Thanks for posting this to YouTube. I’ve haven’t seen this performance since it was on live television in 2002. I remember being blown away by Kelly on this night - from her very appropriate 1940's look (you can imagine her on a USO tour in WW2), to her actual singing performance, to her completely genuine humility when getting praise from the judges. (I didn’t see that in a contestant again until Melinda Doolittle in Season 6.) I said, “She’s going to win, and there's nobody more deserving."

she's american idol's biggest star. everyone knows she came out from ai, but unlike most other winners, she's still out there and getting better and better. sure, there's carrie underwood and she's great, but kelly was the first and i honestly don't think others could surpass her. others from idol, that is. and she's so down to earth. didn't let the fame get to her head. thats important to.
As great as this is, it's interesting to think that if we heard this now on Idol, the judges would say something about it not being "relevant" or "current" or "not showing us the kind of artist you want to be." One example is Crystal Bowersox's recent performance of Summer Wind, which they dismissed as stylistically off, not seeming to realize that the contestants are somewhat pigeonholed by the theme in any given week, and sometimes a great vocal is all you can really ask for.
Kelly is the best America Idol so far and I doubt anyone could surpass her. Kelly is by far one of the best female vocalists of the decade, if not the best.

Kelly is Absolutely the greatest, I actually think she has a better voice than Carrie Underwood, tho both are really really special.... Idol hasn't found another singer that can compare to these two,, and Idol is sinking fast, they really need another talent like Kelly Clarkson to come along and boost the sagging show..

@arkhaili I kind of agree.No one gets credit anymore when they perform well, cause the judges say "you didn't do anything 'different' with it". You don't ALWAYS have to change it up!!!!

Wow! What a fun performance!!!! I missed the first season, but I can see why the show caught on so quick!!! This was just fun, the judges seem like they aren't just "going through the motions" yet, and it feels more spontaneous, this is what the show should still be about! Amazing!!!! :D:D:D

ha i love all her facial expressions here especially the one from 2:10-2:12. and the way she moves ther shoulders at 1:58 at the exact same time the music went CLICK was so cute. oh and how she moves her head from 1:36-1:38 was cool!..i tried doin it, but it just doesnt come out like hers

Must have missed this performance live, but when I found this video, I decided that Kelly Clarkson is the best Idol performer yet. Love this sound, love this era, love Kelly. Hate the post-modernistic camera work! Really want to see Kelly sing all of this song... just her, nothing else.

she's american idol's biggest star. everyone knows she came out from ai, but unlike most other winners, she's still out there and getting better and better. sure, there's carrie underwood and she's great, but kelly was the first and i honestly don't think others could surpass her. others from idol, that is. and she's so down to earth. didn't let the fame get to her head. thats important to.

As great as this is, it's interesting to think that if we heard this now on Idol, the judges would say something about it not being "relevant" or "current" or "not showing us the kind of artist you want to be." One example is Crystal Bowersox's recent performance of Summer Wind, which they dismissed as stylistically off, not seeming to realize that the contestants are somewhat pigeonholed by the theme in any given week, and sometimes a great vocal is all you can really ask for.

Kelly is the best America Idol so far and I doubt anyone could surpass her. Kelly is by far one of the best female vocalists of the decade, if not the best.

oh wait, i wasn't trying to take a knock at kelly. i think that she's an amazing talent. i was just talking about paula and her coocky ways lol :) but i think kelly is a star in every way possible. i mean the girl practicly made american idol what it is today because of her success after winning the show. i'm so glad that kelly clarkson decided to audition cause lord knows if she didn't, where would idol be today?

This was the moment that Kelly became a star, and the first AI performance that really got people to take the show seriously. To this day, it's never been surpassed. The current contestants only wish they could have a performance even half as good as this.
