough.
I'm Crying.... I Remember,I Sang On This...Oh My Gosh!....I Was 18 And In A Band Called Pollution. The Best Two Clubs Around Were The Brass Ring And The Chronicle! What Great Memories.Ohhhhhh! I'm Overwhelmed! What A Great Band !Frosty Would Play DrumsWith His Hands Y'all!
I Know Dave's Still Around ....Where's Frosty... Lenny..?
Hey TATA; I actually remember you. I saw FROSTY last Thursday in Austin TX. Jimi Calhoun(Bass player w/Dr John) was also there and Frost surprised me when he brought him over to see me. We were all friends back in the 70's. I remember the Brass Ring( Ventura Blvd/Encino & the Chronicle@ V.N blvd &Ventura Blvd Sherman Oaks) My good friend Jeff Pocaro and I played there.
Those were some great times too!
see my Youtube "authors comment link" and see if you remember me.
@peredrum. You are exactly correct about this band. How did you know that?
I just looked you up on youtube. OMG!!!
Man... I saw you playing with Tim Bogart (Bass player Vanilla Fudge Band) and Jay Williams(Guitarist Gary Wright Band) in L.A. years ago. I knew I recognized your name. Unreal you are here on youtube contributing to videos. BTW..you're an awesome drummer! Hope you're are well and still playing! A true fan!!!
Saw Sweathog at Dallas Memorial Auditorium in February of 1972 with BB King and Rare Earth. These guys rocked but the entire show was great. Met Frosty years later. Very nice guy.
Band members were Dave Johnson(Bass) B.J. (Quitar) Frosty (Drums)
& Lenny Lee (Vocals & keyboards) playing a Hammond B-3 and w/a Leslie. Lenny had incredible energy and was the band leader and/or spokesmen of sorts. The were signed to CBS and record the LP at the CBS studions on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood ca.
They toured with Black Sabbath,Ten Years after,Humble Pie and Jake Giles, and Mountain just to name a few.
To answer a few questions about this band. The singer is" Lenny Lee" Goldsmith. They put the band together in the San Fernando valley, rehearsing and playing nites at the "Chronicle" (valley nite spot)on Ventura Blvd. Sherman Oaks Ca. in the early 70's. The drummer was "Frosty" from Lee Michaels band.
The manager was Lenny Stogal who sadly was on a flight in 79' that went down coming out of Chicago" No one survived the crash. I shared a house with Lenny back then and knew the band well.
I've been looking for this song for almost 10 years....thanks G'd I found it today lol. I knew the name, but didnt know the name of the band...and you can wander how many halleluja songs we have nowadays, dont ya? THANK YOUUUU CHAVEE49
Man, I remember this from when I was a kid and I loved it. Listening to it just now, I am amazed at how good it is.( Hey, I liked some pretty questionable stuff when was young). WHO is the singer and did he do anything else after this? This has a little bit of a Humble Pie sound. Love it!
Hey Bailey, I worked with your cuz at a Colorado radio station about 10 years back. Dave's a really good guy. Worked with him about a year before one day we got to talkin' on the morning show. That's when he told me about his rock n' roll past!
May have to call him and hook him up with this page:)
no kidding. they were amazing live. and yeah.......very fun guys. funny someone mentioned loggins and messina. i went with them to loggins and messina's first gig. a columbia records party in nyc. ah..the old days. the very good old days.
David Johnson, (bass, vocals co-founder), and I are cousins. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for posting the 'real' Sweathog songs!! They were amazing to watch in concert, as some of you know, and even more fun to have bunking in with us when they come to our home town!
@tkreider, sorry for the delay. yes, almost all of the band members were involved with other groups, both before and after Sweathog. Dave and Lenny would be the best sources for this. Dave had a couple of local bands in Aspen, when I was a teenager. He still plays the occasional gig. David Johnson and Lenny Lee Goldsmith are both on Facebook, you may want to contact them directly to get more answers.
Yes. Sweathog did in fact hit # 33 in the last week of 1971.

Gotta Tell a story! I remember being about
13 or 14 yrs old at the time. I was listening
to Elton John and Disco music at the time.
I remember one evening my parents bringing home this 3 LP compilation of artists entitled " The Music People". It had
the likes of "Doctor Hook", "Loggins And
Messina" and This Album from "Sweathog". I have to say I love this song...and I'm glad "YouTube" is on the
internet...so I can hear the soundtrack
from my life.
