The only thing David had was some descent runs in his voice but he had a terrible falsetto, the only reason David had as much hype as he did was because of promotion. Had Otis never gave him a chance he wouldn't have it as easy. Even today that's how it is their are people who can sing but very few of them are given the shot to be stars and instead it's given to those that have lesser talent & have connections or something..

The temptations would've never had trouble with a voice like that. The only one in the group that could've beaten Al was Eddie but that's it. 'David knew of the growing schism with Al and had "cunningly calculated" his move to get into the Temptations. When they played a gig at Chappy's Lounge...in Oct, 63' Ruffin lay in wait as they hit their encore number "Shout" which set off a wild finish. It got wilder when Ruffin leaped on stage, grabbed the mic and rattled the walls, with scorching yowls, 360 moves, splits, cartwheels and mic tossing. O says "like a man possessed."

I'm reading a new Tempts booked called "The Troubled Lives and Enduring Soul of the Temptations: Ain't To Proud To Beg." It describes the scene this way: David had leaped onstage while they sang Shout and was "allegedly" outdoing Al. It was Al and not Paul who wanted to go back out for a 4th encore. Al was doing everything to "keep pace with David." Paul said no. He was exhausted. Al flipped and hit Paul with the bottle; but he remained a Temptation; for awhile 'cause Paul nixed firing him.
