  • For fuck's sake, Michael Jackson did NOT write this song, nor did Eric Clapton, nor did Greg Phillinganes. It was written by Japanese synth-pop band, YELLOW MAGIC ORCHESTRA.

And that my friends, is the best version.

  • @jamezdd73 Actually, the Yellow Magic Orchestra version of this song, was almost instrumental, except for the chorus. When MJ heard the song, he wrote the verses and also rewrote the chorus which are used in this version and in the Greg Phillinganes' one, therefore, MJ wrote the lyrics of this song.

    PS:Excuse my bad english.

  • For fuck's sake, Michael Jackson did NOT write this song OR record it. It is GREG PHILLINGANES song! He WAS MJ's keyboard player, as well as many other HUGE artists.

  • Or maybe we could just stop arguing over which is better and just appriciate all versions of this song? Everyone has different tastes...

  • eric CRAPTON more like that alcoholic piece of shit ruined something amazing when he decided to cover this.

  • thirty nine stiffs who never got laid.

  • Truth is this song is nowhere without the Slow Hand of God Himself..... right before your eyes on You Tube babeeeee

  • YMO>Ryuichi Sakamotot>David Sylvian>Michael Jackson>Eric Clapton

  • michael better

  • better version sooperdooper guitarking

  • もうymoの曲というより、スタンダード・ナンバーやね。

  • Hmmm....paedophile or lying cheating arsehole...musically I prefer this version; morally I'd go this side too.

  • The people have sometimes thought that the song comes from him, but

the song text was originally written by Michael Jackson.

I do not know if Eric Clapton was there for, and ashamed to beg him for this song

(excl. Ryuichi Sakamoto & vocoder beat MJ and vice versa) and so on ...

Who nartürlich the song can not write something better occurs to themselves or not,

and to think only of his money. As a walker, texas ranger Chuck Norris as his brother of

he would have deserved better than guest.

  • @Lob005 The song text was NOT originally written by Michael Jackson.

  • ok you're right! I'm researching it exactly is.

It stands on - Ryuichi Sakamoto Chris Mosdell (original lyrics) Michael Jackson (additional lyrics, uncredited)

  • 0:21 The Walker, Texas Ranger coming Starring Chuck Norris

  • ymoバージョンと違うけど

    やっぱりクラプトンやね。

  • The song is reworking of a song by Japanese synthpop band Yellow Magic Orchestra. Same chorus, different lyrics (by Michael Jackson).

  • best version

  • your a dickhead amen jackson. phil collins gave up the drums to a better drummer. his own comment. every one else on stage was there for the princes trust, they didnt care who did what, where and when........take a chill pill

  • Butchered....

  • I prefer Behind the maks Michael Jackson's

  • first time i hear this track. Much more believable than Mj's version. \m/

  • Fabulous

  • also Phil Collins produced this version - what a gem!!!

  • This is a classic

EC is known as God you know.

  • best version

  • @masterofscotland poor guy, you obviously don't know anything about Michael Jackson. Prejudice is ignorance!

  • i'm a huge fan of YMO and RS but i totally this version x

  • the guitar god Eric

  • i dont care whos song it is or if you like one version or the other opinions are like assholes every one has their own

  • Just Michael's lyrics make this song good.

  • Better than jacksons in my opinion

  • This and I shot the sheriff are the only songs of his I like, sorry that I love.

  • Michael jackson version is the best.

  • Another fantastic live jam from "EC!" Just learned this and am thrilled I did as it's another great song to drum to. The lyrics are so penetrating for those of us who have been or are in this state of "broken heart limbo."

  • Love this song... I Love Micheal's Version better though!!!

  • Michael rapes the fuck out of this song

  • This is about the song not MJ whom we all love - but I think this is a great version

Long may MJ live in our hearts but we must look behind the mask

  • I still think the best version of "Behind the Mask" was the original 1979 version by Yellow Magic Orchestra, followed by the cover versions by Michael Jackson and Eric Clapton.

  • good but michael's song is better thumbs up :D

  • @liverpool836 no man fuck u

  • @liverpool836 fuck the guy who wrote the music you make sense

  • @liverpool836 fuck u

  • Fantastic fantastic song xxx

  • Love both , MJ's is great to

  • i think this is the best version. even though i'm fan of ymo who created the original version.

  • @masterofscotland we dont need to defend him court found him innocent and after a while father of that liar kid's just comitted suicide

  • @masterofscotland your opinions doesnt change the results,he is innocent end of discussion.

  • His lawyer advised him to pay out the kid at the time, Michael wanted to go to trial. You should actually research before posting BS on the internet and looking like an ignorant fool.

  • This version is great and so is Michael's. They are just two different styles that we all should learn to appreciate.

  • MJ's Version Beat;s The Crap Out Of This Version.

  • @Pokemonvid12 Your taking the piss........Not even close, MJ has murdered this, Open your ears & eyes.

  • @TheJellybaby1988 WTF? Are You Mad? Michael Jackson Owns This Version! His Sound's So Much Better.

  • this is pretty good

  • Greg Philliganes singd once this song to :)

  • This is not... good. at all. :/

  • Fantastic set up of artists I just love this song...awesome!

  • Just think for a moment YMO is from Japan and Sony is from Japan ! They all payed very well believe me ! Mike wrote The Lyrics but never released this song Sony did that and Eric Clapton could not sing this song without authorization of Sony ! This is why Sony sucks !!

  • @InferocitoMustang Geez .. I've seen every excuse imaginable why to hate Sony, but this is quite a stretch, don't you think? As for me, I am SO GLAD Sony has released this music ! Otherwise, we NEVER would have heard these GEMS that Michael had recorded. Hon, MJ was getting ready to release some of these anyway .. WITH SONY !! Would you THEN have been a naysayer? Also, Michael's kids get their share also, and I'm glad of that too.

  • @ABCHealTheWorld Michael didn't want to be released ! And what is more stupid thing Mike don't sing on three songs :)) So much about record company's !! They care about you !!

  • @InferocitoMustang Michael wanted to live on through his music and videos and dance. He even said that. Btw, you talk as if MJ told you specifically that he didn't want these songs released. You're crazy, because many of the songs he was putting the finishing touches on to release another album. So you're saying WHAT? I have a feeling you are a troll and could care less about Michael. Ugh.

  • @ABCHealTheWorld We talk about business here not love !! If Mike wanted that Behind The Mask be released why didn't do that ? He have almost 30 years for that !! Now is dead and we talk about how people don't care about MJ !! After all everything that Michael did to himself is his fault not yours or mine !!

  • @InferocitoMustang Darling, there are reasons it BTM didn't fit in with the genre of tunes on certain cd's. Why don't you just stop telling us what Michael did and did not want. If you're not Michael, then I really don't care to listen to your opinions, and they are only "opinions". My opinion is .. I LOVE the MICHAEL album and I have 3 copies of it. Special thanks to MJ's dear friends, T.Riley, Neff-U, 50cent, Akon, L.Kravitz .. and one more who I can't think of his name .. lol.

  • @ABCHealTheWorld I am musician but this is not important ! I have collection of Michael music and many more but only real deal not some sampled bullshit !!

  • @InferocitoMustang Sorry for the late reply. Well, so you're a musician. Well, guess what, so am I. And furthermore, it doesn't matter whether the Pope is a musician. It has nothing to do with this song. But, I'm bored with this chat. Bye sweetie. Keep playing your MJ cd's! Chow.

  • @ABCHealTheWorld Next 6 years you would listen to MJ never released songs !!

  • Way to rock the 'Miami Vice' look E.C.!!!

  • Nice version. I didn't even know he sang this song.

  • michael's sounds way better. You can tell there's a difference. Michael change some of the lyrics to his liking. The song are still different. It called sampling.

  • Excelent but Michael Jacksons voice is better.

  • @Aprakil

No it isn't out of all four versions I have heard Eric Clapton's voice is actually the best for this song, then Phil Oakey's...

  • Awesome tone

  • MJ never wrote ths song it was originally written by Chris Mosdell and Ryuichi Sakamoto. Since then the song has been covered by various other artisits including Michael Jackson and Eric Clapton. Original release was in 1979 if you want confirmation of this go check wikipedia

  • @kirbyphix Try to listen the original version...

  • actually, the original composition of the song is all about the composition, it's not a song actually, it's mostly about the electronic melody, arranged with little chours and the original version is good of course with it's own idea.

if we talk about this composition as a song, than that's michael's total creation, he sculpted a total song, out of an electronic melody, created lyrics and some melodical parts which was absent in the original version, cuz it wasn't planned to be an actual SONG".

  • Ray cooper,for someone with a tambourine,has some presence!

  • How cool is this guy!!!!!!!!!!

  • Both Michael Jackson and Eric Clapton TOTALLY DESTROYED THE ORIGINAL VERSION, SPIRIT, AND COMPOSITION OF THAT SONG CREATED IN 1979 BY THE ORIGINAL JAPAN BAND "YMO". SHAME ON THEM!!!!!

  • @musicforanyone Good Lord! Michael wrote it and sings it the same as eric does....actually Michael sings it better!!! so how the hell has he destroyed his own record???????????????

  • Ryuichi Sakamoto & Eric Clapton = Golden

  • Who is this percussionist?

    I want know his name.

  • @nyxxmama the bald guy with black glasses who's on at the start?? that's Ray Cooper, one of the all-time legends.. He isn't actually Paul Schaffer's dad....

  • MJ's is way better!

  • This is great! Thanks for posting. The first time I saw Clapton live was with Cream in 1968 at the old Backbay Theater in Boston.

  • the baldy man with sunglasses was at the time probably the most used stage percussionist of the late 80s and 90s,sorry can't remember his name but Michael used him Tina turner elton John I think, basically if a concert went out on TV live like a central park gig he would be playing and shakin his thing., Paulinho Da Costa probably got more studio work

  • michael wroteeee this ! XD <3

  • OMG the Michael Jackson version is a thousand times better!! much respect to mr. clapton though a legend and the only man to enter the rock n roll hall of fame 3 times

  • ugh, eric clapton the bluesman. he's really playing the blues here - NOT. wtf eric this is desperate, so much cream flannel, so 80's in the worst way possible. robert johnson must be crying so hard.

  • @crapitoutjim Why? You expect him to sing nothing but "Crossroads" & "Have you ever loved a woman" forever? Look on his mid-80s work as a break from the norm. He needed to resurrect his career at the time after too long drinking & staggering through concert tours. We all looked 'different' at that time...

  • Michael Jackson sounds so good singing this song. Eric is not on this level. The lyrics do not fit his style.

  • Who's the bald guy with the sunglasses?

  • Michael jackson have sing this 2 and thead is beater

  • MJ version a lot better. It could be in Thriller.

This song was by Ryuichi Sakamoto, YMO...Yellow Magic Orchestra. Listen to "Merry christmas, Mr. Lawrence". Oh such a beautiful melody.

Sakamoto and MJ both true genius.

  • Why are you all listening to this if Mj version is so good - I LOVE Eric! Hypocritical arse holes - change channels then!

  • @dillis2005 I like Eric but this is terrible. MJ KILLED IT!!!!! Oh & for those who keep saying MJ didnt do it first he recorded it between 1979 & 80 with Q

  • @frednichols Don't get so upset, it isn't that bad. It's just a bit dated - like the threads.

  • Why are you all listening to this if Mj version is so good - I LOVE Eric!

  • @dillis2005 People just wanted to check it out. I'm sure they all went back to the MJ version vebcause it kills this & this isnt worth a second listen. That said I like Eric but this isnt his style

  • I like Michael's version better.

  • este tema tambien saco michael jackson y es bueno el tema bravaso..!!

  • este tema tambien saco michael jackson

  • Michael JACKSONS owns this song, and wrote it.

  • @peacewarrior Michael Does not OWN the song, Yellow light Orchestra does. they created this in '79! Michael heard the song in '82 and loved it. He then decided to write lyrics to the song, which is what you are hearing in this video and on the new Michael Jackson album.

  • @dvp4life Hi I didnt mean he owns it legally or in any material way, I meant he nails it, he made it his own and hit the money, he sings it the best etc. This is my opinion, I dont really know the legalities but thanks for sharing.

  • @dvp4life nah Chris Mosdell wrote the lyrics, MJ added some later

  • @dvp4life Yes Michael Jackson didn't write the song but he recorded it and made it sound Modern and it's amazing I mean I love this song by YLO and Eric Clapton I love all the versions of this Track they are are all Amazing but I'm a MJ fan so I love his version the most

  • @ADKIc3mAnX36O its YMO

  • @dvp4life Yellow Magic Orchestra

  • @dvp4life its actually Yellow Magic Orchestra(YMO)

  • @dvp4life so music is by YMO and lyrics by MJ...But YMO version without MJ lyrics sounds incomplete... the idea of music of YMO is interesting but you feel the lack of something....Luckily MJ wrote the lyrics! MJ's version is complete convincing, is perfect! We love u Michael!

  • @dvp4life Nearly. Yellow Magic Orchestra recorded it in 1978. Quincy Jones (Micheal's producer) heard it and loved it, but Micheal wasn't impressed. Greg Phillingaines (Micheal's keyboard player) asked if he could record it and it did OK-ish on the Dance chart and Micheal reconsidered, and recorded his own but then decided not to release it.

  • who are they?

  • MJ took it to another level .. it's that simple ♥

  • Cool song.....Love Eric!

  • How epic would this song be if Michael's vocals were combined with Clapton's guitar solo?

  • @muzic29 clapton is ok, but his guitar carries too much anxiety for the song... MJ's version is just what MJ wanted,,,

  • Can't stop listening to Michael's version - Michael is a genius

  • YMO♨ ’s song. composed by Ryuichi Sakamoto and Yukihiro Takahashi.

  • Michael's version puts the old versions/original renditions to shame.

  • Michael's version blows this one out of the water. Michael's vocals are powerful- just amazing. Claption's vocals are very weak. Well I am so glad Michael version is on his new album. I'm listening to it over and over! Epic!

  • Oh Wow, I just came here to compare Michael's version with this one. Well, there is absolutely no comparison. Michael's version blowsthis one out of the water. Clapton's vocals are soooo weak compared to Michael's its amazing. Have you heard Michael belting out "Who do you loooove? Epic! What a huge difference. Just love Michael's version. Can't stop listening to it. Miss you Michael

  • @tricia48559 YOU SAID IT ALL..MJ knocked it out of the park!!!!

  • @tricia48559 MJ knocked it out of the park!!!! The best MJ!!!

  • I am glad this song find home in mjj's new album!

  • I never knew this was a song Michael wrote lyrics too.

I have a Clapton album with this on it.

  • this is the real crossover fusion music, i think. isn't it?

  • Michael Jackson's genius song writing gave this song words, for eric to rock on to

  • This version is okay..but I prefer the original and Michael's. Michael has more emotion and he's fast when he sings so you're kinda left like "what did you just say..?" which makes you want to hear it more and more. And that saxophone at the beginning of Michaels? Daamn. So awesome. But it's opinionated..

  • I just found out about this song last week....pretty awesome.....

  • michael jackson was the voice for this song...and I lke much more his version..

  • This is YMO’s song!

  • This is YMO’s song!!

  • Michaels version is much much MUCH better

  • I LOVE THE MJ VERSION

  • is true jackson work too..second cover page of "AUGUST" E.Clapton album track 11. BEHIND THE MASK (Mosdell/Sakamoto/Jackson)

  • I like this ver. very nice. thanks!

  • Behind The Mask music is written by The Yellow Magic Orchestra in 1979. The original lyrics was written by Chris Mosdell, based on an idea is also The Yellow Magic Orchestra. Michael Jackson self covered the album and made a demo without a notify YMO and that's what the new album called Michael. was intend to put his album Thriller. Sakamoto still haven't notified who ever mixed the original on Michael, demo either.

  • YMOの曲だろ?

  • my god, that is one sexy man!!!!

  • love the song in Michael`s voice, its amazing, the best song of the album "Michael" with "best of joy" :O)

  • the original track is by Michael was suppose to be on thriller however legal issues prevented it from being released years later it was covered by this guy

  • @succeed06 I love the way you refer to him as 'this guy'! It's ERIC CLAPTON!

  • mj version is way better mj wudnt do a cover if he didnt think it cud work like beatles come together its such a good cover

  • @foxymj Michael's isn't a cover... Michael wrote these lyrics. The music is by the Yellow Magic Orchestra, and the lyrics are Michael's.

Eric Clapton and Greg Philliganes are covering Michael.

  • @Jordy216 the lyrics arent michaels either, chris mosdell wrote the lyrics, michael has a few "additional"lyrics that he added to the song, but he didnt write the song. he def. does the best job of it though so i guess who cares!!!love u michael RIP xo

  • @Jordy216 MJ wrote additional lyrics from the original by YMO.

  • @Jordy216 not exactly true, the song existed for about 10 years before1987 when Michael jackson wrote some additional lyrics. Thats all. Claptons version was from before Michaels addional lyrics so no these aren't Jacksons lyrics

  • @Jordy216 yes, you are right, michael wrote this song in the off the wall era!

  • @Jordy216 Michael covered it.... Chris Mosdell and Ryuichi Sakamoto wrote the song... Michael just wrote some few extra lyrics for it when he recorded it ...

  • WRITTEN BY MJ

  • @foxymj Actually the music was originally written by Ryuichi Sakamoto for his band YMO. It was later given lyrics by Chris Mosdell and then further lyrics by MJ.

  • this song lyrics come originally form Michael Jackson. thats becaus its such a great track.. love eric Clapton but i think the vocals from MJ will beat it all away!

  • @MasterStiddle yes, that song will be on new MJ album

  • @MasterStiddle They do! I just heard it, AMAZING!!

  • Here goes the personnel as I recognize them (someone correct me if I'm worng) Eric Clapton - Lead & Rhythm Guitars and vocals Mark Knopfler - Rhythm Guitars Nathan East - Bass & backing vocals Steve Ferrone - Drums Ray Cooper - Percussion Tessa Niles - Backing Vocals Katie Kisson - Backing Vocals Elton John - Piano Alan Clark - Organ Yes, they are a super group!!!
  • Another one of those great Clapton songs from the 80's that was unreleased on American radio. What a crime! I think that it, along with a few other songs from the "August" album, would've charted well if given the chance. I just don't understand how those geniuses at the record companies can keep terrific music like this hidden from the masses. Does anyone know if this song was a single in other countries?

  • @vodude Ye this was released in Ireland and UK, not sure where else

  • MJ!

  • 0:11 Is that Elton??

  • So coooool!!!!!

  • This December we can here MJ's vocal ver.

  • I feel in heaven !!!!!!

  • whats the name of the bald man, dark glasses ?, the percussionist, I have seen him playing , every time there is a big british band assembled.

  • @abdell2222 that's Ray Cooper

  • @MathColeto thank you Math

  • poor RYUICHI SAKAMOTO.

few people know he wrote this song.

  • @LunaMoon0925 actually, i think for the most part, people have forgotten this version and only know the YMO version. thank you, focusing lens of history!
