There is a reason that Roosevelt's brilliant biography by Edmund Morris is a three volumed creation. Theodore Roosevelt was the American Lion. I have no use for Glen Beck. Whereas T.R. was a uniter Beck is devisive. I am utterly amazed at how ill informed and misguided Beck is on the subject of Theodore Roosevelt. Beck is at best an amateur dabbling in weighty subjects far beyond his ability to comprehend or put in to historical context. Read T.R.s quote "the man in the arena".
Roosevelt was the first president to invite as guests to the White House black men and women, the first to defend black federal appointments in merit rather than race, and when anti-progressives tried to lynch a black postmaster in Mississippi he kept her on and eliminated that town's post office. The anti-progressives said he was a negro-lover (they used another word) and defended wholesale lynching of blacks to put them in their place. To Beck fans: try reading history.
@timetochilli I wish he would just look at history objectively because times change to and fro in America. He said that TR was a racist but a lot of Americans had that viewpoint in his day. TR believed that the Anglo-Saxon race was the premier civilized race, that it would be up to them to bring civilization to native Americans and other "backwards peoples".
@Agent1W By that logic the founding fathers had no virtues due to their views on slavery and the "white race." Franklin wrote an essay called the "lovely white" in which he pushed forward the idea of an all white america. Such ideas are awful yet does that make the actions of them poor? The standards of modern day can be used to view the past, but we cannot instantly denounce historic figures because they do not link up with what we find accepted.
