I think this is a great example of Colin Morgan's strength as an actor; how he can express so many things - awareness of his own power reluctance to start killing... - through his face and eyes alone. And Nathaniel Parker's great too, because you can see there is something seductive about Agravaine. I do wonder how far we can go into S5 without a reveal, with Merlin's power becoming so obvious. Or does Arthur really know already but he's too pragmatic(and fond) to say?

Colin Morgan's acting in this scene is just....words fail me. It is an AMAZING scene, and the emotions (or lack thereof) in his eyes is absolutely stunning. I love love love how he played this completely BA, confident, all-powerful Merlin!! I SINCERELY hope that we'll see more of it in series 5!!

I even love the spells they say rather than the janky saying something and adding an "O" to the end of it like HP does. And they do it without wands! : )
I love the realisation in his eyes at about 0:31 that he has no choice but to kill them. But it's quite scary in the fact that he doesn't really give them a choice. I know its Agravaine (yay he's dead) but still, from that moment his mind is made up. But it isn't anger, its almost disgust at the ignorance & blindness of these fools. I like that they are exploring the darker side to Merlin's personality &showing the rather frightening side of complete & fierce loyalty. Killing without mercy.

Ok, he wasn’t really fair to the men, because they didn’t get any warning, but it was still technically self-defence. It’s hard to say what he would have done if Agravaine had genuinely surrendered at 2:05. He couldn’t trust him with his secret, but he obviously didn’t want to kill him. Any way you look at it, Agravaine brought this on himself.
I wish there would be this massive uprising of all the bad magic users against Arthur lead by Morgana, and then all the good magic users (the Druids, the Catha guy) come to Camelot to offer help.
And they'd all be in the meeting hall and Arthur'd be like "You pledge allegiance to me?"
but the leader would be like"We pledge allegiance to Emrys."
Then they would all bow to Merlin and it would be EPIC.
I want it to be like that, not just some tiny mistake Merlin makes or something.

There have been a lot of scenes like this this series, where Merlin is running away or trying to talk his way out of a confrontation with a powerful enemy, and everyone assumes he's shying away from a fight because he's too weak to win it, but in reality he's not afraid OF his enemy, he's afraid FOR them. The question was never "will Merlin die" it was always "will Merlin kill" and for once, here, the answer is "yes."
Did anyone else recognize that the main way to kill somebody in Merlin, is to let him fly through the air with magic, hoping that he/she breaks his/her neck while landing? xD
I knew Aggravaine would die once he found out Merlin had magic. Unless it is a show's finale, the big secret will normally remain a secret one way or another. Meaning that the person who finds out will either die, or become good and not tell anyone about it.

I totalling love this scene - it probably the best scene in the entire season.... Finally they start showing the real power of Merlin - no spoken spells, just the sublety of eye movements. Merlin displays such strength of character with this stand against Agravaine.... and he appears to be controlling his power with a tight leash - no cute smiles, no smug looks.... just power and strength - love, love, love it....
"OH HELLO!" all of my family burst out Laughing at this point and nearly missed the next because of it! That was just epic by itself! And the rest of the series finale was beyond epic! This Merlin scene reminded me of Series 1 Merlin in the way he easily wields his power. Agravaine's days were numbered the minute he kidnapped & harmed Gaius and threatened his mother's home.
Nimueh found that out on the Isle of the Blessed when she killed Gaius & harmed his mother; Edwin Muirden, Aredian, & Morgause when they threatened Gaius; he told the Goblin he'd kill him if Gaius was harmed.
Merlin will kill for Gaius & Hunith, he hates it but he will do it coldly.
@gardensall I like that statement! lol .... I love how you could just see Merlin hated killing, at the end when he walks away... but he hared Gaius, and was going after Arthur. He just looked up and screamed, and the guy was thrown backwards, who stabbed his father. I love how his raw and extreme power just flows out of him when it involves someone he really cares about!

When Merlin has been under attack, Gaius seems to stretch his long unused powers to protect him ( against Morgause, against the Manticore, making the Morteus flower antidote). Sometimes I wonder if Gaius is actually his biological grandfather like Zeddicus in "Legend of the Seeker" is to Richard Cypher.

I love Merlin's the most, cos he's my favourite character, and he's meant to be the most powerful sorcerer of all time, so it kind of annoys me sometimes how easily he gets beaten by other sorcerers or spells and he's just like "oh I can't do that!" etc ... although you can really see how he's grown over the years, and got a lot more in tune with his powers, which I like :)
@FireflyFanatic3 YES. After Series 2 he hasn't really done anything that great. He actually had more power and smarts at 16/17 than now. But yeah you're right he has better control.

Funny though, I never thought of him as 16/17. I take every season to be a year, and they said there's a year gap between s2 and s3, and again between s3 and s4. So at th end of s4, it's 6 years since it started (by my reckoning anyway :P lol) but I always thought of Merlin as like ... 19-21 when it started. Never really saw him as that young...

He’s changed quite a bit. His voice was that of a young boy and gets deeper each year until it’s now a deep adult male voice. The “baby face” has disappeared and his features are more defined. Even the year he was skinny and clumsy was normal until muscle formed. It’s a testament to the show and Morgan that they know how adolescent boys develop.Merlin may be 21 now, but not in the beginning.

@FireflyFanatic3 It actually is Morgan's acting. His natural voice at that time was deep & mature. Before Merlin his theatre work shows him playing 16 and 24. He can play a teenager or a young man equally well. The producers said they wanted to show teen-age Merlin. If Merlin keeps up the success we may see Merlin as a retired "secret" warlock -- Dragoon without the potion :)

Yeah with Arthur's age there is actually a 'mistake' as such. Cos he gets crowned prince, which we can all assume is his 21st birthday, when he 'comes of age' in s1. However, Gaius says '25' years... o.O
@FireflyFanatic3 about Arthur and Merlin's ages: Uther mentioned in the first episode that it had been exactly 20 years since the Great Dragon was captured, which (I believe) marked the end of the Great Purge. Uther started the Purge because of Igraine's death (Arthur's birth) and it was during the Purge that the Dragonlords were killed and Balinor driven to Ialdore. Assuming he was with Hunnith for less than 1 year, that would make Merlin about 19 in series 1, and Arthur 21.

@FireflyFanatic3 I know this will probably sound strange, but I always thought of Morgana as being 2-3 years younger than Arthur, and Gwen about the same age as him. I know Morgana teased him like you'd expect a "big sister" to, but I think that's just her personality. Something about the way she dealt with her nightmares gave her a "young" feeling. As for Gwen, her "shy little girl" vibe came from her role as a servant. The strength she's shown makes her his equal in my mind.
@RenardeBlanche no it's not weird. I always thought of Morgana as younger too, till I saw someone else talking about their age and convinced me otherwise. She definitely gives off older sister vibes to me (but then I can also see 'younger sibling'ness in her relationship with Arthur... -.- lol)

I don't agree with her, and I want to cry and scream for her to see the light, but she was abused and then found out she was lied to, feared her 'father' might execute her because she had magic, and was cheated out of her birthright... I think she's one of the most well-developed characters and there is a LOT to her. I love how Katie plays her! :)

@PerlaB4 HA! I noticed that the very first time I watched the episode and was like - so he's going back to punch the wall?? Cuz that's about all he can do going that way...
i know a lot of people are disappointed that arthur didn't find out about merlin this season but i think that it was the right decision because no matter how much their friendship has grown arthur will see it as a huge betrayal. his most loyal friend has kept a secret this big for so long he is bound to feel betrayed and as he just found out that he has been betrayed by his uncle as well as morgana, i don't think he could have coped with another one.
I love how in this scene Merlin never says a word when he uses his magic, I think it makes him seem even more powerful how he doesn't need to say a spell to use magic. I'm kinda dissapointed that Aggrivaine was the only one to find out about his magic and for him to die without telling anyone. I was really hoping for a reveal this season, they better do it soon next season and in an epic way or I will be upset!
@soundsofmelancholy I know what you mean.. after making us wait so long for the reveal, I certainly hope the scene they use will be worth it & Epic. But I think that a quiet moment with Arthur can be just as epic. These are 2 great actors who can deffinetly get the most emotional impact out of the moment of the reveal. All the hurt, all the friendship, all the trust that has been built, can make this a truly epic (quiet) moment between the 2 [ IF done right ].
@xXFailCakeXx I hated the last episode i thought it was a huge let down the minute agravaine died the way he died, srsly i think the writers were drunk while writing this episode.

I have watched this like 10 times already.. it is just too short. I have been hungry for powerful Merlin all season, and deffinetly All Week. And this is all they give us. There were mabe a dozen scenes in the last 2 episodes where Merlin could have opened up to Arthur, and Arthur would have understood (at least eventualy). ..... But the secret continues. I am very disapointed.
i love this scene Agravaine at first is so dumbstruck and then he relieves just how bad this was.

@gardensall I like that statement! lol .... I love how you could just see Merlin hated killing, at the end when he walks away... but he hared Gaius, and was going after Arthur. He just looked up and screamed, and the guy was thrown backwards, who stabbed his father. I love how his raw and extreme power just flows out of him when it involves someone he really cares about!

@FireflyFanatic3 Thanks. I think the the raw power of Merlin, Morgana, and even Gaius always seems to manifest under extreme stress. Yes, even Gaius.
When Merlin has been under attack, Gaius seems to stretch his long unused powers to protect him ( against Morgause, against the Manticore, making the Morteus flower antidote). Sometimes I wonder if Gaius is actually his biological grandfather like Zeddicus in "Legend of the Seeker" is to Richard Cypher.

@gardensall yeah ... I love Merlin's the most, cos he's my favourite character, and he's meant to be the most powerful sorcerer of all time, so it kind of annoys me sometimes how easily he gets beaten by other sorcerers or spells and he's just like "oh I can't do that!" etc ... although you can really see how he's grown over the years, and got a lot more in tune with his powers, which I like :)

@FireflyFanatic3 YES. After Series 2 he hasn't really done anything that great. He actually had more power and smarts at 16/17 than now. But yeah you're right he has better control.

Funny though, I never thought of him as 16/17. I take every season to be a year, and they said there's a year gap between s2 and s3, and again between s3 and s4. So at th end of s4, it's 6 years since it started (by my reckoning anyway :P lol) but I always thought of Merlin as like ... 19-21 when it started. Never really saw him as that young...

@FireflyFanatic3 Merlin was pretty young . One of the producers actually called him “a little boy”.
He’s changed quite a bit. His voice was that of a young boy and gets deeper each year until it’s now a deep adult male voice. The “baby face” has disappeared and his features are more defined. Even the year he was skinny and clumsy was normal until muscle formed. It’s a testament to the show and Morgan that they know how adolescent boys develop.Merlin may be 21 now, but not in the beginning.

@gardensall hmm ... interesting, cos I always thought of him as older than that. I don't think the physical changes are to do with Colin's acting though, I think that's just how he as person has developed, and he looks older in his body and face etc, cos he IS older :P lol
It's interesting though, what people think of the characters ages...
at the beginning, I'd put Arthur's age at about 20-22, making him 26-28 now

@FireflyFanatic3 It actually is Morgan's acting. His natural voice at that time was deep & mature. Before Merlin his theatre work shows him playing 16 and 24. He can play a teenager or a young man equally well. The producers said they wanted to show teen-age Merlin. If Merlin keeps up the success we may see Merlin as a retired "secret" warlock -- Dragoon without the potion :)
But you're right about Arthur being about 20-22 at the beginning. I'm not sure about the ages of Gwen or Morgana at all.

@gardensall okay, now I'm even more impressed with his acting, knowing his voice is just a part of his character! I've always been impressed with his acting, I wish I could watch some of the things he did before Merlin. I think he's incredible, he's a huge inspiration to me! :)
Yeah with Arthur's age there is actually a 'mistake' as such. Cos he gets crowned prince, which we can all assume is his 21st birthday, when he 'comes of age' in s1. However, Gaius says '25' years... o.O

@FireflyFanatic3 about Arthur and Merlin's ages: Uther mentioned in the first episode that it had been exactly 20 years since the Great Dragon was captured, which (I believe) marked the end of the Great Purge. Uther started the Purge because of Igraine's death (Arthur's birth) and it was during the Purge that the Dragonlords were killed and Balinor driven to Ialdore. Assuming he was with Hunnith for less than 1 year, that would make Merlin about 19 in series 1, and Arthur 21.

But there is a mistake with the time/age thing, because though Gaius says it's been 20 years, Gaius also says in one episode that he's served loyally at Uther's side for 25 years, since Ygraine's death..... which doesn't make any sense... -.-
Just out of curiousity where would you put there ages? I think Morgana is 2-5 years older than Arthur, and Gwen1-3 yrs younger...

@FireflyFanatic3 I know this will probably sound strange, but I always thought of Morgana as being 2-3 years younger than Arthur, and Gwen about the same age as him. I know Morgana teased him like you'd expect a "big sister" to, but I think that's just her personality. Something about the way she dealt with her nightmares gave her a "young" feeling. As for Gwen, her "shy little girl" vibe came from her role as a servant. The strength she's shown makes her his equal in my mind.

@RenardeBlanche no it's not weird. I always thought of Morgana as younger too, till I saw someone else talking about their age and convinced me otherwise. She definitely gives off older sister vibes to me (but then I can also see 'younger sibling'ness in her relationship with Arthur... -.- lol)
Yeah ... I dunno why, I just always thought of Gwen as a couple of years younger, probably cos in most relationships the guy is a few years older :P

@RenardeBlanche rofl yeah you could look at it like that I guess. But I can see where Morgana's coming from. I don't agree with her, and I want to cry and scream for her to see the light, but she was abused and then found out she was lied to, feared her 'father' might execute her because she had magic, and was cheated out of her birthright... I think she's one of the most well-developed characters and there is a LOT to her. I love how Katie plays her! :)

i know a lot of people are disappointed that arthur didn't find out about merlin this season but i think that it was the right decision because no matter how much their friendship has grown arthur will see it as a huge betrayal. his most loyal friend has kept a secret this big for so long he is bound to feel betrayed and as he just found out that he has been betrayed by his uncle as well as morgana, i don't think he could have coped with another one.

I love how in this scene Merlin never says a word when he uses his magic, I think it makes him seem even more powerful how he doesn't need to say a spell to use magic. I'm kinda dissapointed that Aggrivaine was the only one to find out about his magic and for him to die without telling anyone. I was really hoping for a reveal this season, they better do it soon next season and in an epic way or I will be upset!

@soundsofmelancholy I know what you mean.. after making us wait so long for the reveal, I certainly hope the scene they use will be worth it & Epic. But I think that a quiet moment with Arthur can be just as epic. These are 2 great actors who can deffinetly get the most emotional impact out of the moment of the reveal. All the hurt, all the friendship, all the trust that has been built, can make this a truly epic (quiet) moment between the 2 [ IF done right ].

I have watched this like 10 times already.. it is just too short. I have been hungry for powerful Merlin all season, and deffinetly All Week. And this is all they give us. There were mabe a dozen scenes in the last 2 episodes where Merlin could have opened up to Arthur, and Arthur would have understood (at least eventualy). ..... But the secret continues. I am very disapointed.
