It's not unreasonable to assume a hispanic in Miami would speak Spanish first. With your second gripe, you have a good point. This is why it would be easier for everyone to just SPEAK ENGLISH FIRST. I've never been to Miami, but where I live, its like ESL classes are almost empty once you get to the high school level. It used to seem like Hispanic immigrant parents didn't really try to learn much English because they expected their kids to learn it or already know it and translate everything when they needed it, but now, younger parents know at least a little once they get here and try to learn and use English.
What i hate are people who wont stay in their country & try & help solve the problems their country have. They bring their problems to other peoples countries. To me they are like traitors. This is one of myriad experiences of 2nd generation Americans. My only peeve is that this young lady is so sore at her parents for not having learned English. This is a phenomenon of many 2nd generation children regardless of thier ethnicity or country of origen. These are not experiences limited to people of Spanish-speaking background. My cousins in Sweden speak 3 or 4 languages including English. I think it only benefits those who learn to speak other than their primary language. Americans should be learning English, Spanish, and maybe even a few other languages. I'm a 4th generation Mexican American who speaks spanish fluently but chooses to primarily speak english. I just quit a job at Home Depot because I was taunted and harrassed by other hispanics customers and employees because I choose to speak english. I understand most Hispanics are a tight group but I am an individual with the freedom to make choices for myself and I feel it is a essential to for all people who reside in America to learn proper english and grammar.

I live in Miami and I have never experienced this. Not everyone acts that way. Maybe you approached it wrongly? I worked in Coral Gables and people do approach me Spanish at times, but if I know they are not fluent in the language, then I answer them in English. Its part of giving quality customer service. Also, my parents do not know English as many other Hispanics in Miami don't, but that is because they have worked their whole lives and English wasn't a priority, food was.

I've never been to Miami, but where I live, its like ESL classes are almost empty once you get to the high school level. It used to seem like Hispanic immigrant parents didn't really try to learn much English because they expected their kids to learn it or already know it and translate everything when they needed it, but now, younger parents know at least a little once they get here and try to learn and use English.

@ForgottenFaces001 I was born and raised in Miami. I'm not talking about people that can't speak spanish in general. I'm talking about MY experience. people shouldnt assume that I cant speak English because of my color of skin or the color of my hair.

of course that is not fair to assume based on your racial traits. people assume i can not speak Haitian creole in Haiti because of my racial traits being caucasian. daily i have people speaking english to me when i can speak creole and speaking spanish to me thinking i am cuban. but it is not outlandish for them to assume that i can not speak creole being 90 percent of the white people you meet can not speak it, it is a stereo type but it is often a accurate one.

i do not get angry at people for assuming that i can not understand the language of where i live in Haiti being someone who looks like me is rare. but the big problem you are facing in miami is not the assumptions of white people but the massive migration of people who can not or in same cases refuse and have no want to speak english. i meet many people of the hispanic community in Miami of all racial backgrounds who speak english very well but i meet many who do not.

Have you ever been in a situation where you go to a shop and speak English and the person who is serving you is Hispanic and actually expects you to speak Spanish rathar than English? If so, how do you react / what do you think of the issue?

Yo man I hear what your trying to say, it really pisses me off that speak spanish when we live the States. Another thing that your right about is how that many spanish-speaking people don't even try to speak spanish. That's really bad man. And unfortunately in some jobs if you don't speak spanish you won't get it. keep up the good work.

My cousins in Sweden speak 3 or 4 languages including English. I think it only benefits those who learn to speak other than their primary language. Americans should be learning English, Spanish, and maybe even a few other languages. The bilingual hispanics who work for our family business are a real asset to us which is why they are project managers and supervisors.

I'm mexican and I know both spanish and english laguages and when I see somebody that I'm sure knows spanish by the appearence they looks I speak in spanish to them. Non hispanic people well I don´t waste my time been worried about what they think or feel about us. Me encanta el epañol y de hecho me gustan las lengüas nativas de américa. Las actitudes racistas aún existen pero basta con ignorarlas.

I'm a 4th generation Mexican American who speaks spanish fluently but chooses to primarily speak english. I just quit a job at Home Depot because I was taunted and harrassed by other hispanics customers and employees because I choose to speak english. I understand most Hispanics are a tight group but I am an individual with the freedom to make choices for myself and I feel it is a essential to for all people who reside in America to learn proper english and grammar.

I was at my sister inlaws wedding.. I was in a room of about 20 Brazilians and I don't know Portuguese , they would look @ me and then talk to each other. Then keep talking and laughing and looking at me. Laugh a bit more, so after about 1/2 hour of this I left and everyone thought I was rude for leaving. My sis told them that I don't know Portuguese .. They thought it was odd that I didn't,. Come one people I live in Oregon.. I'm French American.. REALLY?? LOL

I just moved from Miami sis, I'm Hebrew (African American). My first thought was "man .we have destroyed as a people to even have this conversation." I feel Spanish/English were bestowed upon us by our oppressors it's nothing to be proud of either way. Hey, my mom is ecuadorian and my dad is colombian. And i agree with you, people think that just because one is hispanic we have to talk to them in Spanish. Lo que no me parece correcto es que sigas la corriente con eso de "you are in USA so you must speak english" o sea no, no debería ser así, hay muchos países que aceptan diferentes idiomas y no pasa nada al contrario, en vez de encerrarse en su inglés se debería promover que la gente en USA aprendiera un segundo idioma y el español no debería ser tan despreciado es una lástima, sobre todo que hispano descendientes muchas veces prefieren no enseñarlo a sus hijos, una desgracia.

Es muy cierto lo que comentas en tu video, yo mismo soy bilingüe y cuando voy a USA (soy de la frontera) hago los mismo: si me hablan en español contesto en español si me hablan en ingles contesto en ingles y punto. Sin embargo como te ves "muy latina" es obvio que la gente pensará que tu primer idioma es el español, sobre todo los gringos, y eso no debería molestarte.

I live in Miami too and I'm white. I get descrimated against by Latinos all the time espically when I go up to a counter to buy something. They wait for ever to get to me and I know its because there thinking "stupid uppity greengos you'll have to wait". White people get discramtted all the time, but we dont care or sue people, because we dont need anything from you lol

You need to understand that a lot of Hispanics can speak English but they pretend too like they don't speak English. I just don't understand the politics with some of these Hispanic people man, it's like they so insecure or something like they scared. When I used to work customer service for some company years ago, some hispanics will call in and ask for someone who speaks spanish and I appologize to them that there is nobody who speaks Spanish here, then the caller just starts speaking English.

The chances are very, very low, almost not even at all, but it's still possible. The probability of it is very low, it just all has to do with which genetics mix with which.

I live in Miami and I have never experienced this. Not everyone acts that way. Maybe you approached it wrongly? I worked in Coral Gables and people do approach me Spanish at times, but if I know they are not fluent in the language, then I answer them in English. Its part of giving quality customer service. Also, my parents do not know English as many other Hispanics in Miami don't, but that is because they have worked their whole lives and English wasn't a priority, food was.

Latinos and Hispanics were terms to identify europeans. Second. Dont have shame that people assume u only speak spanish. You have a gift of be bilingual. If you go to spain...They are not unified by one culture or language.. The Spanish that is spoken in the Americas is derived from Castilian.. which is the West part of spain.. @johee626 Um, are you mestiza? Then you would be atleast half White. If you are Cuban then chances are you are fully White, like from Spain, maybe Andalucia or Canary Islands where there are naturally tanned Whites with dark hair. Most Cubans in Miami are White Hispanics, cuz all the Indians in Cuba died off. Some are Mulattos and Blacks. If you are Columbian, then chances are you are Mestiza, which I'm sure you know is half White half Native American Indian. Latin IS White=Europe. I'm Spanish.
