@blastman1 : the contemporary guitarists who are playing like this are few and far between but you might want to check out what Luther Dickinson of N. Miss. AllStars is doing. He seems to be coming out of this sound and mention Fred in interviews as an early influence. Another one (surprisingly) is Bonnie Raitt on her very first album, which is now about thirty years old.
@booksteve I've seen Luther Dickinson and the NMISS All Stars at Jazzfest. They do emulate Fred and RL Burnside. Bonnie's early Blues is excellent; she was influenced by Sippy Wallace on vocals, and I would almost swear that Lowell George taught her a lot of slide guitar.
Between the complex plucking and the sliding, he's not only the melody, but his own friggin' rhythm section. No drums or bass needed folks, just ol' Fred. It's awesome.
This is a extremely well filmed video of an amazingly talented musican. What is this film from? I'd love to get the whole piece. McDowell's style is very innovative, and slide players since have studied him, but the only musican I can remotely compare him to is Sonny Landreth
@onlyjoetee SARCASM ON/// No it's not! He should only play rhythm or lead. Pick one! As a bass player, if he would start doing this I would shoot him!! He should just have a lead guitarist do it for him so he can stay in the pocket! Wannabe lead guitarist! Songwriters should only play rhythm! How am I supposed to hold a groove with this? Its like if you go to a restaurant and your waiter comes over and starts juggling, singing and tap dancing. He may be good at it, but that's not his job. \\\
@chrisgreatorex1 Yeah you should read some of onlyjoetee's comments about bassists then you would understand my sarcasm. He's a fucking closed minded idiot.
Excellent piece of work!! Thank you very much for Sharing!!!!!
What a way of meeting people and get to see their talent. At first was reluctant being on youtube, but getting to do this has brought me into the houses of some very special people. You are one of them. Life; isn't it wonderful!!! Keep up the good work. Hope You Are Having A Splendid Day!!!!
Just found a new release of never before heard Fred McDowell recordings from 1967—“Come and Found You Gone,” from Devil Down Records---there are some free samples too (devildownrecords. com)
this stuff's like good gospel. just try to stay still! that rhythm stays with you all day. AMEN! screw the "attic monkeys" and "hootie and the goldfish" ! THIS, my dear, is what music's SUPPOSED to sound like!

hank you for your video
I agree with you that it is a permormance
I agree with Wonka275, Mississippi and his guitar are sufficient unto themselves.
I agree with MyWoodstock of November 13, 2011 which speaks of his fingers have a mind.
MISSISSIPPI love because well as being a legendary slide guitarist, his musical imprint has kept some of his African roots.
Mississippi is whose most titles are part of my favorites.
