ytblows .... is a dumb ass kid from the word go and never served our country ...So take this post as a idiot blowing smoke. Dear "ytblows " we all know that you are only eight years old and watch the history channel at night before mommy tucks you into bed and Gives you a wet kiss on the cheek so you don't pee the bed.
P.s fuel was 27 cents a gallon back then not 3.69 like today... Please take your child remarks to a walt disney blog where you belong.
ytblows, the opening statement "designed to be a troop transport, not a gunship" says it all. Hueys performed the jobs they were designed for very well, but made mediocre gunships, as the Blackhawks do now. Cobras, derived from them, were, and are(as the King Cobra), excellent attack helos, only recently surpassed in capability by the latest generation of mission-specific combat choppers. And what was wrong with investors making money off an aircraft that fulfilled its' design requirements?
The second helo I ever flew was a HUEY and to "blame" the loss on it is ignorant; as in not having any idea about the subject. 40 Countries fly the HUEY. They made about 10,000 which for an aircraft is an amazingly high number. It was deficient leadership that lost that war. Regardless of your politics you have to agree it still is a great aircraft; used ones go for over $4 million today. The market says its a great helicopter and so do I.
Oh, I got more to say. Besides, if it's so flawed why do lots of people use them all over the world to this day? Oh and the Vietnam war being "lost" can't be blamed on the huey, if you're gonna think like that why not also blame it on the B-66 destroyers? If you want to bash crappy helicopters bash something like the aerospatalie gazelle.
hey ytblows you're the dumb ass you don't know anything about the huey. I was originally meant to be a medevac helicopter so they were never meant to be a weapon, but even then they are still pretty good at killing people. and yes they are easy to shoot down IF YOU HAVE AN RPG!!! like most helicopters. The huey actually has reasonable fuel economy compared to the black hawk and the only real reason the US bought the black hawk was to replace them-not to make up for any deficiencies.
Hey ytblows... did you ever ride in a huey? I did. They took us where we needed to go and they brought us back. Anyone that depended on hueys to get you home will tell you that nothing sounded better than the sound of a huey coming in to pick you up. Even today, 39 years later, I get that same feeling whenever I hear the sound of a helicopter flying low.
Wow, military historians are gonna love that, a whole war lost because of helicopter losses, really? The Huey assured evacuation for many wounded and helped in the many combat victories of american forces.
ya and while you're at it just say that 60,000 troops lost in vietnam were poorly trained and died so the cia can gain control of the opium triangle. get a fuckin' job!!!! if you must know; the huey was the best design at the time it was bought and is one of the best today, and yes the huey can fly at night. do some fuckin' research.
Yeah "alexvariocam" that's why so many were shot down and we lost the war. Then we had to develope the Blackhawk to take care of the Huey's deficiences.
Oh and by the way, They are an inherently inneficient weapon. They suck fuel, and they are relatively easy to shoot down. Go check your history of Somalia for a reference to "Blackhawk Down." Ya dumb ass.

Anything that flies can be shot down. Ask Francis Gary Powers. Whoops, he's dead. Never mind.

hundreds of pilots, historians, military commanders and engineers would disagree with your overall perception of the UH-1.

What a load of bullshit. The Hueys are one of the best helicopters there is.
