Some of the singularitarians are very close to crossing the line of crackpottery. It's interesting how many of them predict the singularity will happen just before the end of their lives (and the idea is not new). Marvin Minsky predicted it would happen in the 90s, now Kurzweil predicts it by 2030.

It's rapture for nerds who are afraid to die and are too intelligent to believe in religious baloney.

It seems that they're mostly describing the past rather than the future. We are already a symbiotic human/machine culture, and much of what we now call civilization is either sustained by or completely dependent upon digital technologies which were at one time (typically 20-30 years ago) called "artificial intelligence".
