  • the guillotine uses a angled blade to decapitate humans, this is why swords that are curved are better at severing and decapitating, for experiment, take out 2 piece of bread along with kitchen knife, try to slice the first bread horizontaly(not vertically) on its horizontal side of bread, you see that the bread DID cut thru, but took some effort and the bread is mushed, try on the second piece while slicing bread at a slanted angle and you see that is cut thru cleaner without mushing the bread

  • First of all,the techniques for making katanas started far before medeival times(it came from chinese but japan perfected it),japan was already making weapons out of steel by mixing the right amount of iron(pig iron) with the right amount of carbon to produce a strong durable blade, like what 2:10 - 2:30 mentions, the japanese also follow those steps carefully to prevent sword to break, ever heard of the guillotine? the inventor found out that blades slashing at a slant angle can sever thing better

  • i shall end this debate once and for all

  • I swear one of the conquistadors says "my ballsack" at 8:23... I don't mean to be immature, but that's just what I heard. :)

  • @ChaosDynamics Europeans stopped folding metal the moment they invented steel, the japaneese only had access to pig iron. they HAD to fold the metal because pig iron swords break too easily. even the Saxons made folded swords centuries before the Japaneese did, but it was obsoleete with steel, the europeans had better methods, the europeans had superior swords. the "super katanas" are a result of propaganda.

even if you fold pig iron, the quality is lower than good steel.

  • Japanese swordsmiths were by far the best in the world at the time and their sword forging techniques would have completely shadowed those of the Spanish.

  • @ChaosDynamics ummm no

  • @ImaRageQuitter

Ummm yes actually. Japanese swords were by far the best at this time.

  • @ChaosDynamics wrong, the Japaneese swordsmiths could not compare against the steel weapons of europe, of even middle eastern or german Iron. The Japaneese folded their steel by necessity, as their iron was of an inferior quality. they needed excellent swordsmith skills just to reach the European quality of swords. and nowere near the div ersity.

and even then the japaneese adbility to construct forges were at the level of the romans, more than 1000 years behind european smithing.

  • @evilblades

Are you trying to say that a Katana of that era would be less deadly than a European longsword? I think it's very unlikely. Japanese swords were more flexible, lighter (which aided swift attacks) and stronger (due to the amount of folding) and sharper (when again was aided by the folding which created more layers in the material used). Swords like the Katana were also designed for slashing (so increased change of death/sever immobility on first blow) rather than mere stabbing.

  • @ChaosDynamics Why I am not surprised there would be heated debate on this page about the quality of European vs Asian or more specifically Japanese swords?

  • @supersmash43 ....because you know we live in a racially obsessed culture; in-group out-group bias.

  • One thing that confuses me is that his theory only explains why people outside of Eurasia+North Africa were conquered...Why did Asians and North Africans end up also being colonized by europeans when they had the same geographical advantages?

  • @smile221 because Asia closed its doors to outsiders and did not industrialize until way later. It's the same deal with the middle East and North Africa. Once Japan industrialized it very quickly became a world power.

  • @hystoryan Then surely that points towards cultural or religious reasons are relevant at the very least for Asia and North Africa. Considering that the GGS theory is meant to be all-encompassing, I feel that only explaining new-world and oceanic colonialism is a far way away from a truly global theory of human advancement.

  • @hystoryan Well infact Japan industrialized it very quickly became a world power with the help of Western nations... Japan did not do it by them selfs...

  • One thing that confuses me is that his theory only explains why people outside of Eurasia+North Africa were conquered...Why did Asians and North Africans end up also being colonized by europeans when they had the same geographical advantages?

  • OMG AT LIKE 7:20 HE LOOKS AT THE CAMERA!!!!!!!!!

  • The "Raper" took centuries to perfect???

  • lol the weapon expert is such a geek.

  • is that sword guy being sarcastic? o.O

this is getting too "liberal" for even me to take.

  • mike loades masturbates with the raper.

  • Actually the first use of firepower in war was used by the Muslims when they used cannons to blow up the fortified city of Constantinople in 1453.

  • @98bigbutt

January 28, 1132- Song General Han Shizhong used a Huochong (A handgun) when capturing a city in Fujian, (Fujian- a province on the southeast coast of China)

  • Jesus Christ. I sure hope Anonimouz21 hasn't passed his genes on in the form of a child. I have the utmost pity for any child, girlfriend, parents, or anyone related to him. :(

A breathing example of why I think you should have to pass some kind of test before having children.

  • somebody needs to calm down. The world has never been fair, this coming from a total social outcast. Thier are always more bricks at the bottom of the pyramid, and only one on top.

  • I love fucking Mike Loades

  • WHITE POWER!

  • @Antifaarefags BROWN POWER!

  • everything started in the fertile crescent

  • They keep downplaying the work and ingenuity that went into bringing these technologies about. Like the Europeans just fell into swordsmithing, or that horses just domesticated themselves. These things took unbelievable amounts of work. History shows us that not every people are willing to put in the effort. China could have come up with artillery far superior to that of Europeans, but they didn't. So, to presume that every nation would have been equal is a fallacy.

  • @0HippyHunter0

Yes, but if you take the time frame into account, Europe, The Islamic World and China all had their time of comparative technological advancement within the last millenium and really were mutually influential. (Concerning the length of history the documentary was set in, 1000 years really isn't that long) Whereas completely screened off from these influences the Incas would have never had the chance to benefit form the technologies of Eurasia.

  • So much wealth it fucked da Spanish economy. Inflation. But yea da Spanish were atop of da world

  • Yep good stuff that Toledo steel. Spanish used to be the top dogs what happened?

  • @gunninlinguist the wars against protestant nations fucked the spanish catolic fanatic empire...in the same time spain faced england, prussia, netherland, france, sweden, ottomans, czechs and they have to mantain a monster empire in america and spain in that time have around 10 milions habitant SO IMPOSSIBLE

  • o.o did japanese samurais exist aroundthis time?

  • @BreezyInfernoNinja japanese samurai sucked. they were only good for fighting within japan.

  • The fact of the matter is that Europeans have been at war with one another for their entire history. Only with the recent formation of the European Union has Europe known peace. With the constant fighting came a constant evolution of equipment used in battle. That never ending quest for better, more sophisticated and deadly weaponry set the stage for all the other innovations that eventually lead to the machine age and the industrial revolution. No different than the internet from military use.

  • @ResearchKnowledge123 Yup, no conflict between Africans, Asians or the indigenous peoples of the Americas.

  • if only the Incas had been more aggressive! launching night attacks to kill the horses and cause confusion. and grab those new weapons! farther north, Navajos and Apaches gave the Spanish hell in war! it was a huge rebellion! why didnt Incas form alliances and hit back? making it so the the Spanish feared to even go out for a piss!

  • @acerb45666555 - that still wouldn't have saved them. Like the title says, it was a trifecta that allowed the spanish to win. Guns, Germs, and Steel. Night time raids and psychological warfare couldn't overcome their lack of resistance to European diseases like Smallpox and Measles. It would have just meant a longer conflict, with more exposure to those European diseases, equating to much greater losses overall.

  • The "Aztecs" did never exist. The real name for this asciente people from Tenochtitlan was MEXICAS (Meshicas in spanish pronunciation)

  • @ChaCharlyBoy yeah, aztex

  • It seems like that every time something is posted on youtube that relates to ethnical differences, someone will find the need to throw a hate tantrum and use racism as a weapon. Where is the enlightenment here? A black racist is just as bad as a white one. Racism comes in all colors, when will people understand that? When will people stop using what happened in the past as an excuse for their bad behavior today?

  • I like the steel swords of the spanish..

  • Imperium Europa:

The Book that changed the world.

    Amazon Books

  • All of the comments left by non-Europeans on these videos are very insecure.

  • Why single out non-Europeans' comments? Claims of innate superiority are pretty indicative of insecurity wherever they come from, especially when they're founded on gains that were none of the claimant's doing.

  • @davepx Because its a trend I noticed. A mean spirited begrudgery. To continuously belittle and undermine any European accomplishments.Every other racial group is allowed to have pride in themselves but god forbid a person of European descent does.

  • But again I'm afraid that's not a non-European speciality. I've seen the same from white folk when newly-industrialising countries are mentioned: "we" forged ahead by enterprise & ingenuity, but "they" steal "our" jobs by being poorer. It's a two-way street, and it's not healthy, but I think non-Europeans have been on the receiving end of such belittlement for longer.

  • Ferdinand Magellan got slain by Lapu-lapu, a Filipino warrior. Magellan used cannons, guns, steel swords, the same weapons used by Francisco Pizzaro. But Magellan was killed. You know what killed Magellan ? The superior Filipino Arnis Martial Arts and the courage of Lapu-lapu. Both of these, had the Inca Emperor possessed, he would not have ended in disgrace. Clearly, this Atahualpa is a weak, incapable ruler who managed to defeat and kill his own brother.

  • Nice to see a good observation Everthing is true about the spanish advantages of armour, horse riding, recklessnes, religious motivation, atahualpas stupidity u name it

still, both Incas & Aztecas were weak & naive adversary who subdued to a dwarf

filipinos is good alternative example, as r the small north amer tribes who fought bravely & long against the whole US military & economic overpower

  • @KalleSacanaBlomkvist incas weak and azteks too? lmfao u got that WRONG have u seen the new mma heavyweight champ hes part aztec and not weak at all

  • @Anonimouz21 Cain's decent, but he's gonna get KTFO by JDS, dude. Count on it. (He's also just the UFC champ, not champ of all MMA. Alistair Overreem or Fedor Emelianenko would smoke him.)

  • @InTheRainstorm LMFAO!!! fedor just got punked by a brazilian kid...literally A NOBODY kid and allistair...dont even know who da fuck that is...as for u when u reply me with a vid that PROVES YOUR point i might believe you but right now ur messages dont mean shit to me

  • @Anonimouz21 Fabricio Werdum isn't "A NOBODY", jackass. He's a multiple ADCC champion and a top ten heavyweight. He's considered by most fighters to have the best BJJ at heavyweight in the sport.

  • @InTheRainstorm LMFAO fat nerd BROWN FUCKIN POWER BITCH!

  • @Anonimouz21 Yeah, you seem very intelligent. Props.

  • @InTheRainstorm BROWN FUCKIN POWER BITCH!

  • @Anonimouz21 Pendejo -___- lol

  • @InTheRainstorm LMFAO I JUST found the video of that brazilian kid doggy styling overated fedor, his name is FABRIZIO WERDUM so do me a favor and update ur mma news kid cause u makin a fool out of urself on youtube. ; -D u dont believe me look it up fabrizio werdum beats fedor..

  • @Anonimouz21 If you were unaware of Werdum's win over Fedor - the biggest upset in MMA for years - then it's you who needs to educate yourself about MMA, my friend. I have a lot of respect for Fabrico - he has the best BJJ at heavyweight in the sport. But his win doesn't automatically override a decade of dominance by Fedor in MMA, any more than Cain almost getting knocked out by Cheick Kongo twice undermines him.

  • @InTheRainstorm DOnt matter CAIN IS THE BEST AND IS GONNA BE FOR A LONG TIME BROWN FUCKIN POWER BITCH. now fuck off fat nerd

  • @InTheRainstorm oh yeah i almost forgot BROWN FUCKIN POWER BITCH!

  • @moses123143 if i recall correctly Magallanes was ambushed in a beach...and anyways...they were explorers, not soldiers, as "conquistadores", they were privateers, the real soldiers were fighting through europe and mediterranean sea

  • @moses123143 Magellan was killed because he turned down the offers of rival chieftains for aid; he was overconfident; his men were outnumbered by Lapu Lapu's warriors. BOTH had steel weapons. And those MALAYAN, not Filipino (which is not really a race when you think about it) fighters knew the lay of their own land.

  • @RavnDream Malayans were the ancestors of the present Filipinos. They were smart and brave too. Not like Atahualpa or Magellan who are both shortsighted. True, Lapu-lapu got steel weapons but besides that He is skilled in the deadly Filipino Martial Arts. A system of stick fighting which beats steel swords and guns and slow cannons. But most importantly the brains of Lapu-lapu. This Atahualpa was just plain stupid. Magellan, too clueless.

  • @moses123143 I have experience in arnis. It's not that impressive. And with all due respect I highly doubt narrow pieces of sticks would put up any fight with steel-clad mercenaries with guns. No, Lapu Lapu and his men used scimitars (dunno if it's called a kris or something else...). & they pro'lly ambushed them when they came to shore.

  • @RavnDream I do admire your skill in arnis if indeed you are experienced. But Lapu-lapu didnt have simply an experience he was a master of Arnis as a combat deadly skill. By the way, arnis today is simply a fitness sport. That's the arnis you learned and that's cool just like a ping-pong match. But that's not the arnis during Lapu-lapu's time. Magellan probably thought just before his head came off he wouldnt have died of stupidity if he did not follow atahualpa's ignorance.

  • @moses123143 However, I do agree Atahualpa was stupid, but then so were most monarchs who fancied themselves as gods. Magellan wasn't clueless; more like arrogant, too sure of himself. If he'd done like that guy who conquered the Aztec (gathered native allies, etc) I'm pretty sure he would have had Lapu Lapu's head on a platter.

  • @RavnDream You probably mean that guy Cortez. He was the real smart conquistador. He conquered the Aztecs because he used his extra-ordinary brains, he wasnt clueless like Magellan. Had he been as shortsighted as Magellan he would be roasted by the Aztecs rightaway. His steel weapons would have ended up as souvenir. No this Cortez was smart. The guy who conquered the Philippines was no less smarter, probably smarter than Cortez. Poor Magellan, he's no better than Atahualpa

  • my sword is for poking through meat curtains!

  • What about the Japs?

Their Samurai swords are among the best.

And again the europe got their Sword making skills from the Moors.

    Look up Damascus Steel.

  • the japs have the strongest swords in the world and it still is the strongest... their form of swordsmanship is probably superior to european forms as well this is probably why the japs were never overrun by europeans and why they played such a huge part in wwII... i wish they did stuff on asia because it leaves us in a big hole of why the europeans didn't press east into asia

  • @trousien The Japs were overrun, by Americans in the 1800s.

And of course the eureopeans never took them over; they were way too far away.

  • a sword made for stabbing AND slashing? Amazing!

  • the story's missed out the part about people in n. africa, europe and asia used to have similar level of technologies and similar living standards, and how and why things changed later. life was hard and everyone was poor for a long long time, i mean thousands of years!

  • That's a hard one, let me try. It's all about the banking system. Europe had been broken up into many fiefdoms and city states all fighting with each other, compared to Asia which was more cohesive. The banking system (borrowing) allowed a small ruler to borrow and then take over the neighboring land. Borrowing was similarly used by explorers. That led to fraction-reserve banking, which in turn led to an obsession with growth and technological development, which led to rapid advancement.

  • @mlsi i disagree, they already covered that

  • @mlsi The story is about the differentiation. I thought what you mean is mentioned in part 1 (maybe just once though). It really doesn't matter that much in context of this story i.m.o.

  • @mlsi That area is covered in part one, where he illustrates that the pure equality was changed (using his theory) by farming. He argues that the better food could've been acquired the faster your growth at the beginning which then lead to winning the technology race for things such as swords and guns.

  • Mike Loades! Give the man a weapon, and he'll share the shit out of you while he lectures.

Thanks to the Muslims, the Spanish had access to the Turkish and Indian swordmakers and gave them the edge over the slower bronze maces and wooden macana that the Inca used

  • The Spanish had their own metallurgical tradition that went back to pre roman times. After all the Gladius was a Spanish weapon copied by the Romans.

  • I knew a white guy once

  • I knew him also

  • Judging by the way you write and express yourself, you don't give a very good impression of a "most evolved of all humans." In fact, I would argue that you are quite base and savage; not able to contain your emotions like an animal.

A side note, the Americas never developed steel weapons, nor the wheel. Yet by the time the Spanish arrived in Inca, all of Eurasia has developed these technologies. There just wasn't the Silk Road equivalent in the New world for the diffusion of ideas.

  • Thanks, you just made me believe in the existence of subhumans. You clearly are one. That's an ideological victory of sorts I suppose.

I do hope you don't procreate.

  • AAAUMA YEEEEEMA...

  • does any1 know why the spanish had advanced to steel swords while incas were still making tools and weapons from bronze?

  • The Incas were cut off by the irregular terrain and their crops and animals weren't as efficient as those in Europe. Furthermore, the Spanish had contact with advanced societies like the Ottomans and the Chinese, while the Inca were cut off by the mountains, forests, and while they traded metalworking and corn with the Tarascans in Mexico, they didn't have the geographical and ecological background that the Spanish did

  • ya, but this still doesnt explain why areas that had the right animals and geography did not become as strong as europe (asia, middle east) .. like episode one starts off by saying those in modern iran and surrounding areas developped better farming but this also moved east . it fails to detail how europe become the dominant area!

  • Racism Be Gone, do not mistake nationalism with racism and visa versa. and do not rewrite history like a king who kills for nothing.

  • The rapier's got nothing on the Hitori Hanzo sword. =p

  • Japan had better swords with their Samurai. Competition, ingenuity, and location all played a role.

  • they had TOTALLY OWNAGE SWORDS the japs, way better than the straight sword.

  • they haved better swords but they dont knew to fight well witht hem and they dont conquered anything

  • nah... they were good in the swords. damn good. Their technique was way better than European styles. But they didn't have anything to conquer. The neighbour China is just too scary for them to approach at that time. And they didn't have a strong sea fleet (not to mention China's ships were actually superior to Europeans at one time, so the japs didn't have a chance)

But who said they didn't conquer anything, they did WWII XD only to be defeated by a US's "special finishing attack" move XD

  • yes all you say its true , but some (katanas) are very heavy licke the past and the spanish sword that appears is more flexible its more easy to use but it can break easylly . the perfect sword dont exists , only in final fantasy XD

  • I suppose it depends on your style. If you are like the fencing type, then katana sux. If you like standing at one place, legs open, and make big swings with your sword, then the rapier is just not strong enough. It's all about style =P

  • What sword you use is the product of the style, method of engagement, and the location of the fight. What style you use is based upon military doctrine, unit tactics, and training.

Swords were often avoided when fighting in formation, with the primary weapons being those of spear and bow category, or pikes and crossbows. Swords were used for personal defense if your spear shattered, much in the same way that a modern pistol is used when your rifle jams, breaks, or you run low on ammunition.

  • DAMN IT!!! i wish youtube would put the thumbs up symbol to the left instead of the right. i keep accidently marking ppl thumbs down when i actually liked their comment.....RAWR!!!!

  • but then you would accidentally press thumbs up when you dislike a comment

    lol

  • the7thwreck:

Not nessesarily, although all human beings have commited atrocities, White's are responsible for nearly 90% of the "original" population of natives. It just proves that White's were at the right place in the right time, according to notion of White Supremacy and not the mere fact that they're White. ; )

  • So the white man isnt evil after all, he just happened to be in the right place at the right time.

  • Wow someone else who actually understands the hypotheses! I do think there are other factors Diamond sadly leaves out. Mainly religion and Government. I mean the fact that the Incas lived under a despotism and thought their ruler was a god, the über Catholicism of the conquistadors etc. Great book though, regardless!

  • @CuntThunder yeah....there is no shame in admitting that europeans had better cards dealt and they were smart enough to actually use them, china had the right cards also but because of internal politics(dont quote me but i remember hearing their emperor closed the borders and ports or something like that in the 1400s) they failed to use all their cards to their full potential. I do think Jared Diamond is right in that GEOGRAPHY was the biggest deciding factor on who had the advantage.

  • @ArmanCortez1 I think it's because China had no reason to explore or expand because they had so many recources to trade with, while the Europeans were forced to explore to look for them. I think technology in China also stagnated because they had no competition and the Europeans were constantly competing with each other.

  • @delxart That is VERY true in that sens! Europeans were constantly competing with each other and out siders as well. There was an arms race in Europe sence the fall of Rome...

  • @CuntThunder Why not be anti human =)? That way you can't discriminate.

  • no greed was still a factor in their conquest and what they engineered. They also had an air of superiority.

  • this is some good directing and camera work

  • Ooloosoon shut up you racist arsehole because no one here wants to know about the bullshit intellectual racism you go on about!

  • It's funny how some people can say that there are differences in IQ between people of different races, when it is clear that people of all colours have had successful civilizations. Faulty ideals mixed with faulty science is a new breed of ignorance.

  • i agree. i'm a psych student and we've learnt that brain size depends on your body size. if u have a large body, u have a bigger brain. if u havea small body, u get a smaller brain. ust how men have slightly bigger brains then women. simple.

and IQ tests were developed in the west. which is why westerners score "better" on Iq tessts compared to others. an intellegence test invented in China for example, would be catered for the chinese, thus if weaterners took it, we'de probably not do well.

  • i agree. i'm a psych student and we've learnt that brain size depends on your body size. if u have a large body, u have a bigger brain. if u havea small body, u get a smaller brain. ust how men have slightly bigger brains then women. simple.

  • so If you have a big brain you are more intelligent then a short man??? is that what you are telling?? then chinese must be the most dumb ppl in da world????

  • i forgot to add that brain sizw has nothing to do with how smart a person is. come on! wat diff does it make?! we only use 1% of brains now! my point is that arguing abt who's superior to who is really dumb. we're all the same.

  • To paiya12: so if someone had a brain the size of a grape they would be just as smart?

  • so what were the indians and chinese doing at around this time? theyve been completely ingnored in this presentation...

  • So have effective archery weapons (e.g Mongol bows), They don't say a shit about them either!

  • lol Glad someone else noticed!

  • You dang racists. White populations were not smarter, that is the point of this movie. Do you not think the arid deserts of Africa would not do the same as European winters? Humans are fundamentally the same, it has in fact been proven that humans all over the world only differ by 0.1% that accounts for personality hair colour etcetera. I ask you o please discontinue these hateful and ethnocentric propaganda!

  • LOL. Black people in the form of Egyptians, Iraqis, and Indians have invented: number-system, alphabet, piston-engine, bronze, steel, optics (magnifying glass), automatic-control (Banu Musa), automatic clock (Al-Jazari), petrol, kerosene lamps, concept of zero, etc,.

  • @TheSage555 You could argue that the environment effects genetics. That is why we have different races.

  • @TheSage555 Ignore the ignorant.

  • Heck even the Wall Street Jounral now ADMITS the TRUTH

{"Racial Differences in IQ Genes found

    The Wall Street Journal

    By ANTONIO REGALADO

    2006

Bruce Lahn professor of human genetics at the Unv. Chicago stood before a packed lecture hall and reported the results of a new DNA analysis He had found signs of recent evolution in the brains of some people, but not of others

He flashed maps showing changes (in brain size/ IQ ) had taken hold in Europe, Asia but weren't common in Africa

  • Yes DragoonBomb 911 ur right. But you see many people ignore the fact that bows were just as efective as Arquebuses; especially in this documentary. They don't say a shit about the efectiveness of archery weapons!

  • Rapiers rule!

  • Only if the mongoles where here, they could kill them with there bows, and demoralise the Incas with there army of horsmen.

  • at 7:20 i looks like he is looking to the camera. LOL

  • thats not queit true though bout all the swordsmiths were equal, japan had less resources 2 make swords, so if u wanted a sword, it was a really excellent sword or none at all

  • If the Inca thought the Spanish were no threat then why not get rid of them immediately if they thought it would be so easy?

  • the damascus steel sword (made in Turkey) was much stronger, they could cut through european armour. so there, europeans werent the best at sword-making.

  • No sword, no matter what origin, was able to cut through steel armor.

To overcome an armoured opponent you are relying on axes,

maces or if both opponents are amoured and using swords they relyed on grappling skills to bring the other guy to the ground and finishing him with a dagger.

ps. Swordsmiths in the Europe, Japan and Turkey were equal in there craft.

  • yeah swords cant cut through steel plate armor. the use of axes, halberds, war hammers, etc...

other forms of european armor like mail possibly. but once people started wearing forms of partial plate and full plate armor. the sword is no longer as effective. europeans arent the only ggroups of people to wear sucha armor. Its just taht in the warmer climates on anatolia, the levant... using such armor would be less widespread.

  • And you forget to mention China and Korea, which is where the art of making samurai swords actually came from. And don't forget the middle east, renowned for their Damascus steel

  • very nice

  • hi borat.
