  • Thumbs up if you know where this is from: "Beat up Martin...............Eat up Martha."

  • @TheGreenSeaDotNet The Simpsons, lampooning the handwriting recognition software

  • It's available on iPad: Notes Plus FTW

  • guys... this came out in 1987. for then, it was lightyears ahead of its time!

  • IS STEVE BALLMER IN MINUTE 2:10?

  • why SJ hated this device?! he eliminate as soon as getting back to Apple.

  • The Newtons were not big sellers They were developed by marketing executives who didn't rely on software designers enough to make them cutting edge. While Newton was just sort of existing, companies like Palm were making much better devices in terms of usability. Jobs recognized this, and the bath Apple took on the project, and immediately started planning for better things, which eventually became iOS for the iPod and iPad. However, the Newton line was the first to be considered PDAs.

  • This thing is fuckin usefull... we could use it today...

  • mm.. i understand its 2011... but i kinda want a Newton. lol

  • @Bronxchic1210 lol i felt the same when watching the video :P

  • fun fact: the newton had the word "iPhone" in its auto-correction list, conspiracy much?

  • it came with a video?!

  • 0:08 haha then the guy gets hit by a car texting while walking

  • I need one of these! My iPad is alright I guess, but it can't do what newton does!

  • Newton is so cool, I bought one and I'm going to write the rest of this comment on it! Horse! Fisheggs samba wood glue macaroni? Paper shovel dog truffle bowtie. LOG!

  • omg this thing is so cool i want one!

  • this is better than the damn iphone!

  • Wow! Men's business shirts sure were puffy in the '90s :-P

  • This Newton was very ahead of it's time. Slick device.

  • CI5LOGIN

  • BOCUS JOHNSON

RINGS GRADUATION YOU CANT HACK IT

  • For some reason, I get the feeling they were marketing to upper-class rich business people.

  • this is pretty amazing, i never knew that it had handwriting conversion that early!

  • I would prefer Newton over iPad.

  • wow they knew the writing was a bit messed up on this thing.

  • Guys, the iPad wasn't a replacement for the NEWTON. The iPad was designed to be a cross between a smartphone and a laptop. The newton was a "MessagePad" for business and notes. Maybe apple will rlease anther thing like the Newton cause I liked NEWTON.

  • those old people are dead now

  • @kojmuffin lol ur awesome!

  • Funny, this thing can basically do more usefull things than the ipad.

    That is mostly useless.

  • I love how they're instructing you how to make up for how crappy the handwriting recognition

  • Alot of idea like this in the iphone

  • wow technology was so advanced :D

  • if Apple could do this on the Newton 18 years ago, how come the iPad is so dumbed down?

  • @sonamara997 iPad is so dumbed down?.......have you ever used an iPad ? you must be very immature .

  • this thing seems so advance.

  • i want this

  • i want this

  • Makes you wonder why the ipad/phone doesn't have an optional handwriting recognition built in.

  • awww.... beaming, I wanted it to be useful so bad....

  • The iPad has NOT got an Infa-red port. It is, therefore, completely useless when I'm trying to 'beam' a coffee date in board meetings.

  • the newton was too advanced for the 90s

  • BEAMING

"meet me out back at 4:00pm for some lovin!"

  • 2:24 - "Beaming" WHY DONT YOU JUST OPEN YOUR MOUTH AND TALK!?!?!?

  • @tangofizz77 if you're in a business meeting you're not gonna start talking to your coworker while your boss is talking

  • hey dolph, take a memo on your newton. "beat up martin"

    "Eat up Martha"

    BAH

  • 1:42 what a douchebag

  • you can draw circles and squares and triangles and shit

  • Impressive, yes, but you weren't able to play Angry Birds on this thing.

  • @rico7738 lol everything is so game centered these days

  • Grrr! It's like they went backwards with the iPhone! :( On the iPhone I couldn't find any To do apps. I can't type in notes and it automatically transfers things into the calender! I can't fax, well I don't think I'd wanna, but it would be a nice thing! I can't make a letter. It would be so nice to have something like that Newton on my iPhone 4. :)

  • This is the early versions of Swipe

  • I had a newton, it was a great toy at the time, but almost useless. It's taken 15 or so years for the iphone and ipad to become what the newton promised to be.

  • Call me sad, but I actually found this more impressive than the iPad.

  • @discountbacon I did to this is so amazing and advanced even for or time the only difference would be now it would have a color screen!

  • This IS the iPad, just 13 years older. The iPad just has more features, and is more kid-friendly. iPad CAN e-mail, print, write notes, and has a calender. BUT the iPAD can ALSO play games, and can get new apps. iPAD IS NEWTON, NEWTON IS iPAD.

  • @VideoGamingDog 17 years older :)

  • i love how they say "the possibilities are just endless"...now...theres iPAD!

  • i wonder how much this thing acctuly cost then...

  • cool, you can actually add words on the newton, +1 newton -1 iPhone

  • For get the ipad, this is actually practical.

  • @Morahman7vnNo2 I completely agree with you... this Newton is productivity...

  • LOL rolodex

  • Wow, for it's time that must have been amazing!

  • i want one now!

  • Take a look at the Microsoft's "Courier" (Search it in youtube)

  • @IvIv55 It's a shame it was cancelled it looked pretty good.

  • i want one!

  • lol @ 3:47 - was everyone into bricklaying in the 90s?

  • That should make this thing with a color screen! They have creative names, Apple, and Newton :D

  • i want a mothafuckin newton

  • Would 'beaming' a message be equivalent to the modern day SMS?

  • I think this does my then my iPhone 4! o_0

  • Wow, the Newton was so ahead of its time.

  • WOW the newton can print but the iPad can't yet?!

  • @julio71785 Sigh... printing is old tech, Email to whoever you need to get it too is the way forward

  • I'm watching this video on my MessagePad 130.

Obviously, I am just kidding, but I AM using it along with the video. Just like you were supposed to.

  • Whoa this this was so ahead of its time!

  • where can I buy one?

  • Oh great! The Newton is like a high-tech student that you have to spend most of your time teaching to do things right! YAY! I've always wanted to teach!

  • Newton's great in case you wanna tell that hot woman across the table to join you in that nearby motel later!

  • Funny thing is the newton can do things the iPad cant lol

  • What Did It Come On i.e VHS,DVD ,CD ROM

  • lol i want one so bad

  • I like the function of printing and faxing on Newton. We still need office doc. by fax and hard copy nowadays. Why iPad can't?

  • Actually pretty cool. Better than ipad

  • Things like this are worthless without a fast internet browser.

  • I cannot believe someone actually is trying to scam people here with the old "Apple is giving away a bunch of iPhones" scam but then posts a URL that is not even an Apple URL. How big of suckers do they think people are. That message below should be removed.

  • I want one!!!

  • I want something like that even now in 2010

  • quite amazing. The 13 year old newton can do stuff that the iPad cant. Like printing!

The writing recognition feature is also amazing...

I also like how easy it seems to be to send emails.

Quite funny that the concepts look the same in the end - a big touch screen!

  • thats really good!

  • I want a newton more than the iPad :P

  • @joseisamacgeek ipad has a internet browser,games,movies and youtube

    How is a newton better?

  • its an ipad

  • define "endless"

  • Beat up Martin.

    Eat up Martha.

  • Limitless...wellother than all the stuff is can't do, which I can't list here due to a character count of 500. The worst on this list was to be affordable, because its apple. Newton was an epic fail due to Macs wonderful market plan of charging up the @ss.

  • "The possibilities are limitless". They say that every time

  • What cracks me up is there is a guy working on his newton when his family is paddleboating, and another with his kids on the playground. Newton: work more, spend less time with your family.

  • . . . or I could use a piece of paper and a pen.

  • When Newton failed they began to hate the stylus... *gg*

  • @iFuff I AGREE COMPLETELY!! If you people had just bought a Newton, I wouldn't have had only my fingers to use on my iphone! Apple is probably seeking revenge against the people who did not buy a Newton in the 90's by forcing them to finger write now.

  • @webk1nzmen get a stylus

  • @MecaWalrus well yea the only problem is the type of touch screens on current apple touchscreen products only work when they get the electrical signals from human skin, i.e. your fingers. A stylus wouldn't work, and believe me, I tried that fruitless journey long ago involving several old DS's and even a 1996 newton got on ebay..

  • @webk1nzmen some realy nice ones that works is the pogo and radtech styloid

  • @webk1nzmen i wasn't quite in the age for using a newton. steve jobs is not out for revenge. bacl then people just had their first computers. the were more comfortable to write a letter manually then typing it. nowadays everyone is faster in touchtyping than writing sth the old way.

  • If you compare the 1993 Apple Newton and the 2010 Apple iPad, the Newton was more advanced for its time.

  • Wow, I never thought of that, thats a really good point!

  • @ori599gtb you absolutely right ... and to be honest. not that I a bit embarrassing. but I would prefer to buy such a newton as an IPAD. I can buy the newton yet? not likely. but I think the cool ^ ^ (excuse my bad english. I am a German student. and unfortunately I can not so good English.)

  • @ori599gtb

Yeah but the ipad is PRETTY and the newton is UGLY. That's why Apples stock has been so high lately. They figured out that the American consumer doesn't want "high technology" they want FLASH, PIZZAZ, GLITZ and GLAM. When a company learns this lesson, we call it "the Chrysler lesson".

  • @ruinyourdaywithpiss Dude back then performance meant something. It meant more than looks and thats why technology advanced so much in the 80's and the 90's. Now, since computers are mainstream, looks are more important than performance and that is going to be the downfall of technology if it continues for mainstream whores.

  • @ori599gtb agreed. both brilliant devices though. also funny how apple is re-inventing the what/who/where is newton with their new ipad ad "what is ipad?"

  • @ori599gtb Are you seriously on something?!

that Newton was CRAP compared to the iPad. Enjoy carrying that 10lb junk.

  • @Jaggabone The Newton was ahead of it's time, but yea it did have some major flaws.

  • @ori599gtb except the battery

  • @ori599gtb Newton looks cooler to me, even today! Man, have you seen the way you can handwrite with it? :O!!

  • You gotta remember, this was before there WAS wireless. You transferred data by "beaming" via infrared ports, which all Mac laptops had at that time. It was sort of a wireless workaround. Newton was really ahead of its time. It will be interesting to see if Apple's new tablet has handwriting recognition along with keyboard input.

  • why would you write with your fingers?

  • Its true apple did the right product at the wrong time

  • Wow. 1997. Look how far we've come.

This thing really was ahead of its time. The only thing keeping it grounded in the 90s is the humongous size and monocrom screen. Otherwise I would have thought this was a 2006 or later device.

Man. The Apple tablet had better step up to compare with the Newton. I wonder if they can still shoot for being at least 8 years ahead of its time. My expectations for the new tablet just went up.

You know . . . if the new tablet even exists. ;D

  • ITS SO BIG!!! I LUV IT!!!

  • this was the 4 years ago palm, and the 13 years ago apple

  • I like to stuff my down my trousers.

  • amazing since this thing is 13 years old

  • @jckskeltonHACK The only thing that was amazing was the enormous PRICE and the PUFF animation that is still used on OS X desktop today.

  • @jckskeltonHACK oh its one year younger then me

  • @jckskeltonHACK

    Um, isn't 2010-1993 17 years?

But apparently 30 people disagree with me

  • i like the whole scrubbing think :)

    fantastic tech for the time!

  • this was the funniest tech flop from apple! that is why up until about 8 years ago pocket pc and the palm pilot were king!

  • i disagree, if the price back then was less then this would have been a greaat product, i hope apple makes a product lik this right now

  • they are, iSlate, late january

  • That is just an unofficial rumour.

  • This is actually fantastic for it's time!! I can't believe it! I never seen a device like this from like the 70's or 80's!

  • @d1995a3 the came out in 1992

  • I think apple might have a stylus for the apple tablet since the iPhone didnt have handwriting recognition.

  • maybe they'll have a virtual keyboard like they had on the iPhone.

  • @d1995a3 lmao maybe... (face palm on my idiocy in that old comment)

  • Meh, the Newton was ahead of its time... nobody wanted one, even though it was revolutionary, and in some aspects we're just now catching up to it.

But it was Sculley's baby, not Steve's, and when he came back he ditched it.

I love the Newton, I have a 120, 2000, two 2100's and an eMate. Get one of these off eBay now before they become too rare!

  • i dont know why this failed, this sounds great for its time!

  • They said it had many bugs with it. That's why Apple stopped the production.

  • WHY THE FUCK DID YOU NOT BUY THIS ? We'd be in FUCKING 2050 right now !

  • they said it had many bugs with it. That's why Apple stopped the production.

  • I have the sama thing and I still like it

  • Well hopefully Apple's new upcoming tablet will act like part of a Newton as well as iPhone OS support. They are current;y figuring out the design of the tablet, and we are, too!

  • I had one. It was expensive, like US$ 500,00 on that time. To be honest it was somenthing not very useful.

  • woooow

  • Wow, this is crazy. Way ahead of it's time. Apple should make a new Newton.

  • It's actually rather likely that we will see something similar from Apple soon.

There have been rumours about a small tablet (10" screen) for some time now and apple recently applied for a patent on some pen-based touchpad input/handwriting recognition stuff.

  • They did, it's called the iPhone.

  • The newton was a flop so steve jobs ditched it when he became CEO

  • @Anavengertg actually many sources and books suggest that coz newton is the product of the previous ceos who fired him and when he return to apple newton was begining to make money.....so and he wasnt ceo then .....get ur facts ok

  • No those books aren't facts. They're conjecture.

  • Apple is [trying] to make a tablet for their market.

And hopefully, it should have a Pen mode and/or a Touch mode or something like that... We'll see next year...

  • Let's just hope it can actually use a stylus this time.

  • Technobuffalo sent me here :D

  • Apple should implement english handwriting recognition for iphone!! they only made it for chinese....

  • when he writes "fox", it looks like he's writing "fart" xD

  • it doesn't make any sense. she drew a circle it turned in to a circle, then drew another circle. and this time turned into a square !!!!!.

  • She drew a circle around the object to select it, after first holding the pen down momentarily, which selected the object. She then dragged and dropped it.

  • That Wasnt a Cricle.... it was SELECT MODE dumbass... you know it for the thick painting....

If you use select marker around the circle it shows afterwards the Selection borders, wich has a square format.

  • Apple has just REHIRED the original Newton developer today! iPad on it way? Newton was DEFINITELY ahead of its time.

  • This was SO ahead of its time. It even does stuff that todays PDAs cant

  • To this day, Newton is my choice of handheld device.

  • this thing is badass apple should bring it back like a big iphone but more on the macbook side

  • LOL I wish there's an iPhone app for that! xD

  • Eat up martha

  • Newton mp2k ftw! Best handwriting recognition ever. I even still have the ethernet card for it. And the keyboard. Not sure what else. I ran by and grabbed a bunch of marked-down stuff from the Newton store before it shut down. I forget what it was called. Not an apple thing. They just sold Newtons and accessories. Here in LA.

  • the handwriting recognition was actually pretty cool, I mean the iphone won't do that because it doesn't carry an stylus.

  • This looks like the device that Gretchin has in the show "Recess" Haha

  • Is there an episode for that?

    Thanks (=

  • we are living in the future baby!

  • I have a newton 110,it works awesome .Very cool retro stuff

  • I have an Original MessagePad and this video helped me out with somethings on the device that I would never know about

  • This never really took off... why? This project was canceled because this industry stood to make more money by actually prolonging it's arrival and developing other aspects of tech.

We, as consumers, have been paying for very little progression for years and will continue to do so in a market that is controlled by it's developers.

    Smart business move.
